Mess hall worker Betsy Lagakis, who will have served 1,100 recruits at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island before heading to her own Thanksgiving dinner, describes the holiday feast in store for young Marines in the making.

Pie! I remember a recruit in my Basic Training Platoon took two pieces of pie at chow. The Drill Sergeant saw him do it. Then the Drill Sergeant took all of our pieces of pie and put it on the offenders tray. He made him eat it all....probably a pie and half's worth of pieces, maybe more. We finished chow and formed up outside the mess hall and waited for the Drill and the recruit to come out. Took about 15 minutes or so. The recruit was holding his stomach and was in rough shape. Then the Sarge made him run around our formation as we marched back. The pie didn't stay down very long after that.

Navy Boot Camp back in the 80's, you could take what you want, but eat what you take was the motto.

many memories from the chow hall 3rd battalion platoon 3006 Graduated Dec 22, 1972, on Mess duty, I cooked eggs and pancakes, the only good thing I got as much food as I could eat.

I had the crucible at least 3 weeks after thanksgiving, and I have to say this chow hall, asbestos aside, is the still the best chow hall I have ever eaten at!

The best food I ever had was at the Weapons Battalion chow hall at P.I. in 1968. We came over from MCAS Beaufort to requalify. I told the cook how great chow was, he was happy.

what they did not show you was the screaming because a recruit did not have his head looking straight up and was looking at his food instead

Contrary to the stereo types in some of the old military movies, the food I got while on active duty in the Army and in the Air Force was excellent. The quality and quantity never disappointed.

Ooh rah, I did thanksgiving, and Christmas at Mcrd San Diego 1989. However, back then, recruits cooked and served the chow, not civilians.

Exactly... was at Parris Island in 1991 and recruits served chow and had to do mess hall duty rotation. It also appears a lot calmer/quieter now when recruits are eating.

I had a week of mess duty while in boot camp. Then when I got to my first duty station after boot I immediately got a month of mess duty. That sucked!

@@lanceclayton9250 I remember mess cranking in Boot Camp and I saw a giant Rat living in the Salad Bar. I told the Petty Officer in charge of the Galley and he just shrugged it off. It was literally the size of a cat! That was over 40 years ago, and I remember it like yesterday, still creeps me out, for the rest of my time at Boot, I never ate anything off that salad bar.

That's not how we went through the mess hall in 1969. This has to be a movie I'm watching. Best chow I ever had was at a Navy base, everywhere else was cardboard with salt or hot sauce.

Do recruits not do mess duty anymore? Looked like all civilians working there. Chow hall was a lot nicer than what we had in '85.

That's cool and all. But what they don't show is the two minutes they get to eat it afterwards. A lot of it is thrown away sometimes.

I loved it to be honest, the base was quiet, everyone was on stand down, so half day work days, until New Years. I rarely ever took leave to go home during my time in the military. Home wasn't home anymore, just a place where you came from.
