Neil Peart was a Canadian-American musician and author, best known as the drummer and primary lyricist for the rock band Rush. Peart has received numerous awards for his musical performances, including an induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1983, making him the youngest person ever so honored. He is known for his technical proficiency and creative ability to compose behind the drum set.

Drum Channel founder Don Lombardi comments: Neil Peart's loss was devastating on two levels. First, of course, to the entire drumming community. As Jimmy Chamberlin recently commented, “A piece of Neil lives in nearly every contemporary drum part in rock- whether people realize it or not.”⠀

Secondly, on a personal level. Before every tour, Neil would block out a Drum Channel studio for a full month to practice before Rush rehearsals even started. One big lesson I definitely learned from Neil is always be prepared.⠀

While he was at DC we would have lunch every day in my office and he would always want to know what other drummers might be coming in to visit or record. It was always amazing to me that he was just as excited to meet his drumming idols as they were to meet him.⠀

There are so many great memories. I once bought a light at Restoration Hardware because I thought the wing screw design would be perfect for the Time Machine set- and Neil agreed.⠀

When he liked something he would just light up. If he thought something was not quite right, he would never say he didn’t like it. He would just say, “Let’s try something different.”⠀

Neil cared greatly about education for drummers and the importance of having a good private teacher. He almost quit drumming at one point but his teacher encouraged him to keep going.⠀

As a black kid starting out playing in the church, I actually got more inspiration from Neil Peart from any other drummer. I heard Subdivisions for the first time and I was HOOKED. RIP Sir.

Never cried over anyones death that I had never personally met until Neil. But I wept when he died. He is why I am a drummer still today at 51 years old. He was amazing over all drummers to me. May he Rest In Peace…. Much love for Rush…

I’m 31, my father raised me on Rush. I saw them 3x during the Vapor Trails and Snakes & Arrows tours. I went and saw the Time Stand Still doc in the theater, I cried as the credits rolled. The ending painted quite a grim picture for my three favorite musicians of all time, especially Neil (as a drummer myself). I got choked up just listening to Chad speak on the topic. Intense stuff. Like the passing of a wise distant relative.

Same. I didn't think I would break, but later in the evening on the day he passed, I sat alone at my computer and (probably stupidly) pulled up the live version of "The Garden" on youtube. That was it. I have never felt that way about the death of any other musician/ celebrity or what have you. But the driving force behind my OWN drumming had gone and it hit like a freight train. It still stings, y'know?

Me too. I was at this venue, my wife was set to play in an hour or so when she ran to me with her phone, telling me "Whoa, Neil has died" and I was like "WTF you must be kidding" and she showed me the news on the phone and I kind of froze. I think I didn't speak for at least 30 minutes, wandering aimlessly avoiding eye contact with everyone in the venue and crying. I still cry to this day if I watch his videos.

Same. He had an immense and positive influence on my youth - I took up drumming because of him! Broke my bloody heart when I heard he’d died. So unexpected - both the event and my reaction. Still miss him.

The main thing about Neil is his composition. Just by his drumming alone, you can tell which song it is. That's rare. That's what makes him exceptional.

A friend and I listened to the song subdivisions when he passed away. I remembered it as a quaint song from the 80s that was past their high point for me. Wow, was I wrong. My friend is a drummer, and he was grinning. I just couldn't believe how many different approaches Peart took to every single damn section of the song and accent of the rhythm AND the melody. Holy christ.

"I have the Canadian swing" that cracked me up - but yes, to us [Canadians] - he's ours and for sure he knew all about how people idolized him and thought he was the best but at the same time knew exactly where he was in relation to all of the other great players - jazz, rock, funk, latin or otherwise. One of a kind. R.I.P. Neil. Very nice tribute by Chad - well done.

The album PRESTO, and specifically The Pass and War Paint, literally saved my life when I was a teenager. That whole album is very personal to me, but those 2 songs, back to back, really helped me through a very dark, and self-destructive phase. Hearing Neil's lyrics about how "all of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers turn to look at the stars" and "all of us spend time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars" , hit so close to home for me, and what I was dealing with. They helped me realize the shit I was living through, wasn't unique, that others had the same troubles I did, and were able to make it through, and so could I. I do not think I would be here today, if not for RUSH, and Neil's lyrics in particular.

Thank you for sharing that with us. I am so glad you were able to survive those dark days. In my opinion, Presto is not mentioned enough among Rush fans. The Pass and War Paint are shining jewels. It's always satisfying to hear from people who share my opinion on that. Even though it was difficult times for you.

Agreed, I feel the same way about Presto and for sure it and they were a Major influence in my life especially my formative years as a young man and a drummer. They and specifically Presto helped me through a dark time while I was starring at (then surviving) a 5 year Prison sentence for Marijuana. I was suicidal, I did not think that I could make it. Neil's lyrics and RUSH music got me through. Rip professor. We were ALL lucky to have enjoyed and still enjoy some of the Best musicians ever to play some very special music. Truly my favorite band. What a great tribute, hearing Chad tell his stories was my same experience as I loved the same drummers very influential John Bonham, Stewart Copeland and many others. Even though I'm a huge Rush Neil Peart fan and no one can touch his own signature technicality I think every drummer including Chad Smith all have their own amazing drumming skills and there's so many drummers out there that we don't even know of that are phenomenal. Maybe you will be that drummer that we see on the big stage one day.

Amen. I had just started getting over Neil when Ed went. Neil / Rush have been my hero's since I was 9 and heard Tom Sawyer on the radio. Beyond their musicianship, Rush are all very good human beings. They managed to skip the bad phase of being rock stars. Ed wasn't perfect, but at least he found and kept his sobriety, which in my mind forgives some of the low points.

I was in middle school when i heard Rush and 2112 Overture for the first time...and to this day i will never forget it...i was absolutely BLOWN away. A few years later i was on the high school band and i rode the drumline bus to our performances because i had friends playing drums. Heard the live version of YYZ from Exit Stage Left with Neil's solo. Blown away yet again. Though i never really officially became a drummer (no kit of my own) i can "air drum" to many many classic Rush songs. Fave RUSH song at the moment (it changes...lol) is Analog Kid. Miss you forever Neil but u will never be forgotten! Godspeed and god bless you

Aren't we living in the luckiest generation of all time? We got to see, hear, and learn from drummers such as Neil Peart, John Bonham, Chad Smith, Kieth Moon, Charlie Watts, and many more from this excellent era of music. It is sad that we need to say goodbye to some of these great musicians. But we are lucky to have their music still, and forever. The legacy that they have left us is something to cherish, to share, and to learn, and to teach. They will truly live forever, as long as there are drummers who listen, enjoy, and learn from drummers like Neil Peart. He is an intense and insightful person, who never thought that he was one of the greatest drummers of all time, and thats what made him even greater. Much Love Chad for sharing your Peart story. Rush is on a level all their own, 2112 is my all time favorite Rush album, but there is not a Rush album I do not like, even if they got kinda 80s, in the 80s. Rush was always able to adapt to the times, and stay on top.

I was 13 years old when I heard The Spirit of Radio for the first time. My brain was electrified by that intro. In that moment, I said to myself "I want to do that too". Today, I'm in a Rush tribute band. Having seen Rush live once was a dream come true. Neil is a role model of a true musician for me. Without him and his heroes who influenced both him and me, I would never have decided to, like he said once, "hit things with sticks". Thank you, Professor, for everything. Rest in Power.

that comment just always frustrated him. Even he laughed knowing it wasn't true by a long shot. Be a fan, love him as your fave, but be realistic in your tributes. He is not close to a "best". Neil Peart was MY HERO! Neil's music and lyrics got me through my "restless dreams of youth". My father was very verbally abusive. So, I would escape by putting on my headphones and just get immersed in the music as if that was all there was in my world. Rush kept me going. Yes. I graduated from UT Austin got married and had a family. I cannot say that all happened because of Rush, but they were a big part of it. Thank you Neil and happy birthday. We all miss you terribly. But it does give my some comfort to know you are now with the Watch Maker and all the Clockwork Angels. Thank God for Neil.

I’m a guitar player and the first Rush concert I ever went to was Permanent Waves in 1980. The next concert was Moving Pictures in 1981 and I had my whole band go. Our drummer was already a fan, but after that, he went really nuts on Neil’s stuff.

I'm not a drummer but loved Rush after discovering them during my high school years in the late seventies. Neil's lyrics and love of literature inspired me then to devour so many books and discover new authors. I was always scanning the lyrics for references and allusions and Neil's brilliance never disappointed. Even non drummers could sense his prowess behind the kit but I'm eternally thankful for his love affair with a different type of stick - the pen. Some day maybe I'll trade my Mont Blanc for some Vic Firths but regardless Neil will always be there.

I was 11 years old, in the summer of '80, and one of my friends plays Permanent Waves for me. Watershed moment. I immediately knew that this was the direction that I wanted to take my playing. The power. The complexities. The nuance. I had only been playing for a couple of years, at this point, so I was still very impressionable, but that was the day that I found my biggest influence. RIP Neil.

I'm 55 and a Rush fan since the mid to late 70's. I always loved the music but it was the drums and lyrics that fascinated me. The fact that Neil keeps inspiring and motivating people, whether it be drumming or biking or hiking or writing is just a testament to who he was as a person.

Thankfully, I learned very young how Neil was humble, grateful and kind. You are never “too good” for this. When my drum instructor sent Neil his transcription of Tom Sawyer for 5 piece kit, Neil responded with a post card thanking him. That card was pinned to the cork board in the studio inspiring us all to learn and give back.

I'm not crying, youre crying! True story, it was Jan 7, 2020, and we were in the middle of COVID. My life was crumbling around me, when I get a call from my best friend, telling me how sorry he was. I was like, what are you talking about. I had been shut off from the world for weeks.... I turned on my computer and saw the news.... I was devastated. I couldn't listen to them for years. Even today, it's hard for me to listen to them because they are the soundtrack of my life! There are so many memories that ebb and flow as a song comes on that its hard for me to be present. I really appreciate you sharing this with me! I love hearing the testimonies of famous musicians share the impact that they had on them. It is really special!

Amen Chad, I was driving on I93 through Concord,NH when I heard the news of Neil's passing. I had to pull off the highway and weep. As a bassist myself Neil had such an effect on me but it was his words that got me through a lot of tough times in my teenage years. I was devastated. God bless Neil and all who loved him.......and please bring Peace back to the world.

Hearing his warm, welcoming voice at the end choked me up. What an amazing human being. He not only influenced me as a musician but as a person. I've passed on some of his knowledge to my children. "I was never bored because I always found ways not to be bored. What's the most incredible thing I can do today?".....one of my favorite Neilisms

That was awesome Chad. "A real poor man's version of Neil's kit", just totally cracked me up. I think most of us young Neil fans had one of those back then. Mine had different color drums, brands, and even drums rigged up hanging from mic stands or whatever would hold them up, just so I could have all of those toms like Neil. Two of my all time favorites, Neil and Chad. God bless both of you.

Great job Chad. Excellent tribute for a man that has influenced so many. Like you and many others, I listened to 2112 over and over, never getting tired of not only Neil’s drumming, but also the incredible music. I’m so glad that I grew up in that era.

My first concert was London Gardens 1977,(London ONT) and that was when his kit was in that cube. I guess it was better than tearing down the biggest touring drum kit ever(and since). After Max Webster played, we all saw him kinda sneak into "the cube" to warm up for the show. I swear that at least 60% of the folks all shut up and listened. The lights go down...And they start A Farewell to Kings. Loud loud. But the second tune was Anthem........and I had never before seen a musician of any discipline play with such power, ferocity, yet everything was so musical. Then they played 2112 in its entirety. I was 12. Took 'till high school to find other Rush fans. And they were as ravenous as I was. I tried to keep it short.....shit. Happy Bday Neil.

I watched the documentary (I own) Rush in Rio and realized that the band couldn’t hear (monitors) over their earbuds (the crowd) and they were so enlightened by the crowd in Brazil you could see it in their faces and their performance. Rio rocked that place👍🙏🏻

I first heard '2112' in High School and instantly knew I would love this world class band for life! That whole album, to me, represented masterclass musicianship, raw artistry, emotion, power, and dynamic range (soft passages, then hard rock) I had never heard before! What an honest and beautiful tribute to an extraordinary human being. I had the honor of getting to know Neil when The Steve Morse Band toured with Rush on their Power Windows tour in 85//86. My profile as a drummer changed overnight, thanks to Neil's drumming audience which numbered in the thousands on a nightly basis. He was a one-of-a-kind individual, with so many talents, interests, and abilities. Thanks, Chad, for telling your personal story of how Neil Peart changed your life.

I was a kid that attended one of those shows back in 85/86, it was amazing to see Rush but I distinctly remember hearing the Steve Morse band kill it as well. Spent the time looking for your albums over at Tower Records and became a huge fan. Thanks for everything, and thanks for commenting here. It's ironic though. With all Neil's technical drumming and deep lyrics, he summed things up with one simple word in an interview. "Care". He put a lot of care into everything.

This video made me emotional! I love Chad, he seems like a cool, down to earth guy. I feel like I have to meet him, while wearing a Zep shirt bc Bonzo is my everything. My phone played Moby Dick and YYZ back to back the other day and I couldn’t help but smile. Neil seemed like a true gentleman and hell of a drummer, may he rest easy 🥁💕

Yes, Exit Stage Left was the quintessential Rush for me as a young pre-teen and teen. Still one of the best live albums of any group to date.

Neil Pearts drumming spoke to me unlike any other drummer has ever achieved .I didn't want to be a front man or guitarist I wanted to play drums . That's the difference that Neil did was speaking a different language through percussion . Steward Copelands " your my second favorite drummer' is actually true for me and now he's my first living favorite drummer.

I was in the sixth grade and a neighborhood friend brought over "All the Worlds a Stage" 2112 live. When I first heard that album and the drum solo I thought it was two drummers...lol. I was in awe and was hooked since and bought every album they put out after that. People don't realized back then they were obscure and unknown and were really a cult band. I was the only one in my school to listen to them up until "Moving Pictures". I remember back then I couldn't wait for the next album to come out and hear what they would come out with next. Then Hemispheres came out and that was just a mind blowing experience. God I miss those days. Of course I went to every concert beginning with 2112 which was an experience I'll never forget. I practiced and learned just about every song on every album back then. When I heard of his passing it was the only time I ever shed a tear for anybody I didn't know personally. RIP NP

Chad , this is an outstanding reflection on Neil. Thank you! You’re such a class act and inspirational drummer/performer. This was a pleasure to watch. After finding Rush in the late 70’s when I was a young drummer, eager to find inspiration to push my practice and craft, following Neil for my life has been incredibly special. I spent a thousand hours listening and figuring out just how intricate and difficult his parts were, and how challenging and rewarding it was finally be able to perform them with some proficiency. Falling in love with so many of the great drummers in the past 4 decades, Neil was just always the most unique standout. His creativity above all made him a one of a kind, and his sound and signature style just elevated him even further. Being an avid listener to all kinds of music, I am a fan of Matt Scannel and Vertical Horizon (met them when they were part of the Aware record project), and I picked up their album Burning the Days, and I noticed immediately that the drum parts on a few of the songs were different. It felt like Neil! But I was telling myself, it just can’t be. Sure enough when I looked at the credits, Neil it was! I guess all the years of listening and studying him, gave me some Neil radar. My Rush collection is one of my most prized things…and I don’t believe there will be another like him in my lifetime. I’m eternally grateful that I got to grow up during the time of Rush’s rise and 5 decades of music. Neils compositions and writings will forever be missed.

THANK YOU Chad for this amazing touching memorial birthday wish. I was crying (and laugjing) the entire time watching this. Rush was THE BAND that started it ALL for me as far as really getting into music/prog rock and wanting to play guitar (like Alex) after my friend (back in 1982/83) gave me a cassette tape of Moving Pictures on Side A and Signals on Side B. I played that tape every night with headphones on and was learning and doing air drums/bass/guitar on every song. I wore that tape out!!!! what a Band. Only those THREE guys could make a 3 piece sound so HUGE on the album and live!!!!!! Legends. Hall of Famers (finally) and the band that paved the way for me to get into so many other rock/metal/prog bands after that...... I miss Neil so so much and it was such a shock last year. There will never be another Neil. Only Mile Portnoy (of Dream Theater, my 2nd fave after Rush) could do Rush/Neil justice on the playing drums like/for Rush. God Bless. RIP Neil.

I was born in Los Angeles and a teenager during the seventies. It was awesome being able to see so many bands and concerts during this time 70 - 80's. Of all the great bands that I was fortunate enough to see live, none put a mystical lifetime spell of wonder, amazement and sheer enjoyment on me like Rush. I have few regrets in life I've been super lucky, seen Rush many times over the years but not being in attendance August 15, 2015 at the Forum is without question my biggest Regret! I had no excuse besides the day to day doings of life which is No excuse. I really thought that they would chill and do some selective shows later down the road. This will forever haunt me ..... moral of the story as bands, athletes, teams, race car drivers whoever or whatever turns you FN ON don't wait go seem um learn from my mistake, you'll look back and be glad you went. Oh and Chad you friggin Rock!

I met Chad at Modern Drum Fest Weekend at Montclair State college in NJ in early 90s I think it was, he was so Personable and he gave another headliners snare and gave it to a kid, loved his set.

My favorite band since I was 15 in 1981. I was lucky enough to befriend Alex as well and also got to meet Geddy and Neil. THESE GUYS WERE THE BEST...NO OTHER BAND COMES CLOSE. The level of integrity, friendship and dedication to the craft is UNMATCHED...👊💚👊

Listening to chad, I can feel his passion. We have so many similarities it’s insane, lol. I am canadian like Neil, but I can relate to chads up bringing and love of rush and Neil’s drumming! I saw Rush on that same 1980 tour that Chad talked about. I’ve seen them 3 times since including the last tour! Neil impacted me like no other! I met Neil twice both times amazing! The 2nd time I asked Neil for a lesson, he said” I’m no teacher, go see Freddie Gruber” while I was a little disappointed, I grew to learn about freddie and studied with some of Freddie’s students! Changed my life. Thanks Neil and thanks chad for the awesome tribute!

Awesome tribute to The Professor... Growing up i couldn't stand hearing Rush and Tom Sawyer on the radio, but once i started playing music in 2000, i was short cook at pizza gut in high school and my boss was like your playing bass, listen to these cds and he hooked me up with Rush retrospective 1-2 and I've been hooked ever since. Neil is 1 of the greatest drummers to ever walk the earth, but with ever great drummer their is a great bassist... Geddy and Neil are a powerful rhythm section RIP Neil

so well said... This made me Flash back to 78, where 4, 15year old boys in a Ford Pinto in a Gary Indiana Winter after wrestling practice jamming out to 2112 in the 8 track player. Love all you musicians who add the joy of music to our lives.
