Frankly, the endless repairs and frustration have put me off going cruising. I once thought it sounded grand, but I don't WANT to spend my days in "exotic places doing boat repairs." Like most people, I am not nearly as knowledgeable as Keith about all of the boats systems, and it would be constant stress to have things break like this.

I built my rudders from billet aluminum, they are a two piece design and the two halves bolt together and sandwich the rudder shaft. I machined each half from 1"-1/2 aluminum plate and each side is hollowed with reinforcement ribs remaining. I designed them so they can easily be replaced in the water.

Make-sure, you have a very sturdy heavy duty battery isolation /trip switch connected to your lithium battery bank .As friends of ours a few month’s ago, sailing in the Caribbean had a direct ‘ lighting strike hit ‘on the aluminium mast which completely jumped the isolation/trip switch .Hence totally burnt out ALL the electronics on board Minstrel Dancer.

Any one who has binged all the Zatara videos beginning to this one as I have has got to be stunned by the vast amount of maintenance and repairs necessary on a "yacht". And these folks are transparent on regular expenses of floating, but when it comes to the massive amount of repairs and parts replacements, that transparency disappears. in the last 3 months it has to be in the 10s of thousands of dollars and they're not done yet. Don't let them fool you into thinking this is equivalent to repairs on a land home. Impossible. The oceans are relentlessly hostile to human habitation. And without a resident full-time engineer like Keith, this boat wouldn't have made it out of the Greek port where he bought it. All I'm saying is don't buy the line that this life is cheap or luxuriously easy. Binge and draw your own conclusions.

When Finn leaves that is all your babies gone. Big symbolic empty nest. And the boat ... is feeling the parents resistance in this transition ... and the pain of the transition. And the boat is just reflecting back your pain (dear parents) and then tries to help you by delaying the inevitable. Lovely Boat Spirit being there to hold you pain ... in a big symbolic hurt and pain to so many boat parts. All symbolic of course.

Overhauling a boat is a lot like overhauling an airplane. Many parts are merely inspected, cleaned, lubricated and returned to service. Some parts, however, are always replaced, usually long before they wear out, because failure of the part (control surfaces, control cables, control pullies, control cams, rigging, sheets (lines), sails...) can result in catastrophic failure of the vessel. I just replaced my emergency brake cable and the engine's serpentine belt for that very reason. You never wait for failure.

If you can get a hold of a two-piece of metal sheet big enough to sandwich the rudder (to keep rubber together) and nuts/bolts the sandwich metal sheets end together. If no problem place two screws into the rudder to prevent the two metal sheets from falling down off the rubber. After the dry dock, you can keep the sheet metal for the future in case it happens again similar to this.

Hang in there Sailors 🙏 For those who've never been on the water, you've gotta understand that multiple issues like this occurring at the same time are compounded at least by the power of 2x when compared to these kind of issues with cars, trucks etc on land due to the fact that EVERYTHING is much more complex, expensive & just plain harder to fix on a boat at sea when these issues arise. There are so many factors that creep into the equation while attempting to solve these problems such as weather, sea-state, tides, currents, parts availablity, workers with sound marine experience for fibreglassing etc, etc, etc. Plus the price usually starts at double compared to work being done on your car at a garage. You need a good, calm, intelligent, experienced captain with a good amount of common sense to make the crucial decisions or things can go really, really bad, really, really quickly. Keith displays all the needed requirements & then some for these situations with his no-nonse, bullshit-free approach while keeping his cool all the while & throwing in that much needed sense of humour here & there which in turn keeps the whole crew's stress levels & anxieties in check, this factor alone makes a HUGE difference to the final outcome, believe me! Good luck guys, I know by the end of the next episode your issues will be all or mostly sorted due to your cleverness & amazing amount of experience you all have. Stay Safe ♥️ Steve from Australia 🇦🇺🇺🇲

Hey guys… right where you all were at looking at the rudder. I was there in 2020 swimming with the turtles ❤️. Stayed one night on the island spent 11 days in Porto Rico. Enjoy your videos…. Always impressed with Keith’s ability to address all of the issues objectively that you all face on your adventures. From Oklahoma USA 🇺🇸 ❤️

After us just cruising for the last 6 months I have a similar list for a haul out in the near future. On our last crossing from the Bahamas thankfully at the very end, the auto pilot gave out but before that the main black water macerator pump started leaking internally. Dealt with sewer smells until we could get to a spot with a store to buy Pine Sol and a new pump. Ugh. Always something. Now the diver has shown me that somewhere along the last 400 miles I hit something on both props. Time for them to be pulled. Add to the list a new water maker and time for oils, filters, impellers, racors and all the normal stuff. All part of the fun!

Necessity is the mother of invention. Perhaps Keith could use his experiences and vast knowledge to invent a universal temporary rudder repair kit. Two sides and some type of clamps to hold them together or maybe just a roll of Gorilla tape. Good luck guys.
