Your comment has nothing to do with it. The square is not abandoned, but every country and people has its own habits and mentality! This video was recorded at a time when 85% of Skopje and Macedonians went on vacation in other countries en masse. And that every summer from July to the beginning of October, Skopje is always abandoned. That was the pulse of the people of Skopje until the nonsense with COVID-19 started. We currently have open borders with our brothers in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia. Everything else is closed.

What an underrated capital city with all these impressive buildings, statues and street lights and surrounding mountains! It also looks completely different from the other ex-Yuguoslav capitals, it's like a strange mix of Greek classicism mixed with American postmodernism plus lower typical Balcan stores and restaurants.
@Shako_Lamb
@Shako_Lamb 2 жыл бұрын
Nearly all of the neoclassical architecture and monumentation in Skopje was just built in the last 15 years under the previous administration. A lot of it is historically dubious and seen as an attempt to create a more extravagant narrative than really belongs to now-North Macedonia, and multiple modernist buildings by significant architects were given low-quality quasi-neoclassical facades, but it nevertheless seems to be a very pleasant city to walk around in, and I would be glad to visit one day. The project in Skopje is called Skopje 2014 and it has been entirely halted and partially reversed, hence the number of unfinished-looking buildings in the video. Source: I'm American but writing a college senior thesis about reconstructions in Europe.

Alexander the Great has nothing to do with this country (The only relation is that AFTER his campaign and conquest most part of modern North Macedonia was part of his new kingdom. In that kingdom was Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Bulgaria and many more as well . Should we call them North Macedonia as well?). If you take a look at the ancient Macedonian kingdom map (before Alexander's campaign), you will see that 90% of it was located to modern Greece. Like you said Alexander was speaking ancient greek and he convinced the other greek kingdoms and tribes to join him on his conquest. I would not talk that much about the history of Alexander when walking at this country. I am Greek but I could care less whether they steal our history or they need some way to unite their nation and have an identity. Clearly, people there had the problem of answering a question of "who we are?" But it is a bit sad, when a tourist/ vlogger walks there and the only thing he talks about is the history of Alexander the Great, which is obviously false history. Does this country has nothing more to offer, other than go and watch their statues of lies and talk about history that was not even originated from their country?
@Aleks_Ovski416
@Aleks_Ovski416 3 жыл бұрын
A - you don't know what youre talking about B - the fact that you are upset someone is learning/speaking about Alexander the Great in North Macedonia shows that you don't actually care about Macedonia, its history or Alexander, what you care about is your nationalism and purity. C - " Clearly, people there had the problem of answering a question of "who we are?"" why? Because they don't say we are pure Slavs like the Greeks want us to be? We aren't barbarians who invaded and stole land like they picture us? because we and other scientist have come to the conclusion that our genes are from the Balkans and Hellenic and now we speak a Slavic language from the obvious Slavic element in the Balkans. Why are you racist and want to discriminate against Slavic speaking people? Why are you under the impression that language and history always go together?

Patrick W Yes. According to Prespa Agreement that forced that country to change the name to North Macedonia, in all these statues must put an inscription that they belong to Greek History and not to our Slav neighbors. Am sure they have their own Slav, no need to steal Greek. Macedonia and North Macedonia should have good relations,not hostile.

Old section of Skopje is the nicest city in balkans. Period. Sarajevo is nice too and the old section of Mostar. Unfortunately it suffers a certain tension between Albanians and Macedonians. Ohrid bitola and krusevo are very attractive places. Nice warm people. Great and famous folk music. The true pearl of the balkans like the song of the same name. People are poets. God bless Macedonia and it’s fine people.

I work at a hotel in Struga. If you wanna visit the town be sure to come to Hotel Biser (where I work) or Hotel Izgrev which is better in terms of quality. Both are close to eachother. There is wonderful wilderness combined with a couple of structures nearby. It is slightly outside the town in a really nice secluded part. It is a place for real rest. Second is Bitola, my hometown. Quite a decent place. Couple of ancient history monuments and some newer history ones. Great for Mountainiering. Krusevo and Ohrid are a must too.

Much more toSkopje than meets the eye! Example 6.26 Statue of Emperor Justinian I, born on 11 May 483 in Tauresium (today Taor, near Skopje) was the Eastern Roman emperor from 527 to 565. Given the current fixation with statuary, that missing plaque intrigued me and got me researching. Seems there was a major beautification project started in Skopje in 2014 when buildings were refaced in Classical style and the statues you show were erected. Many of the statues were and remain controversial because of the extremely complex ethnic history of this country (like the whole of the Balkans) - plaques replaced officially only to be vandalized and torn off. At issue was whether or not Greek history was being justifiably appropriated. Also at issue was the expense - many small surrounding villages do not have running water or sewers. Currently it seems there is a move to have the statues destroyed officially, which may or may not occur after post-COVID local elections. (Apparently a statue of Alexander that was at the airport has already gone).It seems even the mosaic mural of Albanian history where you spoke to the musicians is highly controversial, as concerns exist from some as whether it should be there at all. Same goes for the 2 ships you visited which are a cause of division - a third had already been removed in April 2020. (Your videos are prompting me to find out more about these places both past and present, so many thanks).

A nice walk around Skopje. It's a shame that it's empty, young people run away abroad for a better life. And it went well, very well, both in Skopje and in the Republic of Macedonia. Many foreign companies started to invest in the free zones, but unfortunately it bothered someone and broke up the Republic of Macedonia. They changed the flag, the name, they humiliated the Macedonian people. Let's hope that a new generation will come that will restore the name of the country, the dignity of the Macedonians, and Macedonia will flourish again.

Just visited Skopje and loved it, especially the old bazaar, and the people are so friendly. One thing though that bar on the boat has now closed, been abandoned and unfortunately vandalised. There are 2 others of which one was still open for business. This aside the city was certainly full of atmosphere and still very cheap to visit.
