UPDATE! I never expected to get more than 20 to 50 views. LOL Now this is at TWO MILLION! The comments are interesting and funny. Many are insulting but that where we are in the world now. Someone doesn't like something or disagrees, just use throw out an insult or go on the attack. I guess when you are insecure, it makes you feel better. Psychology 101.
It's A new twist on a squirrel-proof bird-feeder. Okay, the feeder is really designed to be a Chickadee feeder. So far, it has worked. No squirrels were hurt in spite of falling about 12 feet after failed attempts at stealing bird seed. The feeder was installed months ago, and so far no squirrel has been able to get to the seed. They jumped on and immediately slide off to the ground 12 feet below. Ouch! Flying squirrels! Okay, the "thump" is a sound effect created by my fist hitting a pillow.. So don't be concerned about a squirrel hitting granite. It's all for our entertainment...the squirrels and the birds.

They tend to be very adaptive creatures. A friend had a feeder that was being visited by the fuzzy critters, did everything to keep them from the feeder. He finally put it on a smooth steel pole with a wide angled shroud that was covered with a thin layer of grease, they just slid off on the ground when they jumped in it. One of the squirrels went up a tree that was some distance away, went out on a very slim limb and set up an oscillation on the limb. when the limb was moving up and down at a good rate he used it as a catapult to launch himself to the feeder, landed on top of the feeder and went to feasting while he looked at us watching him. They will also work in teams to overcome an obstacle.

I just need to clarify...I don't hate squirrels. I am amused and amazed by them. They are clever little creatures and its fun to watch them analyze situations, but bird feed is for the birds and it's not cheap, especially when it gets gobbled down by furry little pigs. They don't seem to get the concept of sharing.

Also they are able to pocket large amounts of bird seed in their cheeks that they bury or hide, "squirrel away," and quickly come back for more. Where we live they will do that continuously until there's nothing left for any bird or squirrel, more than they will probably ever eat. My husband and I enjoy and admire the squirrels and put out peanuts for them but it's never enough. They are big time hoarders. Right now my husband just puts out an amount for each every day and says it's too expensive to put out any more everyday and whoever gets it, gets it. He likes all animals, as I do as well. We've tried a few things, unsucessfully, and my husband just gave up, but this looks like it is worth trying. Thank you!

I actually quite like watching squirrels, they're determined little critters. But they are funny too sometimes! We had a simple bird feeder in our yard that was just a greased pole. We saw many squirrels try to get up it but quickly realised that it wasn't possible. But on one occasion one particular squirrel seemed more determined than the rest. This squirrel spend a good while trying, and the more it tried the more agitated it got, its tail started twitching more and more, and it began chattering furiously! By the end it was totally demented and started bombing it around the yard attacking any birds that were close enough! I've never seen anything so funny in my life, I wish I'd got it on video!😂

I've watched squirrels destroy two different supposedly squirrel proof feeders. Acrobatics, and much entertainment ensued. One the rodent bounced off a window to get the proper trajectory to reach the feeder. At that point although the squirrels weight closed the feeder, it wrapped its body around the cylinder of the feeder, and proceeded to chew its way through the sides of the cylinder. Which then collapsed, and seeds galore. On another which had no place to perch, it leaped of a ledge, twisted sideways, and then drop kicked the feeder until it was upside down. Broken feeder on the ground. Again there was many seeds, and there was much rejoicing in squirrel town!

I was house sitting for a friend whose family fed the birds. They also had ravenous squirrels that would clean out the feeders like there was no tomorrow. So, I lined the deck railing that led to the feeder w/tubs of water so they couldn't traverse the railing but they'd find a way, no matter how many tubs of water I added and soon it became a game, lol! Everyday, I'd go out w/a new-fangled deterrent and I think the squirrels just looked at me from the trees laughing their heads off so I'd get out of the way and let them bust through yet another lame-brained deterrent, hahaha!🐿👀

I built something like this a few years ago, except it was mounted on line, not pipe, the kind of line that is used to hang laundry. It was really the same idea, with the pipes turning and a round plate. After a month or so, I ended up seeing a successful squirrel jump 5 feet over the turning pipes and the plate, and land on the wire, which he couldn't see until he jumped. He was the only one in the yard who could do this, but then he did it every day without any problem. The line was attached on one side to a tree, on the other side it was a stake with a rosebush that grazed all around. Very effective against animals. And funnily enough, the squirrel had a kind of ritual before jumping. He would go back and forth on the line, and when he made up his mind, he would hug the tree for 2 seconds and then run and jump.

Excellent workmanship, wish I'd had that kind of ingenuity! For anyone out there like me, wanting a truly squirrel proof feeder, I had an Audobon brand tube shaped feeder that stopped EVERY.SINGLE.SQUIRREL. I didn't even have to add baffles, or hang it high or away from trees. At one point it was 4 feet off the ground under a tree. The squirrels tried and tried and tried, and after a while simply gave up. It was interesting to see a newcomer try things out, but it was an incredible feeder. Can't remember the model number but it had an outer layer where squirrels couldn't put their head through and if they put their arm through they couldn't reach the seeds. Birds had to put their head through this outer layer but could easily retrieve the sunflower seeds contained within the inner layer.

Someone asked about seeing a close-up of the bird-feeder. Sorry, I had just taken it down two days ago and dumped it. I am working on a new one. I built the old one far too heavy. I used central vac PVC pipe. Bad idea. It's too lightweight to hold a bird feeder for very long, so it began to sag.. My next one will be made from 2 inch plumbing PVC pipe. It has thicker walls. BTW, those spinners are in the plumbing dept at the Home Depot or Lowes. My next one will be taller and stick farther out from the deck.

My current ploy is to hang lots and lots of disposable feeders made from empty Oatly cartons, and fill each one with a very small amount of seed so the squirrels will exhaust themselves running up and down, whereas it’s a lot easier for the birds to flit from one to the other.

i am more merciful, I trained my dogs to hate them and they run around the property freely. Squirrels tend to stay away from a place when they see dozens of other dead squirrel carcasses lying around from being stupid enough to enter the yard with german sheppards that can out run them . you think this sounds cruel, but the squirrels die in about 2 seconds, if that. pretty quick and they don't starve.

Those PVC loops may prevent the squirrel from climbing across the PVC pipe, but it's still not going to stop them from getting to the seeds. Squirrels can jump over six feet. They will eventually just jump from the deck railing onto the feeder.

Best feeder solution I found is one that attaches to my large living room windows. Large sheets of glass flush mounted to a flat wall leaves literally no place for a bird, mouse, squirrel, or anyone else to grab onto... other than the feeder itself. The pigeons sometimes forget this and try to grasp the window seals, but they also end up flapping and falling. Plus, this allows all of us to watch the birds eat from our livingroom couch

I myself love a challenge. All my friends have feeders and they constantly complain about the squirrels. I would comment "Why don't you build one that's squirrel proof?" They all said it was impossible. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! First step was to research the squirrels abilities and shortcomings. Long story short my feeder had three lines of defense. 1. I used 3/4" steel pipe with NPT standard threads. I installed it on my deck where I could enjoy the birds when viewed from my house. It mounted on the deck floor and interior side of the railing. it was roughly 9' tall vertically then went horizontal for about 6'. 2. I installed a baffle I made from aluminum flashing that prevented the squirrels from climbing the pipe. 3. I installed some chicken wire along the outside of the top of railing preventing the squirrel from having a firm launching area. The wire was springy enough to take that advantage away from them. I never laughed so much watching them try to get to the boodle. Watching them try to only fall short and get all out of sorts never gets old. To fill the feeder I would simply rotate the vertical pipe to where I could reach it. Simple.
