The world’s largest sporting retailer, Decathlon, is back as the co-sponsor of a WorldTour cycling team for the first time since 2006.
Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale has new bikes in the form of Van Rysel’s RCR Pro. The Dura-Ace Di2 build, with Swiss Side wheels, is set to cost £8,500, placing it at the more affordable end of the WorldTour race bike spectrum.
In this video, we take a look at the team’s 2024 build in a very cold car park in Lille.

Usually the big caveat of decathlon premium products is availability. Their titanium gravelbike looks great but is rare as hen’s teeth..seems like they make a limited run of premium products that are sold at a bargain just to establish their name, then rake in the money from their more affordable bikes. Great strategy, I just think the cycling world deserves world level bikes at somewhat affordable prices.

people wondering about how this price is possible: Decathlon almost has no profit margin on its bikes. It doesn't have to, they sell so much other stuff. You come in for the bike, you leave with a bike + bottle cages, cycling clothes, tools, lube, degreaser, new winter gloves, etc. About the bike: I was fortunate to build one. feels super solid.

As a former Decathlon employee, team leader of the bicycle department, I can confirm that to be true. Almost zero margin, but sold with advice and setup in the shop, and a very good warranty, all with the goal that customers are happy about their bike and the whole experience, and buy (and come back to buy more) extra stuff, that have bigger margins.

Many people complaining about the affordability. Affordable is relative, for anyone who needs a superbike, but doesn't want to break the bank, this is the affordable option compared to the competition out there. Just like an 'affordable' supercar is quite a paradox, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. You have to compare it within in it's own category...

It is a bike, not a car, with fewer components and R&D. I'm in the industry and I know how much it costs to make one, so companies can still make it affordable and still have a good margin. They are just greedy.

@@fastestmilkman3840 What do you do in the industry ? I'm pretty sure it's not just company greed. Road bikes aren't produced in very high numbers and need an overhaul every 3-4 years, and almost all of the components, bar the frame, are sourced from third parties. They take their cut, the dealer takes their cut,... R&D, design, branding, marketing,... It's a small wonder Van Rysel is able to bring this bike down to that price point if you ask me. I'm not talking out of my ass, I'm an industrial designer and I'm well aware what the cost of bringing a product to market is.

@@TheLimeCurd comparing the components and R&D of a Ferrari and a bicycle is a bit nonsense. The fact you can buy a motorcycle, with exponentially more parts of far higher complexity, for less than the cost of a bicycle says all you need to know about the bicycle industry.

As someone who works at an specialized, cannondale and bianchi dealer. It's absolutely insane to have that low of a weight with that much surface area of carbon. How do you mean not the best grades of carbon? to get the weight this low you have to use them. Also If you now the mark up on bikes like a Specialized, Trek, Koga or Cannondale. @colin1780
@colin1780 8 ай бұрын
@@basvanleeuwen4502 the very best grades of carbon are extremely limited and only a few brands are able to make use of it (or so i've heard, you never truly know as an outsider). It's the stuff that a s-works, lab71 or a canyon cfr frame is made off. Don't get me wrong i'm loving the decathlon bike, but i'd like an engineering explaination of how they are able to pull it off. Hopefully not just making the frame extremely thin and risking ride quality. I've also worked at Decathlon for two years and yes, of first sight it's quite logical. But usually these project get crazy expensive because of development. I'm genuinly thinking Decathlon will lose money by the end of it. Great marketing though

@@Richard-qe7st While I like the propel the Van Rysel is MUCH cheaper. At least in the U.S. pricing is not comparable (although the RCR isn't available in the U.S. yet). I can't speak for Australia. In particular pricing as you go down for the propel is for the Adavanced Pro, which is NOT the same grade of carbon as the Propel Advanced SL. The Van Rysel RCR Pro I'm referencing with Ultegra Di2 is still their top grade carbon and lighter than the regular RCR. Decathlon has it priced at about 5,500 Euros, or about $6,000 usd. Still $2,000 cheapers than the Propel advanced pro (Heavier than the Advanced SL) with SRAM Force.

Because it's a black blue color it's a sky team color. Because it's a blue white jersey it's israel tech team. Because it's have a drop seatstay it's a tarmac sl7. Content writers no longer have the creativity to review bicycles from Van Rysel. maybe if there's is a new bike brand in the market have a wheel they will say it's look like a tarmac sl8

It is not a budget bike. Common makers e.g. Specialized, Cannondales price tag is literally gone mad.

What happened to the initial bike they teased, matte Black, kitted in Force AXS, tan walls & a rumoured £4.5k price tag?! That showed promise of Affordable super bike!

This is the AG2R team bike with full sponsor equipment. They will have various price specs when they sell of course.

Missed My point chap/chappette I’m well aware what this is, the one they originally teased is the real affordable super bike at €4800 not this at £8500, it’s practically the same bike.

you mean sram rival? that’s still an available model. idk what “initial bike tease” you’re thinking of with sram because ag2r just went from campy to shimano

Looks boring and was expecting a lot more for the price. Sorry but I'd rather get a Canyon with some resell value and market in the future. Van Rysel has no brand image that people will be willing to pay for in the future.

The brown shorts were so good. Disc brakes are still cringe. Another mass produced carbon frame with a cliché silhouette. Cringe. Internal cables. Cringe. This bike would look decent with rim brakes and a custom paint job.

€8500 is only the consumer configuration. No 3D-printed saddle, ZIPP wheels, no integrated handlebar. Not more attractive than US brands.

People confuse "cheap" and "a lot of money", well let's say a Ferrari for 10 grand, that's still a lot of money, but that's cheap. Same here, as cheap is relative, for a insanely engineered product like this with all those great specs, 8k5 is cheap but remains to be a lot of money for many.

By ‘insanely engineered’ did you mean choosing an open mold carbon frame from a Chinese manufacturer?
