A TRIP TO THE MENS SHOE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD - NORTHAMPTON, ENGLAND

The Northampton area, right in the geographic centre of England, is rightly referred to as the capital of the mens quality footwear world. A significant number of the best mens shoe & boot manufacturers make their home in the area and the subsequent skill-base of the local population, honed over many generations of the same families working in the shoe factories, means that that some fantastic shoes and boots are made in the various factories in the area.
On a recent multi-point business trip in the area, I took the liberty of stopping off at the factories of Loake, Cheaney and the Church manufacturing facility in Northampton itself. In this video I explain what I discovered on my trip and explain what bargains can be found in the factory outlet shops, where imperfect and 'end of line' shoes and boots are liquidated as a fraction of their retail price.

I live in Northamptonshire borders hence I'm often visiting factory shop's of Loake, Grenson, Crockett and Jones, Trickers, Cheaney and grap a bargain hence I've got a boot addiction. Owned 50 plus pairs at one point

Excellent and informative video there Ash.I live In Northamptonshire and I am a regular at these places,although you never know what is on offer.I find that J cheaney are the best bet.I normally pick up a nice pair or two for about £170 a pair.They have a 20% sale on at the moment.

I really enjoyed my visit to the area and my trips to just a small number of the legendary shoe manufacturers. I think Cheaney was indeed my favourite stop, as the chaps in the shop were very chatty and really engaging. I only have a single pair of Cheaney chukka boots in my collection, but I suspect that may well change very soon. Take care my friend, Ash

I believe the Edward Green factory shop is open most days also they usually have a lot of seconds shoes at around half price. Interesting content! Particularly interested in Cheaney as I really rate them also. When I visited Crockett and Jones they said that their factory stock on sale was very limited.

I'm a big fan of Cheaney, they fly a little under the radar and are a little more modestly priced as well. They also sub-contract to Herring (i.e. make shoes bearing the Herring name), which is a shoe company I find reasonable. I sadly didn't have time to visit C & J, but maybe next time.

The Chap's Guide you saved yourself the disappointment then with Crockett & Jones in terms of choice. Wonderful factory from outside and reception! Like going into a time capsule.

A terrific video Ash. Your energy in pursuit of quality shoes comes through. Coincidentally went on a factory shop tour yesterday. An exhausting day but Cheaney definitely a highlight with a easy chatty atmosphere created by the affable gents Barry and Dan. Scooped a bargain brogue and later Trickers where we enjoyed a half hour in the company of the friendly very tall assistant where again I got lucky. Btw Grensons no longer have a factory shop and Solovair closed. Due diligence would have saved us some type wear and disappointment. Thanks again Ash for all your hard work.

A word of warning .... .If you visit the Cheaney factory shop , don't take your wife. The shop also has very nice traditional ladies shoes so your expected big saving exists for seconds. This has also happened at my nearest Loake's shop.

Great video; thank you! I'm planning a trip to England (from Vancouver, Canada) this spring. How many of these shoe factories/ shops could one reasonably visit in a day (with no other obligations and using public transit)?

Public transport would be a big obstacle to success in this endeavour, as many of these locations are likely not on bus routes and taxi costs would not be viable. If using a car, you could easily visit 5 or more factories in a day. I did 3 in an afternoon and did not feel pressed for time.

back in the day men spend half of a weekly check on good boots, got men today bitching about 800 dollar boots, if that's too much u need a better paying job. id love someone to build me a pair of shoes that were all leather. i love Alden, but they have been slacking in using none leather in their shoes but still charge the same or more.

English slight imperfections probably wouldn't bother me at all as they were explained in this video. -------- Warning, Florsheim imperfections or seconds are really really bad. Not even worth fixing.
