I don't think Cal touched Nate for a few reasons, but especially because of a scene in 1x05. This is when Nate is under investigation for choking Maddy. In the scene Cal invites a guy over to his motel room, but when he gets there Cal doesn't want to do anything sexual with him, and just wants someone to talk to. In the conversation he says that he tried his whole life to keep that part of himself separate, and thought he was doing the best thing for everybody, but when he looks at his boys he can see soo much anger and rage. When he is saying this he genuinely seems baffled as to how they turned out that way. If he had actually touched Nate I doubt he would be questioning what went wrong because he would know that he traumatised him in one of the worst ways possible.

Yea I don’t think cal touched him sexually. Tbh I think the scene is just the torture Nate feels from knowing that his dad is into men and also the fact that he likes Jules and she also fell victim into cal’s recordings. Pretty sure he’s extra disturbed from watching the person he liked be touched like that by the person he hates the most. It’s basically etched into his brain, and so the entire scene is him struggling with the people he loves and hates.

Another thing about the Maddy and Cassie scene is it sounds like (to me) that Maddy isn’t blaming Cassie but she’s actually heartbroken because she thinks Nate is going to hurt Cassie. I think the wording is very specific, “He put me through hell and now he’s dating my best friend”. She didn’t say “He put me through hell and now YOU’RE dating him”. She put everything on what Nate has done and is doing. She thinks he’s going to put Cassie through hell also and that makes this even more heartbreaking. From what the show has given to us, cal didn't know that nate knew anything about his double life. I'm talking about accountability, obviously cal is not blameless, he shouldn't have been cheating and making those tapes in the first place. He had no one to help him cope with it, as fas as we have seen no one even knew about it. He dealt with it all these years with 0 help. Episode 7 is CLEAR proof of that with the nightmare scene. Colloquial basically
@user-lh4ft6xo4g2 жыл бұрын
@@BexsBoxofConfusion yeah it’s just semantics, but the “pedo” title is questionable but cal is still responsible for multiple statutory rapes basically because he didn’t bother to check ids. it’s hard for me to explain things but i think that people on the tapes aren’t victims of “disney villain bad guy” cal. they are victims of themselves and kind of society since it’s quite a huge tendency among lqbtq+ teenagers to seek validation and attention in these precarious sexual interactions.
@BexsBoxofConfusion2 жыл бұрын
@@user-lh4ft6xo4g you can see them as victims of both, because it’s a bit victim blame-y to say someone wasn’t SA’d because of a very black and white definition of SA, especially when the situation is multilayered. Cal deliberately sought out people who look very young, and engages in very violent sex without checking boundaries or consent when going from one thing to another. I can say this as a teen who was hyper-sexual as a result of trauma and ended up being SA’d multiple times as a result: just because a teen is “acting out” doesn’t mean it’s okay for an adult to take advantage of that, and that consent is a continuous process with multiple facets that may not be codified into law, and thus violating/ignoring/not getting consent (etc) is not criminal, but is still SA and will still result in trauma for the victim. And the person is still a victim even if it is not described as unlawful. It’s also victim-blamey to say that someone who is behaving recklessly, especially someone who is legally a child (a minor), or college-aged, cannot be a victim of SA because they put themselves in a place where they can be taken advantage of. Using my own experience as an example, I did place myself in situations where I was more likely to be taken advantage of, but at the end of the day it’s the people who decided to abuse me and my vulnerability who were the predators. It is predatory, and a facet of being an abuser, to find vulnerable people who are more likely to fall into their trap.

Around 14:53 I think you’re right on the money, Trin! I believe Cal being on top of Nate is meant to symbolize a direct contradiction to Rues narration for Nate in episode 6. He thinks after being in an endless “dick swinging contest” with his dad, he has finally won since his dad left, and in the messiest most undignified manner. But he hasn’t won, because the trauma still has a hold on him. I think cutting from Maddy, Jules, Cassie, then to Nate and his dad shows that Nate has not overcome his trauma from his father, because he’s repeating his behavior. The way he treats the women in his life is a reflection of Cals secret life and his sex tapes. Also in all three of his relationships, Nate has been the “dominant” one. Not just in means of sex, but he demands control. He manipulated, controlled, gaslit, and blackmailed these women, giving him power over them. It could be his way of maintaining some semblance of power and control in his life, because throughout his life, Cal is the one who has the power, even when he is no longer in his life. It could also be a representation of Nates internalized homophobia. He knows his fathers sexuality, and as we saw in season 1, Nate tried his hardest to repress his own homosexuality. I think because of how he views his father, he sees his homosexuality in turn as something that is morally wrong or disgusting. That could be another explanation for why he treats women the way he does. Trying too hard to prove his straightness and masculinity. So Cal being on top of him could possibly also be representative of how Nate has become homophobic of himself due to the trauma his father gave him, and how he (blames?) his father for it. He doesn’t want to be like him, In any way shape or form. But unfortunately he is, a lot! Both his treatment of women and the inner desires he tries to hide are things he loathes his father for, but are behaviors and thoughts he himself has. Both of these things have to due with sex and sexuality, so I think that’s why the sexual imagery was used. It’s gross, yes. But it’s accurate. (Sorry if this sounds jumbled😅 I’m kind of spit balling here a bit and typing this on my phone)

TL; DR: Big text about how Nate doesn't need to be SA-ed to be traumatized by his dad. Cal never touched Nate, but the fact that he was so young when he found the tapes (I personally think his mother said he darkened after 8 or 9 years old because she couldn't remember his actual age when that happened) and the guy was calling his dad "Daddy" in the tapes left him scarred. What Nate probably understood of that at that age was "Oh, he's doing this to these guys because he wants to do it TO ME, the one that calls him dad" and he probably internalized that and is scared of that idea to this day. Being exposed so young to something so sexual can leave bad impressions on you, especially if the things portrayed are understood as "wrong" at that moment (in Nate's case, being gay and cheating would probably be the "wrong" things he considered at that age and his role model was both of those), even if they don't necessarily traumatize you or are even seen as traumatic to most.

14:58 I think that signifies him still not recovering with his trauma from when he was a child. When he found one of his fathers tapes in which the guy he was with called Cal "daddy". Regardless, a great scene depicting a deeply entrenched trauma

Look I've been saying this EVERYWHERE, but ethan would've 100% down to roleplay in bed the way kat likes but she chose not to communicate instead lol
@levineer5242 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is clear that Ethan's behavior isn't the problem. In fact, the juxtaposition of the way Ethan is confidently playing all of these emotionally vulnerable rolls and how Kat has retreated to being anonymous behind a screen really shows the viewer how Kat is uncomfortable, scared, and doesn't know what she wants in all areas of her life. Obvs we stan Ethan but I like that the show did erase all of Kat's inner issues when they were dating because so much media pretends that everything will be all better once you find the right person to love you.

I think Lexi and fez just connected, I don’t think they have the same problem at all.. two totally different characters even tho they had the same dad, Lexi has always been more self aware and conscious of the matter
@katylynelizabeth24682 жыл бұрын
I didn’t think Cal SAed him I thought it was supposed to represent his dad literally F***ing him. Because he is the way he is because of his dad. Also because he saw that tape he’s now apart of it. Hopefully that makes sense ✨

the way i literally immediately compared sex education and the holding out for a hero scene. glad to see we're on the same wavelength trin lol

15:05 I think them showing nate feeling trapped by his dad is two fold. One in that he probably feels trapped as a child having known that his dad was doing this and still living his life normally, but also two that Cal could have this small sense of freedom. In that Cal was having sex w whoever he wanted but Nate was not free to love someone like Jules due to his own internalized issues with his masculinity or otherwise.
