I still have my old iMac from 2004. Back then it looked so sleek and modern compared to other computers. It still functions well, aside from some minor issue on the display because my brother accidentally spray water on it. Would love another imac but here in my country, even old iMac is still expensive imo

@Burtronic
@Burtronic 4 жыл бұрын
Marisa Marino I did a lot of reading and then found a video on here of how to do it. It wasn’t too bad to be honest and I have never attempted anything like it before. I bought a new Samsung hard drive, 16gb ram as per the spec. I also got a housing for the stock HDD. I believe, if I remember correctly, i then Installed the new SSD and ram and booted the computer off the old and now external HDD, I then cloned that to the new SSD. So I had a mirror image of my old system on the new drive. I chose to then reset to factory settings when I was happy I had preserved everything I wanted to keep externally, all photos etc. It took a few hours but it was well worth the money for the drive and RAM. It won’t take on monumental tasks but for everyday internet, word processing, photo editing it’s great. But it does lack in some areas that are far heavier on the processor. Boot up speed and opening documents is fast, I did it so I had longevity for studying my degree through the open university. For me it was well worth the extra cash.

I own a an early '05 PowerBook G4 15" and maxed out the RAM and put a 120GB SSD (OWC Legacy) in it. I use it for light image editing, iWork 09, and I've edited 1080p video on it in Final Cut Pro 6. You are stuck with older versions of most applications, but it runs those older versions quite well. It's not the fastest for editing by a long shot, but for a machine that was new in 2005, I've been able to get it to do things that it was never designed to do. You can even edit in 4k video from a smartphone (just transcode it to Apple Intermediate Codec rather than ProRes before importing it in FCP6).

It's time to rebed the main chips after 10 years. You can use silicon thermal pads instead of paste. Does the same job for all the chips. Heard liquid metal is being used but it reacts with the copper & aluminum. Never used it but it's being discussed as a solution. Reduce the heat by switching over to using SSd`s is the most practical option, while your in dismantle mode replace the dvd writer/player with another smaller ssd to act as your OS drive.

Indeed - I have a couple of 2010 Mac Pro 3,1's specified out to 12 Core 3.1GHz 5,1 spec with 32GB Ram, 4GB GPU, 12 TB RAID and the OS on 6GBs SSD / PCIe card - it will kick the ass of a new iMac and give the silly expensive iMac Pro a run for its money. Plus I have 4 drive bays for RAID ( + 2 via optical space) and 4 PCi slots :) And I could spec them further by stripe raiding SSDs, 128GB ram and a 12 GB GPU but there really isn't any need. Or is there?

I have been considering replacing my dying Macbook with a partially shattered screen and have been really discouraged by the price of new ones as well as my prior belief that Apple products deteriorate quickly and are virtually impossible to bring back to life. Your channel has given me faith in the possibility of refurbishing old Macs and I hope that, for the environment's sake, that catches on. Totally agreed used iMacs is very good, I had a iMac 21 late 2009 I bought new ,upgrade the memory to 16gb , I even installed Mac OS Mojave , even tho it wasn't supported .. It running smooth and great. I just sold 10 years later, now I'm looking to get the macbook air 2020 i5 16gb. If I decide to buy a desktop again I'll buy used and upgrade. Thanks for your videos , I like to watch your channel , keep up the good work!!

Very informative. After getting bad news on what I deemed relatively new MacBook Pro, the Apple Store says is vintage. I spotted the same setup you have at a friends house. She has had it for years. Right now I am sitting on two broken vintage MB laptops. I will never buy one again. But your explanation of how to for 400 ish makes so much sense. I will watch your other videos for more tips. Where do you find good used monitors?

I had basic 2009 20" iMac for a 10 years and it was great work horse but foe some time no updates and getting slow. So last week bought used 2017 21.5" 4k imac for £590 grade C (and to me its like new). For what i do, its ideal and it will last me another 10 years😀👍

Although it looks more sensible to just buy a later generation Mac ,just because it is more capable, I also find it a real joy to give these old macs another life. I just bought the cheapest M1 this week, but in stead of adding 1000€ to get the entry 14” MBP, I bought 2 ,10 year old, dual quadcore Mac pros 4.1 together with 2 x 27” cinema led displays and a 23 inch Cinema Display for 750€. So now I am going to do the irrational thing and upgrade these oldies with dual 6 core processors, a new graphics card , more ssd storage ( 256 now) and more memory ( 14gb now) , thus spending even more money on them. Why? I don’t know, maybe because I love the design of the old MBP so much . One thing I always did when buying a Mac in the last 15 years was is to upgrade the computers out to max specs when the parts were getting cheaper and still very available.i always upgraded my MacBooks with max ram, ssd etc as soon as it made sense financially. Instill use a 13” 2008 unibody as a daily driver for some specific windows software in the field. It still does everything I want .I hated it when apple started gluing in the batteries into the MBP, so now after 8 years I ended up with a retina MacBook Pro which battery went from totally fine ( 320 cycles) to totally defective overnight after closing the lid of the laptop while it was starting up. Apple doesn’t support these anymore , so I need to replace that, which cost me so much time that it does not make sense anymore. What a shame,

Bought a 2017 21.5” base model for $550 delivered. Adding 32gb of ram + 500gb SSD + i7 7700k will bring my over total to under $1k.

For me the mid 2011 mac mini seems to be a good value on budget and plus you can upgrade ram up to 16gb ( 8gb each slot) yes there is two slots and plus you can change the hard drive
@hyphinx
@hyphinx Жыл бұрын
problems: less ram slots than 2011 imac more expensive i think worse performance you need to buy a screen you might need to buy speakers pros: easier to upgrade since there is no screen

I've just returned from MacORama here in Reno, Nevada. They are an Apple Certified Repair facility. They just told me that they are unable to get reliable processors or graphic cards for an old computer like mine, that they have nothing to offer to upgrade it & that I need to be thinking about replacing not upgrading it. I've just subscribed & rang the notification bell. I have a mid 2011 IMAC that has a 2.5 Intel Core I5 processor & a Radeon 6750M 512mb graphic card that I might be interested in upgrading. I added memory to it a few weeks after I bought it & have been using 12GB almost from day one. It already has a 1TB SATA hard drive which is more than sufficient for my needs which is primarily Aperture for my photos. High Sierra is my OS.

Still using a late 2009 27" iMac with intel i7 and 12Gb of RAM, and it really flies on High Sierra! I use it as my daily workhorse (I'm a graphic designer), and it performs pretty well for its age, I'm sure I won't be looking to buying a newer model for the next few years!

64 GB RAM? I'm considering buying it but it's 600 Euro for RAM. Also would like to remove my 512GB SSD with a 2TB or a 4TB if this sizes come later this year. But i'm scared about opening it to max it out.

Lothar Scholz yeah mine has a 512gb ssd but i’m probably not gonna take it apart. i’ve taken apart many macs but with the newer imacs i don’t wana risk damaging the 5k display, i can always tb2 drive for more storage. Also mine came with 32GB ram already so i’m probably gonna leave it, u most likely won’t need a full 64gb but 32gb is a good amt for the price i’d say
