For niche jobs (designer, architect, or cartoon/anime artists), the iPad Pro is a good option and replaces the MacBook Air. However, it is overrated if someone isn't in those niche jobs or careers. If someone really wants one and isn't in those niche jobs/careers, get a previous gen one for less than $400. Use it to distract kids for busy parents, use it on long flights, and use it for late night reading or Netflix shows.

I guess the most important question of all is.... how cost effective is this compared to getting it direct from Apple in the first place

as a logic pro ipad user I knew it was over when they kept hyping this shit up as "logic pro 2.0" and all they did was add like two plug-ins and a new setting feature. notwithstanding that one of the best parts of logic on mac and an integral feature of logic in general, score editor, is inexplicably missing from the ipad version... idk. just a huge L. they're really just going through the motions with ipad after squandering its potential since 2018 introduced the idea of "your next computer... is not a computer" and then proceeding to never fulfill on that promise

I'm Really glad Luke mentioned the artists and creators in this video since a lot of other tech youtubers shrug the updates off as "Lame/pointless" But for those of us who use Procreate/dreams + So many other creative apps the M4 and new pencil features are enough for someone like myself to upgrade from another Pro as soon as the reviews come out regardless of the software. Working on huge art projects at a high res really makes even the current pro chug and third party Desktop drawing displays just don't feel great to use. Super happy about these!

I paint on the iPad Pro and the power and RAM do make a difference, especially with large brushes on large canvases. But you're right that users with less esoteric needs will not need the iPad Pro. I think the OLED tech and the new chip make this a solid refresh. If you have been waiting for a better display like I have in the older iPad Pro 11, then this season was for you, however if you were rocking the m2 12.9 there is nothing truly here for you except relief from blooming. The m4 is the reset chip like the M1 was IE you will see it all over and the iPad is leading the edge. I bought a 11 pro , I have rocked my 11 pro for a long time its my little buddy, and I take it every where and I frankly just wanted something not LED based for a display, my expectations were met with the display change alone. I do think it is a super DICK move to not allow the old keyboard case to work with it, and the old pencil. TIM this is a SUPER DICK move.

Come on, it’s obvious why you have to have a new pencil. It’s because of the landscape camera, they had to move the magnets that connect it. And I’m sure the charging location had to move. So, new pencil, and the old one doesn’t work anymore.

I think since the M4 has the display engine to support Tandem OLED and OLED way better in general, and the M4 is coming to the Mac, soooo, OLED might come to the Mac

the ipad as a product had by far the most potential out of any apple product since the iphone in my opinion. like we're talking about a product that was supposed to shift the way people used and thought about computers, but ever since jobs died they've done nothing but squander it because they are simply too afraid to innovate and of killing their precious macbook dividends

Nice video. I was a pretty early adopter of the iPad only set-up. Like I bought the 2018 pro as my only device, before the ‘what’s a computer?’ ads and before the Magic Keyboard case was even a thing. There were definitely people doing this for maybe 1-2 years before me (I doubt more than that), but we were ahead of Apple on this front, or at least Apple’s public intentions for the iPad. So I’ve invested in the iPad only set-up since then, with a second gen pencil, a iMac Magic Keyboard, a Magic Trackpad and a 3rd party stand (like I say, Apple didn’t offer stands at this point). This iPad is now about 6 years old and so it’s within that 6-8 year lifespan window already. Back in 2018 I needed a Pro if it was to be my sole device (no MacBook or iMac). However I am not an artist, or musician or filmmaker or gamer. I don’t need a LIDAR scanner or the power to run Logic or high-end games. Fast forward to today and my needs align almost perfectly with the new Airs. Yet if I was to upgrade, from the 2018 11” Pro to the 13” Air, I would lose, yes lose on a 6 year newer device, Pro Motion, FaceID and four speaker audio. I would also be unable to use my Apple Pencil with the new iPad. I just feel like my trajectory, as the kind of iPad user that I am, hasn’t been mapped out by Apple well enough. Upgrading to a new Pro would be total overkill and prohibitively expensive. A new 13” Air would cost close to what I paid for my Pro back in 2018, but I shouldn’t be losing features. I don’t think I’m the only one. I think there are plenty of early iPad-as-computer users who originally got the Pro model, but are now more Air users. I just think it would have made so much more sense to have the 2018 Pro as the starting block here for Apple’s 2024 lineup designs, since this was the generation of Pros which launched the iPad design we see across the whole line-up today. In my opinion, Apple should have agreed that no iPad released in 2024 is in any way worse than the 2018 pros. I’d include the base model iPad in this (since it’s been 6 years), but certainly the iPad Air. Just feel like Apple doesn’t care, when across other products there’s always been a sensible upgrade option, which is never a step back.

This is why it pisses me off that Apple calls a simple 120Hz panel "pro motion" like they came up with the technology themselves. They call it PRO motion so they can only include it in PRO models, why would the iPad Air have more than a 60Hz refresh rate? They know most people that have been locked into the Apple ecosystem for years now won't know better.

still rocking the 2018 11 inch ipad pro with the 2nd gen apple pencil for the past 6 years, upgrading to an Air or Pro is alright for ppl like me but the Pro is too expensive now, i mean the price i paid for the 11 inch 2018 ipad pro back in 2018, the same price will now get me an Ipad Air 12.9 inch M2 base model. I don't want a larger Ipad id rather buy a MacBook if i want 13 inch, and i don't want 11 inch (10.86inch in reality) iPad air M2 cause then I lose pro motion. Its been 6 years so I guess its now alright to shell out 1100 dollars for the base 11inch iPad pro M4 or I save money and buy the M2 Ipad air 13 inch (ill accept losing pro motion) or buy last gen iPad pro M2 used or stick with the old 2018 pro till it gets the last Ipad OS which could be Ipad OS 19.

Why are you even compare the price of an iPad to the cost of monthly rent? Many things cost more than a month of rent and what does that have to do with the price of rice in China?? BTW, where I live my monthly rent would be higher than the new base iPad Pro if I didn't own the condo I live in! Also what else would you compare performance to than the previous device in the same class? Yes, when Apple pulled the stunt w/ MacBooks it was questionable but here it makes perfect sense. And yes, we'd better get a vastly improved iPadOS next month or the new iPad Pros are pointless for most people. OTOH, I absolutely hate the weight of my 12.9" iPad Pro M1 and am really glad that Apple made these new devices noticeably lighter and definitely prefer that over longer battery life.

The reason the new pens don’t work with the old iPads and vice versa is because they needed to change the charging structure for the pen to include all that new tech

Sorry mister, my 2015 ipad was €1000 the cheapest back when it came out here in Europe now the new one is close to $2000! (after you chose few normal things as usual..) Apple is preparing the new computer generation, once again I'm blown away by what they do! The M4 is just a way to step the first on the tech as they all rush for the fastest processor. I can't wait for next month event!!! I just see Apple is answering the pros who use just an ipad and the laptop is dead. They first wanted us to kill the tower to get us all use a laptop which will never be my case. Now they want you to forget the laptop and use an iPad! I think they did a very good product hoping it will last decades!
