I work in the "opposite" field from you. I have to maintain security. I swear, one of these days I may see you on one of my cameras, you reside in my region. (I hope to catch you.) I have learned much from your videos. I have been involved in lock sport for 40 years, and learn more every time I see one of your videos, even when they are retelling the same story. From social engineering to physical security. Thanks.

I can't speak for everyone here but for me: I am not insecurity (physical or otherwise) and I have no plans on becoming a physical security expert. That said, I'm always interested in learning why things that most people take for granted are the way they are and how they work generally. I also got in trouble for latch slipping in middle school because our teacher was late to class, the door was locked, and the gap between the door and the frame was so large I literally used a pencil to open the door and get everyone in the classroom while the teacher had to use their key to get inside and had no idea how we got in there until someone told them I opened the door. Your chill attitude and practical responses to problems you see is always nice to see. I love technically correct answers, but I also love seemingly kludge but simple fixes like the closet brackets to protect from under door attacks.

Hey Sidepocket here. It was so incredibly frustrating to have to cancel out at the last minute going to Defcon. I had to miss a lot of things but this was honestly why the things I was most looking forward to seeing. So even though I couldn't make it there in person, thank you so much for recording it and I hope to finally see this entire circus next year!

We love to watch the long form videos because you're generous enough to share your knowledge with us. Sometimes cons and classes are too far away or too costly and your generosity gives us access to information we might not otherwise have access to.

Really appreciated the demonstration at the end about how to research a tubular lock. I feel like it applies to many subjects - try, don't be afraid to fail but be prepared to start over, learn something each time, don't get discouraged, and be curious and persistent.

I do stuff like that, take the time to superimpose the powerpoint over the video and know what you mean by how it takes forever to get the timing of the transitions right etc. Youre a legend and I truly and greatly appreciate your compassion for people and sharing your knowledge. 💚 A couple of the first videos of yours that i watched gave me the impression that you're a bit arrogant and that made me lean towards not having a good opinion of you, but as i continued to check out your videos, you won me over by showing not only your intelligence and wit, but most importantly, your caring heart. You're awesome, man. 🎉

Is the size 7 pin not to be moved at all. So the control key pushes all other pins down further, but a larger depth for the 7 cut pin, so it doesn't get pushed? Maybe so you can't easily turn a normal key into control.. like a tamper protection? Not sure that makes sense, just going by what I just saw in video, and making random guesses 😂 wish I was there, great hacking at the end! Loved it!

The pin on the side of the body can be pulled. Small drill bit and tap. Drill only the pin then tap. The tap will also pull the pin as you cut the threads. That’s the process I use to clean old locks so that it can still be put back together

The problem I have with those destination dispatch elevators is if you get confused and end up on the wrong car (e.g. numbers are on the right but you think its left and get on adjacent car, or if its going up and you meant to go down and didn't notice due to burned out lights) now you are stuck going to a wrong floor and can't even get off nor add a floor. I've actually been with people who have got fire-keys so they can open the door and input another call just because of such situations happening.

Oh, just wanted to mention- you're a smart dude and maybe you should mock-up a Tube spinner and have your machinist make one. Basically, you'd just need the impressioning tube/ no pins or anything/ boar the pin chambers a little deeper/ and then attach it to a plug spinner. Impressioners don't always work and when they do= they can be tedious and time consuming. The premise is you would just have to pick a tube once= turn so that the pins are just resting on the shear line but not so the re-set in the next turn- activate the spinner= spin past the next sets until it opens. If the plug spinner is wound with enough rotation, you could avoid having to pick some of the tubes which require multiple picks- like more than the standard 3 times. Picking to one set on a tube is really easy. Also. there should be a push tool specifically designed to punch down pins in a tube with a shrouded collar- which I seem to be finding more and more often. Just ad libbing w/ something thin doesn't seem to work great. Also, a re-design for a turner is so overdue I can't believe it hasn't been done. Not all tubes have a detent but most do, and you could simply make a turning tool like a BOK but with a square on the end that fits the notch, then you just have to push down on the turning tool lever just like you would in a Bok situ. Of course, every time you pick to set, and you rotate the core= you would turn the detent, but then you just make another wrench with a slightly different angle to the body of the turner to adjust for that. Most take 3 turns= you make 3 specific turners for each sequence/ label them/ do a product demo= people buy them. I have the Goat and Noob's Multi is even better than that- though I don't think either of them are that great. It's a problem seeking an answer. You have the means to do it, maybe you should. Anywho- thanks.

I haven't watched this yet but thank you. I've had to deal with several door locks that like to bend and or twist keys and I believe that's one advantage to the tubular lock in that it's much much harder to bend a tubular lock key. I'll happily watch this video, thank you for your efforts!

Dissection: Draw a diagram including enough mech-drawing elements to orient the lock you're dissecting in 3-space, and number/label (thought of during Fort Lock Gematic dissection and pin-stack count-out/analysis.

That seems rough, only knowing the world by touch... Makes me appreciate my eyes more

Amazing interaction with and by the visually impaired. Had a student once, it took me a bit to get used to the situation. Apparently I got the hang of it (or they were a good sport about it, got good results in the exam despite of my teaching...). So... yeah. Inspiring. (and I need to do get my colleagues to actually check my work re: accessibility, after my weekend. They already told me they'd not pull punches - which I appreciate and actively look for). (nah, not going for "uh, I'm so great doing this", or somesuch, or "ooh, amazing for...", just in general, good job, I need to up my game and will do that). Oh, and that lock is weird.

So i don't know if this has been posted or figured out yet. I ordered 10 of these and noticed that the 6 O'Clock position on ALL the change keys are cut to 7 but it appears at first glance the rest of the cuts are just moved 1 position. I am gonna try later to copy the cuts from a change key but correcting the 6 O'clock position to match the other keys. I will post my findings here later or my KZfaq Channel.

Tubular locks are my next practice item. I just don't come across them often is all. My chest freezer has one. Which i do have a key for. But im not going to try and mess with that, because. Well i use that freezer, and I dont want to mess it up. I want to learn single pin before i buy an impressioing tool. Just need to find some locks i dont care about breaking. I hope one day to attend defcon at some point. One day maybe. Hope everyone is taking care.

Run OpenBroadCaster on your machine at the next talk. do an app capture or screencapture and just use the shitty laptop mic for audio. Then sync up the main presentation audio with the audio from the screencapture and just resize the screencapture to how you like. That'll make it super easy to do post on a longform vid. (make sure to use the maincam audio and mute the laptop audio for the export cuz garbage mic)

Super cool talk! I really enjoyed y'all collaborating to take apart the lock. Makes me want to attend defcon one day... I think I have a guess about why there's no 8th driver? Perhaps it is so that the lock will only check 7 out of the 8 cuts to match the key pin with the operating shear line. Each operating key then lacks the correct cut in that one position (and instead has a deepest cut so it doesn't interfere with the driverless key pin), so that the whole "I'm a rogue employee and I'll grind off my alignment notch" doesn't work.

47:39 wow… I’ve always been against USA people saying “white privileged” and it having effects on your life. BUT. This guys saying looking like a normal derby middle age white guy…. So he looks like he belongs there… now this actually hit home for me. In this context… trying to blend in, it makes sense. Now, white is not the only factor here. If he had rotten teeth, poor physical health, old ratty cloths, face tattoos, or simply looks dumb, he wouldn’t fit in and pass the initial look test even if he’s white. But… I can think of time in my life where looking normal and speaking in an intelligent sounding way felt like it helped me. But… I also think a clean cut black person that could speak well and had the right style could easily have gotten the same outcome. In fact many people now are more willing to help a person of color over an older looking white male because of the new stigma. Another fact, I’ve heard several white women in public say they wanted a black person to help them because they don’t trust white men. So… in most instances passing they eye test doesn’t have anything to do with color. But, that said… this guy trying to impersonate an IT guy or safety inspector or construction/tech worker, then yeah… middle age white clean cut gonna be your best bet most times. But for things like getting a job…. It only has to do with what job you trying to get from who. Some people hiring are gonna be racist. But… both ways. I can’t get a job at a company that is black owned and only hires black people. Which is totally Racist and nobody calls em out on how awfully racist that is. Could you imagine having an all White College!!!!! The public would crucify you. But not if it’s all black. On the other side… an black guy ain’t gonna get a job from a skin head. Which I think today is extremely rare. Most racist white people been to prison. They ain’t interviewing you for a job. And most of those guys are only racist because it kept them alive when in prison. So systemic white racism is really only a thing today when you talk about the prisoners in a prison system. There are policies that help people of color all over the place. None of them help white people. Pretty much the biggest color discrimination is done for the color green. If you ain’t got that green money then you on the out. 100%.
