I threw a mug on the wheel once and while it was on the shelf drying another student bumped the shelf, it fell, my cup never moved off the shelf but the whole cup shifted to the side creating a crazy shape. It ended up being my favorite.

That is exactly what happened to my "final exam" in ceramics. Added just one drop of water too much to my porcelain bowl. 😫🤦‍♀️ And of course there wasnt time to start over. So I turned in a 'mush' pot. Got a B for creativity. An F in construction, but passed & graduated! Thanks Mr Wright! #EDHS #ClassOf76

I really enjoy your videos. I have saved several flopped bowls by flipping the bowl upside on the bat and let it suspend until leather hard. I watched a demo on it and it has work out most of the time.

It's always a good idea to not let a failure on the wheel discourage a new potter. Love your videos even when things don't go as planned. Keep up the great work JTP!

Thanks for posting this Jon! As potters we have the freedom to throw it 'til we wreck it to learn the limits. Then dry the clay out, wedge it back up and use it again! That's how we learn and get better. It's always reassuring to know that it's not just us beginners who occasionally wreck things when we weren't planning to! Love your channel and love your stuff.

You are not a potter, if you haven't had something flop/ collapse on you. I was throwing a casserole years ago, during some down time, in my Ceramics class. I accidentally hit the pedal, speeding up the wheel and causing the casserole to make a *fun* "thwap" sound. It caught my students' attention. I just sighed, cut it off, threw it in reclaim, and started over. I didn't show frustration, or get upset, because I don't want my students to do so either. You have to find a happy medium between taking pride in your work, but accepting when you have to scrap it and restart.

Exactly! I heard someone else say in regards to working with clay "the more frustrated you are, the more frustrated you'll get". The clay reflects that. Just gotta grab another ball and start again 😊

I’ve never thrown a bowl or cup or anything. 🥴 but I love learning new crafts. I draw, paint, woodwork, leather craft, and want to learn to make my own pottery. I really like earthenware and rustic styles. Thanks for the fail lesson. I wonder if the fine arts department on campus will let me use their facilities? 🤷‍♂️

I've been using my teachers recycled clay as much as I can, My next step is trying to use 20 lbs to make a big vase... hopefully learning how to do a 2 piece.

Love that you kept your failure in this video! Good for people to see that part too, that no matter how experienced a potter is, there are times when things aren't going perfectly. It's called being human, right? People like that honesty and seeing that realness. But they also know by now that you are good at what you do. I definitely have moments or days where the clay just doesn't respond how I want, then I take a step back and reset myself cause a lot of times the clay is showing me where my head is at. 😊💞

Well done Jon for not editing that failure out, I think that will only encourage potters that are not up to your standard that it’s ok to fail and don’t beat yourself up about it, but get back on that horse and try again. A great lesson to us all. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧

I've found that bigger, more delicate looking bowls simply require a bit more left on the bottom to support the wider rims, etc. Thank you for the video.

Lol I just came in from an afternoon on the wheel. It was one of those days where I got mess everywhere, my bowls folded in 3 times. I was going too fast. Took a breather and eventually made the bowl I had intended on 😂😂😂

Can you pretty please make a tutorial on pitchers?! I just started throwing and it's my new project but I need some help!!!! I guess I've already been failing so I'm halfway there.

Just make a pitcher. It's that easy, right? :P Just kidding. Be sure to consider the physics of the liquids, pressure build-up in relation to the spout, etc! Try a bunch of forms with a bunch of spouts, try a bunch of forms with one kind of spout! The biggest thing I've found with beginners is that they are very restricted, in that they are almost afraid to explore. Some of the best learning I've done was over the course of six months with entirely unsupervised access to a wheel and studio (luck me).

Hey Jon, I’ve been throwing clay seriously for about 12 years. I’m not a production potter, but I like potting and I make slightly more $ than my overhead. I am able to throw large, bowls and platters but lately I’ve been having trouble with my base cracking in my bowls while drying and in bisque firing. I usually throw porcelain or Bmix from Laguna. I most often throw a foot. I compress, trim fairly thin and uniform, dry upside down fairly slowly and covered w plastic or cloth. (In winter, as you know, my studio is dry, I’m in Wisconsin). What am I missing? Is it the brand of clay? I’ve had the same problem this winter with Standard stoneware. Thanks, John B. @over.the.hill.pottery.

My cheap little made in china wheel would cry if I tried to make it center 10 pounds of clay, but it does just fine on mugs and modest bowls.

The clay would be too wet to re use immediately. You can get away with smaller pieces but it would just flop again at something of this size.

Same, but the wheel spins the opposite direction and you pull from the other side with left hand on the outside.

Thank you for showing a fail. We all have fails, and being able to analyses how it happens is great. I'd say that beyond too wide, too fast, the clay was also too wet. in throwing, your not just working with gravity, you are also manipulating centripetal force. I think that IF it had been mopped out, and let stand for an hour or two after you brought up the cylinder it would have still been plastic enough to pull into a bowl and stiff enough to hold it's shape. But you throw way more than I EVER have. I'm just saying how I finally got my 20 inch bowl for advanced pottery 2. I had to throw it 25 inches to accommodate shrinkage. Such bowls are WAY easier slabbed and molded over a hump mold, but because I refused to throw for my first year in pottery 1, my pottery teacher told me I would either learn to throw, or he would fail me As a woman who loves to cook, I can not tell you how much I treasured my good 20 inch ceramic bowl

There is a challenge I've seen potters set. Create a tweleve inch cylinder, in no more than three pulls. This does not count collaring.

He has to fire it, glaze it, then fire it again for it to be finished, that can't happen in a day or couple of days. He's in mid process. Or he'd have to wait a week or two to put out the video. He'll show it later in a different video. Pottery is a test of patience. 🙂
