I went to UVA, and a large portion of my peers had 1500+ SAT scores and were top 10 in their class. Also, the top 10% of the incoming class are selected to be Rodman or Echols scholars - most of my Echols friends had incredible stats and did incredible things. He was definitely not “too qualified”.

@@rishabhsharma5610 I went to UCSB. Students with stats like those are a dime a dozen. If someone gets rejected with those types of stats it usually isn’t yield protection, as no one is actually over-qualified for top-tier 4-year universities, but instead because they’re out of state. Hence, why UVA and university of Washington wait-listed and rejected the person in this video. If they were in-state, they would’ve been accepted.

I think people forget there’s more than one way to be “smart” or an appealing candidate. It can even depend on what major you indicated you’d be interested in pursuing. You could have really high stats but if you want to be an art major the school might not vibe with that too much. Versus someone who maintained pretty good grades and wants to go into engineering. (This is just one example- schools would also take into consideration difficulty of courses, your position in extracurricular member vs officer/some kind of more active role, background- are you maintaining good grades while not having a lot of home support etc, and sometimes just straight up personality. If you have everything going for you but your essay reveals you have the personality of a cardboard cutout they might not be interested. If you’re not as academically inclined but your essay reveals that you’re creative, interesting, and have a perspective that’s intriguing, that could top you over the edge into acceptance)

This is known as a phenomenon called “Yield Protection” Universities do this to try to not make their university/ college seem bad so they end up rejecting. Hope this helps:)

I did something similar to that and I regret it. Had a 5.99 GPA, played soccer, was in chess club, had a lot of AP credits etc. I wish I had just spent more time being a normal teenager ya know, more time playing video games with friends, socializeing, and most importantly, RESTING. I always felt overwhelmed, like I needed to constantly be doing something “productive”, it was so exhausting

I don’t get how colleges reject students so good, especially when people argue it’s because admissions is harder. There’s so many good students that they wouldn’t be accepting anyone average or below average if they care about “ruining their prestige” especially the easy schools like uva rejecting it

I never took the ACT or the SAT. I never did any school activities and went home after school. I went to my local community college after highschool and transfered over to Florida State University. Even in college I went to class and then went home. I now have a degree in Computer Science and am currently in Graduate School getting my Master's degree. What I am trying to say is you don't have to overwork yourself to be successful in college and onwards. You can just do it the lazy way like me.

Most schools deny acceptance to people with exceptional grades and results because they don’t actually expect them to go there and don’t want to waste a potential spot for someone who may not even be truly considering going there even if they are overqualified

when the stats are this good and the results are bad, it's usually a LOR or essay problem. as it turns out getting good stats is relatively straightforward and it's easy to spam ECs of little meaning or effort. Colleges see right through that shit. Quality over quantity.
