Oh boy.....buckle up for this one! Are the last Bond movies of each actor their worst? Being James Bond and I explore this theory and evaluate whether A View To A Kill is a thrill or a pill...

I remember reading a fanfic version of what a Dalton AVTAK would look like back in 2004ish and loved it! Zorin and Mayday would’ve made terrific villains for Dalton and the fight/action scenes would’ve been more serious and intense

For me one of the best Bond films, lots of action and car chases, one of the best bad guys (if not the best), terrific soundtrack, nice locations, gorgeous Bond girl Tanya Roberts (Rest In Peace)... Yes, Roger was a bit old but Connery wasn't either a boy in his last Bond movie.

It's like a serious action film with some VERY random campy cheese sprinkled throughout. How many times did you hear Roger's recycled "AAAHHHHOOOOOHHHHHH"? 1.Eiffel Tower scene 2. Horse race 3. Fire truck chase 4. Hitting his package on the antenna 5. About to fall off the Golden Gate Bridge Did I miss any?

I absolutely adore A View to a Kill (my first Bond theatrical experience) but I can flow with the rip session because your banter is just so damn hilarious. I wear the film's "cheap 80's-ness" like a warm blanket. But in retaliation, I have to state that Tanya Roberts has the sexiest voice of all Bond girls, so there! :)

Yeah the “cheap” 80s look gives the movie a charming vibe that I like. Zorin and Mayday were quintessential 80s yuppie villains, the electric guitar added to Barry’s (terrific) score, Grace Jones’ hair and fashions and much more make this a nice time capsule

Normally a Bond actors last Bondfilm isn´t their best but A View To A Kill sure isn´t Roger Moores worst movie. Its underrated as hell. The plot, the casting, the score, the song, the villain is better than Octopussy and Moonraker. The primary flaw in this film is Roger Moores age. Had they had a younger Bond and had they cut some of the silliest interludes such as the California Girls song, they´d have had a pretty good film and the villain would have made a bigger impact. I gotta give some credit to the script and the story. The whole Microchip-thing is pretty cool and holds up pretty well. Also Zorins substory with him being a steroid child was pretty cool. I really liked Tania Roberts as Stacey. Her character makes so much sense to the story. She is obviously not the best Bondgirl but she makes a lot more sense to the story than Jinx or Holly Goodhead

Walken’s blond hair and many of his mannerisms stem from the fact that David Bowie was originally approached for the role of Zorin, but turned it down. The writer and director still had Bowie in mind when making the film.

A View To A Kill is great fun when I saw it in the cinema first time that musical surf joke got a big laugh from the audience. The only thing that spoilt it for me first time watching was Rogers facelift. Rather than following the plot I was following the facelift and wondering what he'd had done. The more times I've seen it the less distracting it is. Life would be poorer without this film so glad it was made. Roger Moore is my Bond.

You two couldn’t be moore wrong about this one. AVTAK is why I’m a Bond fan. It was my first bond movie I watched and I have been hooked ever since. I understand the campy elements of the films aren’t your favorite parts but for me it’s what I love. The Beach Boys song coming on tells me not to take the film so serious and just have a good time. Even if you hate the music choice the snowboard scene, action, and stunt work still outstanding. Can understand not loving Tanya Roberts. I think she’s great and smoking hot in the roll. Doesn’t annoy me at all. Grace Jones is gorgeous and amazing in the film. I agree with on Walken. It’s pretty much a goldfinger remake and I prefer this over goldfinger any day. I think Roger movies got better and better as they go. He doesn’t have a bad bond film in my opinion. He can’t be to old to be bond if it’s supposed to the man in Dr.No continuity wise. I saw this first when I 12 years old and every one looked old to me so that never bother me. I guess I still see the film through me 12 year old eyes.

AVTAK was my first time seeing a Bond movie in the theater when I was 10. It was a late Christmas Eve showing as my uncle (ex-uncle now) and cousins were going to midnight mass and we needed to do something to keep everyone awake, so we went to the movies! I thoroughly enjoyed it and got me hooked into Bond. Come 1987 and The Living Daylights I was right there in line opening weekend.

Good appraisal guys and I agree with all of what you said. I do have a soft spot for Sir Roger Moore and A View to Kill. I think like you guys that the film makers should have played more to Roger's age and made the Bond girls Bond women rather than go for just really pretty girls. The comedic scenes are too much I agree. Christopher Walken is very convincing as the Phcycopatic Zorrin. Not the best but I do have a soft spot for it. Cheers Guys.👍🇬🇧

Everyone always harps on about the Beach Boys soundtrack during the snowboard sequence. But how is this any different than the Tarzan yell in Octopussy, the "I'll buy you a delicatessen in stainless steel" comment in FYEO, the slide whistle over the barrel roll in TMWTGG, and so on and so forth? I think its a bit biased. I absolutely love the opening sequence. It's cool as F and Barry's soundtrack with those guitar sounds is cool aF too. Not to mention Duran Duran's theme song which is one of the best. I have no problem with the older aristocratic gentleman spy that Moore plays. He suits it well. And I'm currently half the age he was in AVTAK. The real issue I have with AVTAK is how underused Walken and Grace Jones are. The fact they were both genetic experiments by the Nazis should have been part of the plot. Walekn should have been more unhinged like he clearly wants to be and Jones should be kicking ass a hell of a lot more.

It's better than Diamonds are Forever. The theme song is one of the best (and definitely the best of the 80s themes), the Eiffel Tower sequence was quite good, it feels like a Bond movie in its style and pacing, I like the pairing of Moore and Macnee, Grace Jones is iconic, and I like that he bothers to have an alter ego rather than flouncing around under the nose of the bad guy announcing himself as James Bond (when in the era of computers, baddies could find out who James Bond is easily). The main issue with it is that Moore and the other cast members were too old by then, which puts everything into a sedate and unbelievable space (On Golden Pond rather than Goldeneye if you will). The Bond girl being a damsel in distress which was a strange move for a mid-80s film, but I feel that it was done to accentuate how powerful and masculine Grace Jones's character was. You are right about the Murder She Wrote feel in some scenes, but again, I feel that goes with the American setting of the story. Overall, I think it's okay. It's not great, but it's not the worst. Die Another Day or Diamonds Are Forever for example are just crappy by comparison.

Years later Roger himself said he felt too old for playing Bond. He had decided to stop doing Bond movies after 'For your eyes only'. The producers had cast James Brolin for 'Octopussy'. Then it was announced that Connery was coming back in 'Never say never again'. So Cubby persuaded Moore to return because the producers, quite rightly, thought it was the wrong time to introduce a new Bond actor who had to compete against the original Bond Sean Connery. And, as a Moore fan, I agree that AVTAK is his most boring Bond.

I think Stadler and Waldorf got it wrong in their review. Bond films are subjective. In all honesty there is a little bit of everything in this one to keep ppl interested. Yes Roger is 57, big deal, Stallone,Ford in their 70's still doing action. A View to a kill is very underrated. Admittedly it has always been my favorite closely followed by For your eyes only. You have the best Bond, best villain,Hench woman, storyline is interesting. I don't fault Tanya Roberts, the whole damsel in distress act was popular in the 80's look at Kate Kapshaw in Temple of Doom, Stacy Sutton is better, and pretty. This one also has by far the best soundtrack despite the beach boys bit in the cold open. The whole Polayva Nova scene was actually supposed to have Ayna Amasova agent xxx from TSWLM, but Barbara Bach didn't do the cameo. There are a few flaws but if you look past them it is a entertaining film. For me Moore's films have always been my favorites with Moonraker being his weakest entry. To all fans of the series, don't take what I say or these guys, watch it for yourself and decide. You will enjoy it more than Spectre or the crappy Brosnan era. In terms of swan songs this one is good.

This one holds a special place in my heart because of the Eiffel Tower chase. I love going to Paris and I especially love the Eiffel Tower, so I give it a pass, most of the time. The reviews of Mr. Zaritsky and Mr. Darlington are hugely enjoyable to me. I tend to agree with Darlington on most of his views, but as a lifelong Bond fan- films and novels- I must respectfully disagree with him in my view of A View to a Kill. I don't think it's Moore's finest hour (I give that distinction to Octopussy, with FYEO a close runner up), but I feel it has a kind of magic that stands the test of time. Yes, Roger is looking his age, but I still think he looks good as a rugged, veteran agent of MI6. Zorin's chateau sequence is one of my favorites in the entire franchise. The Barry score, integrated w Duran Duran's knockout title song, gives the film a beauty and gravitas that most reviewers overlook. Mayday belongs in the pantheon of henchmen alongside Oddjob and Jaws. Walken as Zorin is one of my favorite all time villains. This was also the first Bond film I saw in a theater, and I was actually in France in the summer of '84 when it was filmed, so for me there is a layer of personal nostalgia that will never be broken. Excellent fashion on Bond, from his tuxedos to his track suit for night stealth to his horse racing attire. Tanya Roberts gets a lot of flack but I actually enjoy her in the part. She's so extremely gorgeous that it completes the Bond fantasy to a tee... at least for me

Great Bond! Like DAF, I love AVTAK too! Those movies are both like time travel to 1971's Las Vegas and 1985's San Francisco! And it's good to see more mature Bond actors, they are both still charming men! *** And WTF problem you guys have with the young Bond girls, I don't understand... Bond girls are always ca. 15 years younger than Bond. Well, this time maybe a bit more, 28 years(Tanya Roberts). But where's the problem? In real life, sometimes we can see even bigger difference... And nobody wants to watch older Bond girls, I mean older than Bond himself. It only happened once, in 1964: Honor Blackman was five years older than Sean Connery. Personally, I(47) like younger women(ca. 25) and I think that's OK! And Bond, since he's a real alpha male, must be with younger, sexually attractive women! Don't you agree?

If we had to pick one image from a view to a kill to sum it up , it would be the hippodrome scene where you see centuries old actors in front of you dressed like it's 1900. If you put Roger Moore's age aside, it's a classic adventure with probably cheap action sequences but not awful either . Positive : Soundtrack (minus beach boys) , Walken, Moore-Mcnee alchemy , the Chateau scenes and the action sequence in Paris. It's difficult to decide if it's the worst Roger Moore's, there is a match with Moonraker for me (for all its silliness) .

A View to a Kill: Is it Moore's Worst? Short answer, yes...Long Answer, Oh, HELL YES! It had some good things in it(Using a car tire to breathe underwater was genius and John Barry is always a win for the soundtrack), but almost everything else was unbelievable or a wasted effort. Christopher Walken should have been a great villain(couldn't take him seriously as a villain or a psychopath-which is amazing as his career is built on those kind of roles). Grace Jones should've been a great femme fatale henchwoman(She didn't pull it off). Stacey Sutton was a 3 way tie with Christmas Jones and Jinx for worst Bond Girl ever. All the stunts were a Looney Tunes spectacle. The product placement for The Sharper Image was bizarre...I mean, didn't Q equip Bond? Over half his gadgets were all Sharper Image products!

Watching “ A View To A Kill” and seeing Rodger Moore R.I.P. hitting on an actress young enough to be his daughter is creepy. The plot of the movie is stealing from Superman (1978) Lex Luthor’s plan to flood part of California with a missile targeting the San Andreas falt to trigger a major earthquake and Zorrin’s plan to have a bomb planted along the San Andreas falt to flood part of California but for a different reason are so similar that it’s just lazy writing. If Octopussy had been Rodger Moore’s last Bond movie that movie would have been a better send off instead A View to a Kill is so bad that Rodger Moore’s Bond went off with a thud rather than a bang.

Moore wanted to leave a couple of times but everytime they tried to replace him something went wrong. Famously Pierce Brosnan was all set to go and then NBC renewed Remington Steele for another season. He knew he was past his prime when he was being paired up with Tanya Roberts whose mother was younger than him!'

To assume that a 26 year old female operative couldn't be attracted to a good looking mid 50s super spy is naive. It might be slightly jarring, but why is it creepy?

Why is it creepy. Well the same way it was creepy when Celine Dion married a guy old enough to be her father. I also think that it’s hypocritical because if this had not been a Bond movie and the gender roles reversed an actress in her 50’s hitting on a guy in his 20’s people would make a big deal about it.

All the comments about Moore being too old, are simply made by self-appointed film critics who wish to look as though they know what they're talking about, by pointing to something which is merely notionally plausible. Moore looked basically the same as he always did. Mick Jagger is now 79 and I don't see anyone complaining he's too old when he's jumping around on stage. Goodness me .... 57 is nothing. Tom Cruise is 60. Stallone was 59 when he did his last Rocky film. Moore could have done another 2 Bond films and been quite the package.

Agree with you guys on what you said. Definitely agree with you on Tanya Roberts. She's gorgeous but the acting was awful. The other thing with Roger Moore is he had just had plastic surgery before this movie and it showed. The poor guy could barely emote throughout the film! And that "California Girls" moment is extremely cringey.

I think its unfair to say stacy is the worst bond girl. Just watched again and at the end fight she pretty much is responsible for saving bonds arse. She attacks zorin making the blimp crash into the Bridge, cracks scarpine witht the fire extinguisher and even has.another go at Zorin when hes trying to hit bond with the axe. Considering shes meant to be a civilian and not a spy pretty ballsy. More useful than some other bond girls and doesnt come across as forced.

A View to a Kill gets unfairly maligned. There are some very good things about this film. It has THE best Bond theme song with Duran Duran. Christopher Walken and Grace Jones are really cool villains and steal the show. Patrick Macnee is great as Bond's side-kick - my only regret is he's killed off too soon. I think this movie has one of John Barry's best Bond scores. It has great locations: Paris and San Francisco. I really like that Bond is under-cover during the horse stable sequence - for once Bond is being a spy again. If David Bowie (as was originally planned) had starred as Zorin, this would have been a really cool movie. And as for Roger Moore being "too old" by 1985, audiences then weren't as conditioned to youth-obsessed culture of today where everyone is a perfect twenty-something pretty boy or girl, and it wasn't as cringy to pair an older man with a younger woman then. I actually think For Your Eyes Only is Roger Moore's worst, and campiest, movie as Bond.

@@randallrutherford1384 For me, For Your Eyes feels like a made-for-TV movie. I absolutely hate the background score. The Sheena Easton theme song is terribly dated. The villains are generic, nonthreatening and boring. Even the setting, in Greece, is underwhelming. The Bond girl has absolutely no chemistry with Roger Moore. The figure-skating girl acts like she's eleven years old. The "fight" with the hockey players feels like something out of a Bug Bunny cartoon. The "sacrificial lamb" character of Luigi is completely forgettable (I always forget he's even in this film). Even the Q scene with the banana nose is cheesy and the jokes don't land. The only really great scene in Eyes is the rock-climbing scene. The action is all sub-par. The opening sequence with Blofeld is simply ridiculously campy. I just think Eyes is easily Moore's weakest entry as Bond. I'll always think that.

If Moore had quit after Octopussy there is a chance David Warbeck would have become Bond. Unless Dalton was available. Don't think Brosnan was on the radar in 1983. Warbeck says Cubby Brocoli had him as his immediate replacement if Moore suddenly quit. But by 86 Warbeck was told he was now too old! Warbeck is in an episode of Minder - 'Second Hand Pose' . Certainly very Roger esq.

Moore's heart really doesn't feel in it either [his autobiography states that he didn't get on with Grace Jones or Tanya Roberts which can't have helped]. I feel [like Connery with Diamonds] that Moore and Walken's salaries sucked up a lot of the budget as it feels quite cheap.

I used to think this was Moore’s worst. But I just watched it back to back with Octopussy and Octopussy is worse thanks to it’s juggling of three antagonists and the convoluted plot and the gorilla costume. Compare that to the straight-forward mission here. AVTAK has a great villain in a young Christopher Walken, Grace Jones is iconic, and Tanya Roberts is beautiful. The climax at the GGB is better than palace scene in Octopussy. Peter Macnee’s character is fun, and the rock salt shotgun was funny. Point to point from Iceland (Siberia) to Paris to San Francisco is a better travelogue than Cuba (I guess?) and East Germany and a three ring circus with a bunch of sad abused elephants (you can see it in their eyes). Tanya Roberts is not as bad an actress as I remember; she’s much better than Christmas Jones in TWINE.

A View To A Kill is bad, but Moonraker is worse. It's probably my own bias, but to me the mid-80s kitschy bad is more forgivable than the late-70s post-Star Wars kitschy bad -- it's like the plot of AVTAK is more Bond-y in nature and fits with its time better when action movies had just started to shift à la Terminator etc but most action movies were really cheesy whereas with Moonraker they were treading into a different genre that other films were doing so much better and so when it trips it faceplants.

I think AVTAK is better than TMWTGG tbh. It’s far from perfect but it had some really good parts as well. Zorin and Mayday are some of the most entertaining villains in the series, the score is terrific, the villain’s plot has high stakes, there’s some impressive action sequences (like the Golden Gate Bridge climax) and more. I’d be more likely to casually watch this on a Saturday afternoon than TMWTGG (which to me comes off as boring and cheap looking)

And to develop this point further, if they couldn't get Joan Collins, they could have got the lady who played Sue Ellen in Dallas, or Stephanie Beacham from Dynasty. There were actually a lot of well-known beautiful mature women from US soaps at that time who would have worked really nicely as Stacey Sutton.

I love Sir Roger Moore. He will always be MY James Bond. However.. some of the choices they made here are baffling. He beds more women (four) than in any other of his Bond films and they all look noticeably younger. The fight scenes are atrocious. Look at how well his fight scenes are edited in Octopussy compared to this one. The stunt doubles are so pronounced. John Glen really disappoints. I do agree with Joe though that Moore's incomparable charm does shine through despite it all and Walken is just awesome. I think I slightly prefer this to TMWTGG.

To me there's no question that Moonraker is the worst Moore film. It's an unpleasant, uneven farce along the lines of the appalling intro to View to a Kill. But after that VTAK is all good, and excellent in the Moore-McPhee exchanges. Unlike every other Bond movie (OHMSS and Casino excepted), this movie has two, yes two, moments of real emotional impact, the Butler's death and the death of May Day. Both are well-earned. Bond under water, breathing the car tyre's air, is super-smart.

I think the bleached blonde hair on Walken was based on the fact that they were trying to get Bowie or Sting for the role of Max Zorin. Both were smart enough to avoid this! It's a terrible movie. I'm an American, yet Bond films set in America always feel cheaper to me! Walken is great, Grace Jones was inspired casting, Patrick Macnee; wonderful, the Duran Duran song is very good, Barry's score is excellent as usual, and Roger was the Bond of my youth, so I adore Roger Moore, but this was a mess, and Tanya Roberts was not only a bad actor, she also looked like an 80's porn star. She drags this whole movie down SO many points it's not recoverable. And, yes, it looks like an episode of "Murder She Wrote"!

I am not sure how A View To A Kill would have been with Timothy Dalton, it was a weak movie, the worst Bond film in my opinion. Duran Duran`s song is the best part of the movie and saved it for what it is wofth. Good discussion, you two crack me up on this one.
