I think we could do with a similar system here in Europe. But without corporate of government snooping and endorsing freedom of speech. It should be created as a kind of public service paid for by us as taxpayers. That means you could get rid of a ton of other, foreign owned apps. There should also be a desktop version so you can sync between platforms.

I don't understand. What is the advantage of having to one an app to access your apps, instead of having this apps directly on your phone? I mean sure the mini programs install faster, but I don't see why Andoid/ios couldn't be just as simple. There is no technical reason to have apps inside an app.

Sometimes it's more convenient. It's hard to describe, but WeChat has a different feel to it. It kind-of guides you to be a more focused person while using it. But there are way too many restaurant mini-apps, and they can be annoying. I still use like 8 chat apps besides WeChat though, but most Chinese people will be like "nah, no way I need another chat app."

Except for the easy payment I don't see anything that they do better than other apps. sure I may have to have more apps installed but its maybe 1 more click and at least I'm more in controll of who sees what parts of my data.

I don't believe there's a monetization feature like on KZfaq. But popular creators will charge companies to feature their products. They call this "KOL" (key opinion leader) marketing.

I think once Apple creates a social network and search engine(assuming they don’t get sued for it), and once App Clips takes off, we’ll have something similar in the US on our iPhones.

@@Drannn54 I agree with you. App clips has been around for several years. Nobody uses it. It is not as intuitive as Wechat mini programs. Apple creating a social network? Google tried that and failed already with Google plus Facebook already exists outside china. And apple is not beating Google in search outside china Wechat is a completely different beast that no one outside china or even inside china can emulate. Wechat is deeply integrated into the physical world in china. There is nothing like it, not even Line in Japan. And you are right, apple is hardware oriented.

with the miniprograms being a thing, im surprised there isnt just a wechat os, like ditching android & ios and straight up the entire os is just wechat and the apps you can get are miniprograms, that might be big in china but im not 100% sure, its also still good to have other options so android would probably be the best still, but im surprised tencent hasnt made that yet

2 years later and i cant verify myself on wechat :/ and cant dream of ever finding out why exactly, since wechats support speaks chinese only.... Each time im finishing the personal and then adding bank card it tells me country is not supported which is weird as on their website i see czech and serbia are supported (czech living in Serbia) Its pity as i want to be able to pay for some tencent services but cant...

@@TaitLawton I'm in Mexico with a Mexican number, AFAIK Mexico isn't banned. I've tried to sign up countless times, it always gives me the “Incorrect number” error. I'm starting to believe I must be shadowbanned or something. Maybe they profiled me before I even signed up. I have to try with a new number to see if it works.

Looks like you,re blind or something. The UI is very clean. Now facebook, that is a mess. Instagram is even worse. Facebook slaps a desktop app on mobile. Wechat on the other hand has a very mobile UI. Wechat has a lot of functionality but is not cluttered like facebook.

It's possible but could be hard. I heard you'll need a VPN, and you'll need to download the .apk file from somewhere other than Google Play. Plus you'll need a phone number that isn't from India. (All secondhand knowledge, we don't have anybody in India to actually test.)

There are ads, but relatively few. Tencent makes most of it's money from gaming and other things. There's also very little spam from brands that you follow on there. They can't DM you to death. There is spam shared by friends though.

From a Chinese bank account you connect to WeChat. Or by receiving money from somebody else. Perhaps it connects to banks in other countries too, I'm not sure.
