Hi, sorry for the lack of videos lately. I’ve been struggling a bit with motivation. But I’ve already made the necessary adjustments. I will be back next year with a new brand new video series. I’m also planning to go back to slightly shorter videos so that I can upload more frequently again. Uploading a new video is after all the most fun part about youtube - so I think allowing me to do that more often should help. ---- Happy New Year !

For those asking about The Guiness Book of records, it was indeed made by the man who owned Guiness Breweries. He and his friend went recreational shooting and got into a argument over which bird was the fastest. He tried to find the information but realised it wasn't published anywhere, and it also occurred to him that people in pubs everywhere must have similar debates all the time with no way to find the actual answer. So he commissioned some people who owned a fact finding agency to write the book and gave a bunch of copies away, presumably to promote his beer. It became an instant hit in homes and evolved into a mainstay.

Among the bad things about receiving a star: you need to maintain standards not only on food quality, but also on service and environment, which is expensive. Some chefs chose to lose a star on purpose to be able to keep a local/family style restaurant.
@TaylorRayborn
@TaylorRayborn 2 жыл бұрын
This is actually very true. I read about a small cafe on the Appalachian Trail that was owned by a husband and wife duo. How an inspector discovered it while on vacation and got other inspectors to visit it and it earned 2 stars I think for how good the food was. But it was a outdoor cafe with wooden park benches, served on paper plates and plastic cutlery. And all these upper crust people and big name critics started to visit and complain and moan about the rustic set up. So they closed down and moved, Michelin even offered them a apology for causing them so much trouble and promised to never publicly give them stars again. They opened another cafe on a different part of the trail in a different state and are still open to this day apparently. Though the name is no longer advertised and they don’t show up on any map or service.

The question Michelin asked, is... What do you do as a business? Do you make tires? No. What you actually do, is you allow people to go places; you allow people to run their cars longer, farther, and to experience new things and grow as human beings. Tires let you do all this, and so do travel guides!

There's a fancy new thing called a car, and we've decided to get into the business of making tires for these cars. Let's print a guidebook that let's people with cars better plan long road trips so they drive their cars more, and buy more tires! Seems to have worked, both the book and the tire company are still around!
@GabbieCh
@GabbieCh 2 жыл бұрын
If you think about it, considering that cars were only for the rich and weren't necessarily needed, the companies wanted to come up with more reasons why they'd need a car, one of which would be to visit good restaurants further away. Idk if that was part of their plan, but it seems to make sense to me.

I think birds because they weigh very little, so it would take many more of them, all with their own ideas for how to burn those calories and not focusing their efforts as a single individual might. If this was a contest between me and my weight in horses, then sure, I reckon I’d require more calories than that tiny horse. But between me and ~35000 hummingbirds? Probably the ~35000 hummingbirds.

Very interesting. I love your videos. I always learn something new, I too assumed that the Michelin star was from the same company though I never new for sure haha, since it is a bit strange that a car company would be assosiciated with the food industry. Thanks for all the informative videos that you make, we clearly see the effort put into them. If you would like to go with shorter videos and producing them more frequently that's your decision, however I do also enjoy the longer videos, as I can sit down and relax and appreciate all the new information haha.

Heres 10 minutes of video in a paragraph The Michelin tyre back in the day wanted a way for drivers in France to know what restraunts and cafes where worthwhile (simmilar to the aa in Brittan) so they got a panel of food reviewers to review these places and if they were good, they got a Michelin star. Nowadays its branched out to only the finest restraunts in the world given out by a panel of specialist critics

I would like to add a few points to the video which is great btw but misses a few vital points. Or rather misconceptions. I’ve personally had lunch/dinner at over 100 michelin starred restaurants all over the world and know for a fact the misconceptions are not true. 1. Stars are only for fancy restaurants. Not true. The quality of the food is what matters. Decor or service have nothing to do with it. 2. Michelin star restaurants are expensive. Not true. Although most are, there is quite a lot of them where you can have 25 euro set lunches, delivering the same quality. 3. You only get a bunch of small bites and leave hungry. Not true. More often than not I struggle at the end of an x course meal. The chefs know exactly what quantities to use to make sure you leave satisfied. I only once felt that I was not satisfied and when the chef came to our table at the end and I complimented him on the taste but explained my feeling. I was asked what my favorite dish was and I was offered a new dish based on similar tastes to ensure I got something new and to my liking. 4. (Fault of some movies) Michelin critics have a fixed patterns like always come in pairs, order specific menus, drop a fork, etc. Not true. The trick is that nobody knows. They could come with friends, family, other critics, alone, etc. They make it seem as natural as possible. An anonymous retired critic once said “I would sometimes take someone to restaurants for birthdays. A critic could be anyone at any table at any time.”

There's a soup bar in Budapest called Bors (7th district, if you're ever there, check it out!). A number of the chefs there received a Michelin star in a different venue (not sure where, I was an expat at the time) and quit so they could serve high quality food to friends and family that could never afford a Michelin star venue after the kitchen received it due to the demand (from expats and the 1% of locals) and felt that the prestigious nature of the award isolated food lovers and hospitality workers. Hospitality for all it's quirks is such a wild industry to work in, and honestly, I couldn't recommend it to anyone. Dope video, thanks for the entertainment!
