Looking for a serious challenge after deciding Breck’s lift-serviced terrain isn’t cutting it? Look no further than the Lake Chutes, a series of extreme-rated hike-to lines at the very top of the mountain that are not for the faint of heart. These trails range from typical expert pitches to some of the hardest in-bounds terrain in all of Colorado.
Breckenridge is a ski resort in the Colorado Rockies. See our full mountain review here: www.peakrankings.com/content/...

It is an effect your brain has on your body to tell it to not go down and will happen on the majority of slopes you ski but lake chutes is still extreme terrain and some of the toughest in bound terrain you will ever ski

My ski popped off halfway down first time i tried these i was so pissed but it was probably my fault for not knocking off my boots good enough after the hike. Went back up after lunch and crushed it so its okau

The Lake Chutes area might be my favorite zone of all time (minus the hike)! I've done Wacky's, Zoot Chute, and 9 Lives and I've had amazing experiences with all of them! Never done Vertical Cornice but I always assumed that it'd be harder than Wacky's. It's cool to know that there's an easier path through it, I'd love to try that one at some point! Thanks for the video, these lines aren't well-marked so it's great that something like this exists! :)

Thank you! It's not unreasonable to claim that VC is tougher than Wacky's--that first drop is pretty brutal--but Wacky's sustains a really tough overall pitch and extremely wind-susceptible face.

Thanks for the cool video. I remember Breck in the 90s before the lift to the top was added. IIRC, a poma lift dropped you off, leaving a long hike up the ridge.

Yes, the Imperial lift certainly cut a substantial portion off that hike!

Reminds me of just how much of Breck I've not yet skied. Of course the last time I was there imperial & the peak six chair would open in the morning and understandably close by noon due to high winds. Favorite run up there to date is taking the saddle over to peak 7 off imperial and skiing straight down the front. I believe that is the longest steep chute on the mountain, the chute through rocks is narrow enough to get your attention but no picking your way through a rock field is required.

My personal favorite area of Breck is called "Snow White" on the trail map...you basically just keep traversing past all these chutes and hand skier's right at the very end. There, you'll find about 1,000'-1,500' vertical of perfect steep pitch terrain and, at least when I used to hit it, I had it to myself. You can find rock features if you like, or you can just rip the 35-40 degree burn

Some skiers are many Patrolers know about the dangers created by high wind bursts, within sculpted snow formations. These can be in both open bowls, and chutes. I actually went full airborne, spinning three times within a thick cloud or swirling snow, and slammed face first against a packed wall, in a trail fork at a popular SW ski resort. My helmet had a visor, which prevented a flattened nose and being knocked unconscious.

I love Breckenridge and lake chutes. The hike is not long, but can be brutal if you aren’t acclimated to the altitude. First time I went up there I happened to meet a guy from my hometown. We chatted for a bit and then went our separate ways. I followed some locals down Wacky’s and maybe 15 minutes later I ran into the guy again at the bottom. He didn’t look too thrilled. Turns out he tumbled all the way down and broke his wrist on a rock. Vacation over 💀

If you want the steepest line, go to crazy Ivan 2. It is between vertical cornice and zero chute. It’s the steep line with no rocks. It is over 45 degrees steep.

Drink water. Don’t go up on your first day if your from the flatlands. I did it last week on my 4th day and still got some altitude sickness. 13k is very high up. Grew up skiing in the Andes, and that is 11k. Most resorts top at 10k. Thanks for vid.

This is super random, and completely unrelated to Breck or anything, but if you ever get the chance, you should make it out to Xinjiang, China. I skied there in January and March, and there is some absolutely incredible terrain out there on par with anything the Rockies has to offer. The conditions are amazing too, and the season stretches out to May or later. Because of how long it takes to get there, there really aren’t too many crowds there either! Lmk if you want more info!

No way are the Lake Chutes some of the hardest terrain in North America. Squaw, Jackson, Snowbird, Alta, Big Sky, Bridger, Alyeska, Alpental, Baker, Crested Butte, Telluride, Taos - all have WAY steeper terrain. Only thing challenging is Breck’s shit, wind-blown snow.
