Jack Hargreaves said on Old Country that this cart was "probably the finest gypsy flat cart in the country" and it came up for sale at an auction in Reading along with some other very interesting carts and wagons. The video looks back at Jack Hargreaves visit to John Pickett who made the cart in Wiltshire for Sean Martin.
Also in the video I look at a rare poultry and game cart along with two beautifulGypsy wagons that also were for sale.
If you would like to learn more about Jack Hargreaves and both Out of Town and Old Country please visit daveknowles.net/jacks-country/ .

Back in 1983 I produced and edited a series with Jack Hargreaves for Channel 4 called Old Country. In one of the programmes Jack went to look at a flat cart being built by the well known wagon builder John Pickett. The cart which Jack described as "the finest flat cart in England" came up for sale late last year at Reading and I went along to have a look and make a film on the sale.

Used to watch Jack's programs with dad when I was a kid, they don't make tele worth watching nowadays. Sad really, a lot of knowledge and folk lore of those shows and their like will be lost to the next generations.👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇯🇪

My old Dad was a cart painter he died in 1997. when he was young he worked for a firm in Chippenham Wiltshire known as Humphreys coachbuilders and painters. fancy lines painted on with a feather and a dolly stick. world war two that all ended sadly to say.

It is so sad craftsmen like your father are no longer around. I am always on the look out for the sort of people Jack met and many sadly no longer exist and their craftsmanship has not been carried on to the younger generations.

Thank you so much for keeping Jack Hargreaves alive and fresh in my mind. My father didn’t watch Television except for Panorama, early TV programmes like Hans and Lottie Hass and David Attenborough wildlife programmes, the news and later Southern news on ITV, Jack Hargreaves shows, originally the fishing programme and then ‘Out of Town ‘ and finally ‘Old Country’.. My father lived and worked in Poole Harbour all his life, save a spell in the Navy in the last war. He was a hunting, shooting and fishing man, but when he was appointed the 1st National Trust Head Warden on Brownsea Island in 1961, because of the influence of Helen Brotherton and his position as Head Warden, he gave up punt gunning. Your programmes are bringing back happy memories and much pleasure Dave, many , many thanks.

Thank you. Does anyone remember John Braybon (Jack) who was involved with making "Out of Town" and OU programmes? He flew tugs and gliders for the Royal Naval flying club and played clarinet in my dads band (the late David Pope). I'd love to see the episode where Jack Hargreaves tested the Pilot Jack 17' cathedral hulled fishing boat off The Needles.

@@DaveKnowlesFilmmaker Would be nice if you could take some of the makers children to it to see if they remember and can tell you anything about it being made. I am sure they have a lot of memories that should be recorded so they are not lost to time, would also be interesting to see if any of them followed on and still make wagons. A lot of the traditional ways have been lost and it is films like Jacks and your that are the only way we will remember them

Hi Dave. Nice to see that cart is still around and found a new appreciative owner. It's so nice when it's possible to find such items that Jack brought to our attention all those years ago. As a huge fan of Out of Town I was amazed to learn I had missed all of your Old Country programs with Jack so bought the DVD set as soon as you made them available. Looking forward to receiving Simon's new set covering some of the restored OOT programs from Jack's film collection.

A beautiful thing. Likely not appreciated now, but the time, effort and skill that went into making this are clear when you see it. If I won the lottery I’d try to revive some of these old skills. Pay people so they could spend the years learning. The kind of thing some university or colleges should do instead of social studies and diversity courses.
