All is quiet on the Bond movie front, but does that mean that the franchise is dead, dormant, or done? In this video I discuss my point of view on the state on the world of 007 and provide a perspective based on experience and evidence. Additionally, I provide a few TIPS on how we might navigate this James Bond drought and perhaps even thrive in the shadow of the void of movie NEWS...
_________________________________________________________________________________
When David is not running an advertising and marketing company, his hobby is The Bond Experience which is primarily a video blog where he discusses Bond experiences and the people and brands that help to create those experiences...
The mantra of living like Bond, one moment at a time emanates from a concept of experiencing the joy of collecting small moments in life that add up to amazing journeys and stories....whether it's through style, locations, literature, fitness, and the movies themselves the world of Bond is explored through its people and their stories.
Ultimately though, The Bond Experience channel is a celebration of the James Bond franchise and the many people that form a true community. Our core mission is to create a strong connection in the Bond community amongst all the fans, regardless of interest or demographic.

I don't understand why both producers can't let Bond go and find a new way forward. Especially Barbara Broccoli seems to be making very odd decisions (or not doing anything at all). I do hope that they find Bond proper new 'management' - thankfully the company is under Amazon and not Disney.

They need to find another John Glen and give him a 3-4 film contract. They need to make the films about Bond and his missions and not Bond and his emotional problems.
@stuffedsheepshead
@stuffedsheepshead Ай бұрын
This is exactly what they should do, but they won't. Exploring Bond's emotional life, even though it was handled with almost no nuance for the most part, has gotten EON showered with accolades throughout Craig's tenure. Barbara successfully broke free from her father's image of pumping out 'disposable' popcorn entertainment, and successfully made a name for herself in the industry for eschewing what came before. I wholeheartedly believe EON deem making 'classic' style Bond films beneath them now - they got a taste of rightfully earned critical praise with Casino, but this led to 15+ years of misplaced smugness; the wheels gradually falling off with each successive awful creative decision sanctioned. Now, I don't think they see a path forward. They made Blofeld his brother, they made him resign every film, they made him fall deeply in love twice in less than a ten year period, they made him a daddy, then they killed him. What the hell else is there to delve into? The only logical decision is to return to making actual Bond films, not this embarrassing car crash of a $300+ million dollar soap opera. But how can they when it's granted them such status among their industry peers? So they're stuck between what they perceive to be a rock and a hard place, even though the 'rock' in question is Cubby and Harry's legacy, aka the dependable bedrock that was 1962-2002.

I agree about the missions being important to refreshing the franchise. Perhaps it's a bit formulaic at this point, but they should consider Martin Campbell for the comeback film with a new bond since he's so good at doing it.

@@stuffedsheepshead I agree completely with this. I think they were even surprised themselves at the massive success of Skyfall - the only Bond to make over billion dollars by a considerable margin. With Spectre and NTTD, they have been trying to chase that success by cherry picking a part of Skyfall (its emotion) and turning it up to 11 at the expense of some of the core aspects of the Bond franchise. Before Craig, and probably even before Skyfall, the idea of making Blofeld part of Bond's family or killing Bond would have been laughed out of the writers' room. I look at something like GoldenEye as a good balance of emotion (Bond being hurt by Alec's betrayal), or of course Bond's revenge in LTK.

Bond isn't played out. The Broccoli family is played out. They misconstrue their creative limitations as a limitation of the property. There is life in Bond, but they can't see it. They need to surrender the property to fresh talent and stop trying to control it. But Barbara Broccoli has another agenda. First she stomped the franchise to death and if she ever brings it back it will be to twist him into something more grotesque than Daniel Craig. Bond is dead because that dreadful family will never let go of him.

Simple no cost 18:52 solution: Go to your library and read the books. Start with Fleming and then read the various authorized stories through Kim Sherwood’s pair (so far). Plenty of adventures, insights and time well spent. After that, read the various Fleming biographies and then the various histories of Assault Unit 30. By that time, if you are done, then fair well and good luck. But, by the time you have finished the new Bond movie will be out there. Please read!

I've heard that Higson's latest is equally as bad - portraying some badly written Nigel Farage analogue as the evil baddie as if "ooh the far-right bogey-men are the real problem with the world today". No thanks. I downloaded Raymond Benson's Zero Minus Ten from Audible instead and I'm quite enjoying it so far.

A few viewpoints on James Bond literary and cinematic, past, present and future. They are great Bond adventures. Quite a few of the continuation novel authors are active on social media. Raymond Benson, Jeffery Deaver Anthony Horowitz and Kim Sherwood are just a few who have liked and interacted with fans. There are also several Bond alumni in general who have liked my social media posts. I recommend the Dynamite Comics run. The authors also interact with Bond fans. Hang in there fans, the memories are always there, and more of the people are lovely. For future Literary Bond adventures, I was thinking of Charles Cumming and Charlotte Philby. Both are thriller writers, with a bit of spy influence. Fleming wrote Bond as a modern day character, IFP should stick to that for now. A modern day spinoff I would like to see are for certain villains: Blofeld and Irma Bunt, Goldfinger and Oddjob, Alec Trevelyan and Francisco Scaramanga. They could all have interesting backstories set in the modern day BEFORE they meet James Bond. The only 2 negative things that I will say about EON's future with Bond is that Purvis and Wade should be done writing. Great ideas men, but it's simply time for a change. Even Richard Maibaum took breaks! And sadly bashed 2 of the 3 movies he didn't work on. Also, no actor should ever again get the amount of creative control that Craig had. He was like a spoiled brat at times. It always seemed Barbara Broccoli bowed down to him, (and never to Brosnan). If her dad could have given Connery even half of that, he might have played Bond longer. On the postive side, Gregg Wilson (MGW's son) has become more active in producing. He could take over his dad's job one day, with his aunt. Plus, if Amazon is helping with the budgets, more movies could be made more quickly. They want a return on their MGM investment, Bond will surely help with that! I'm very grateful to the James Bond fandom. However, we need to keep ourselves in check. We can disagree while being respectful to each other. That's one thing that Bond fandom has over other fandoms. I'm always interested in listening to others' James Bond opinions. Let's always be kind. We are one of the luckiest fandoms in the world. Let's always be appreciative of each other. Most franchises burn out. Bond hasn't, and probably never will at this point. It's because of respectful fans that this has happened. Please respect each other, it is shown. We are truly lucky.

" Cubby lived and breathed 007 and worked his socks off to deliver a film -a great film, every 2 or 3 years." - THIS ^^. This is the reason WHY Barbara Broccoli killed off the Bond franchise. BECAUSE in a deep-seated part of her psyche - going all the way back to the earliest memories of her childhood - she felt that her father loved the Bond franchise more than he loved her. So - subconsciously - she HATED the Bond franchise. She always has done. That's why she choose Daniel Craig - the one man in England who wanted to kill off James Bond - to be the lead actor when she finally had control of the franchise.

I think a solution is to maybe not spend ludicrous amount of money on a James Bond film. No Time to Die's production budget started at 250 million. GoldenEye's budget today would be roughly 127 million. The initial Connery films were small scale espionage adventures. Bond films should go back to that.
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja Ай бұрын
In fairness the Connery budgets were quite large by todays standards-the volcano set in 'You only live twice' cost the same as the entire budget of Dr No and that was only 5 years prior. Troubled productions certainly balloon the budget-Tomorrow Never Dies cost nearly double what Goldeneye did [$110 million compared to $60 million]. I'd guess Bond 26 will be cheaper mainly as it's probably a whole new cast but people will expect scale [Skyfall was mostly filmed in the UK [with the China scenes filmed there] but that skill had scope.

David, I'm positive about many things but not about EON Productions. Not anymore. You seem reluctant to realize that NTTD undermined the spirit of James Bond. That film alone destroyed his mojo. The Broccoli's think they did everything that could be done with the character [actually there is still plenty of creative directions and stories to tell about Bond, but it's the family that controls him that's played out, so they misconstrue their limitations as a limitation of the property]. So they spent the last five films deconstructing his masculinity until they killed him. To watch a mortally wounded Bond on his knees beg the villain for mercy is not something you can go back on. I have no faith in this family to bring James Bond back. If they bring him back it will be with some over-riding agenda that makes him no longer Bond. So long as that family controls Bond there is no positive solution.

There are so many filmmakers out there who would LOVE to get their hands on this franchise and The Producers really need to do the right thing- and let it go. Let it go to young fresh creators who love and care about James Bond. Creators who are still excited about the character and who cannot wait to create new adventures for him. They should think of Cubby Broccoli, Ian Fleming, the great history and legacy of the franchise... and most importantly-.the FANS. We have kept this franchise alive and thriving for over 6 DECADES. James Bond is still the greatest fictional character ever created and the best franchise in movie history. And he deserves to be treated much better than he is being treated right now. And honestly- we deserve to be treated better too. I just read they are doing a second season of the Bond game show on Amazon. I do think Star Wars is much less special for having frequent content rather than when it was the biggest franchise around because you only got a film every 3 years or so. Barbara B has worked on Bond since Octopussy and Micheal G. Wilson was involved in Goldfinger so they've spent most of there lives doing it. I prefer to focus on the positive and upbeat aspects of the Bond archetype - which were perfectly embodied by Sean Connery, Sir Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan. Pouty McPoutface was never Bond to me. I doubt EON will release another Bond film - I don't know what more Barbara Broccoli could do to indicate that she wants the Bond franchise to die. But like you said - instead of being negative about that - I turned it around and eliminated the problem by writing the most thrilling, visceral, sexy Bond-inspired story since Fleming himself instead. As a longtime Bond fan (since the early 1980s), I have been saying for years that Bond series is done. Not only have the producers seemingly lost interest in Bond, but the Fleming character really no longer fits the current zeitgeist. I refused to even watch NTTD in theaters as I could see that they were more interested in sacrificing this character instead of celebrating it. RIP Mr. Bond.

“No time to die” actually asked & answered it Saf-“ I want the world to evolve, yet you want it to stay the same, let’s face it, I’ve made you redundant “ Bond-“No. Not as long as there are men like you in the world” A Given the world current, we have a whole Host of villains to draw inspiration from, it just needs to capture the essence of the character against the villains of now. As far as a product line, I always thought someone like Hasbro or Valaverse could get the licensing and produce a 1/12 action figure line based off the entire series All the bonds various suits variants etc, their villians, the Bond girls, some of the vehicles etc. GI Joe classified, Action force, Indiana jones, ghost busters, the MCU, Star Wars. There is a market for it, Valaverse made an exclusive that is a strong nod to Craig in Casino royale from the Africa chase scene. I don’t believe 007 is played out, why? Brosnan surrounded himself with 'strong woman' too-Natalia, Wai Lin and Elektra king certainly hold there own against him as characters [and Jinx does in the action department even if she's not well written]. I don't think any Bond actor put in as much work behind the scenes as Craig did [as shown by the many injuries he sustained]. The only way that 'cliff hanger' would work if Craig played the part rather than an actor the audience has no connection too [and so it doesn't feel too 'Bourne Identity'] and you'd still have Madeline and Mathilde present [as unlike Kissy Suzuki in the novels, the MI6 team know who they are]. A hard reboot is a much easier sell.

I agree with the comments here about the producers. We are now 5 years since the production end of NTTD & no new film in sight. The issue is NTTD. They don’t know what to do after that ending & they should have realised that. DC went on 2 films too many & it’s that unknown of whether he was coming back that has affected the franchise. Solution is easy. You give a Tom Hardy a 2 picture deal with option of a 3rd & go back to basics Fun , swagger , good villains & decent title song. If we can’t have Nolan then get him to produce & write with his brother. With Tom you can have a bit of fun - go to a Brosnan type formula - whilst the next stage is considered. He’s bankable plus he’s telling us he wants it with the tux in the latest venom trailer 😅 Also. Bring back David Arnold.

I truly don’t think it’s “played out”. One of the great strengths of Bond is that, he can be endlessly reinterpreted to be a reflection of the age he finds himself in at the time. I remember when the Cold War ended and many film critics said that Bond was now irrelevant because, if the Soviet Union was gone, what purpose does Bond serve in a post Cold War era? Well, then the War on Terror arrived and Craig’s Bond became VERY relevant. As long as Bond acknowledges that time he finds himself in and yet still retains the qualities that has served him well for over 5 decades, he’ll be just fine.

I'm not going to deny that the hiatus EON is taking isn't frustrating as a fan but there's a whole other side of the coin is that the literary side of Bond is thriving at the moment, we're in the middle of Kim Sherwood's Double O trilogy, Garth Ennis's comic run is about to conclude and the paperback of On His Majesty's Secret Service has just come out. So yeah the films get all the attention and there is a symbiotic relationship between EON and IFP but it shows that Bond as a character is far from being dead. And in another 10 years the books at least will be the public domain and they already are in Japan for example, the all-female cast Casino Royale musical is a very creative take on the source material 🐬But I think Bond like Sherlock Holmes (who was also killed and came back) has endured and will endure because he's is endlessly adaptable and without wanting to sound too pretentious he's a modern hero.
@jerrymanas671
@jerrymanas671 Ай бұрын
I dont think it's dead, but it needs new blood. I'm not a fan of the current writers. Casino Royale worked because it was mostly based on Fleming's book. Everything since has been convoluted, dark, and melodramatic, with only occasional moments of Bond-like levity. They squeezed the fun out of Bond. So I hope the winds change with the next installment for the better, but I feel it'll only happen with new writers (or if they base the story on one of the books). I have little faith in the current writers. Hopefully, a new director will come along who shares this vision and brings a new story. I hate to say it, but with Craig's behind-the-scenes influence out of the picture, i think that will only help.

Perhaps NTTD was a dream and they could follow the example “Dallas” did with bringing Bobby back to life. NTTD really did a disservice to the franchise. The plot was similar to what was really going on in the world and they kill of Bond? What a mistake. At a time when the world needed a hero they killed him. Even in a normal time killing of Bond was a mistake. Bond needs to be big. Villians need to be big and their plans need to be big. Bond was fantasy and while the Craig films were good and more gritty, the fantasy was gone. Maybe I’m wrong but the fantasy needs to come back. Godzilla has been around for what 70 years and “Minus One” took the world by storm and ended up Toho’s most successful film. So Bond isn’t played out, but needs the ingredients again that made it big in the first place. While Craig’s Bond films were good, they were like all other action films today. Bond always stood out and needs to again.

Yep - that's how it goes in my head canon - NTTD was a dream. So was Spectre and the whole "Brofeld" nonsense. Indeed so was most of Skyfall with all its nonsense plotholes and melodramatic pretentiousness. In my head canon - Bond was shot by Eve Moneypenny off the top of a train at the start of Skyfall and the fall should have killed him but it didn't but he's been in a coma ever since having increasingly bizarre and ridiculous dreams - those being the plots of Skyfall, Spectre and NTTD. In Bond 26 he wakes up in hospital with Moneypenny and Tanner and Q and he's like "woah I had the most crazy dreams that M died and Blofield was my brother and Felix died and then I died some chick was 007 instead of me" and they're like "no James - don't be silly - that was all just a dream. You're still 007 and M's still alive and infact now you're awake you'd better come and report to her because she has a new mission for you" - cue the Bond theme music - DOONET DA DOO - DEE DOO DEE DOO - DA DA DOO!

After Dalton did his two Bond films ( The Living Daylights-1987/ License to Kill-1989) there was a 6 year gap until another Bond film resurfaced in 1995 with Bronson (Golden Eye). But I will say this, the challenge will be finding great writers/stories/directors/ performers, etc... in todays Industry? The talent is very slim now? Nobody is really creative or hungry like they use to be? Nobody wants to see recycled stories or remakes? That's what makes the earlier Bond films that more special and timeless! They never get old because they were so well put together? You can reboot it but then you cannot use any of the previous actors. You can revive him, he never died, but then that would be too much to bear, it is like calling the fans beyond stupid. You can restart everything from scratch with new actors but then now you know that James Bond can die anytime the producers run out of ideas and want something dramatic to make up for it. Really really the dumbest decision ever to kill Bond.

Yes. It is not possible to do this character justice in the current era of film making. The last film made Bond out to be a worthless has-been, dead beat father, who no one even remembered or cared about all the lives he has saved over the years. Male escapism is no longer valued and is actively being systematically torn down. I have never binge watched Bond movies and there are years between viewings for me. They don't get old for me because of this and as far as I'm concerned I am done and happy we have what we have.

Did you actually watch No Time to die or is this just going off the trailer? The character who's questioning his worth gains respect for him to the extent she's fighting alongside him at the end and gives him his number back. He's brought back into the fold by a man who greatly respects him-Felix- and his helped by his friends Q and Moneypenny. He dies a hero saving the day and the film ends with Madeline telling his story to his daughter, showing how much his exploits are going to go down in legend. The idea it made him out to be worthless is total nonsense. It's like taking the scene from 'Goldeneye' where M says Bond is a 'sexist misogynist dinosaur' in isolation and ignoring that Bond is not showing her any respect either but by the time of 'The world is not enough' they have strong mutual respect.

In one word: no. In a bit more depth: Like any media franchise, there are times when nothing happens, and times when everything happens. James Bond is an evergreen brand - even without a movie, even if people aren't talking about it, James Bond is an institution. There is enough James Bond already out there for people to enjoy, discover for the first time, and delve into. James Bond, like many other entertainment mythologies (Star Trek, Doctor Who, Marvel, Star Wars, DC...) - these aren't so much franchises anymore as they are institutions - even without any new 'content' out there, the depth of existing content is broad enough to keep fans coming back, and new fans to discover. For someone somewhere in the world, they are watching their very first James Bond Movie The good thing is, is that just like Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel, DC... it is because of just how much James Bond is this evergreen brand, that there will always be people who want to write a James Bond story, direct a James Bond production.

You are aware Fleming himself toyed with killing Bond off-'From Russia With Love' cliffhanger ending could have been Bond's death if Fleming hadn't been inspired to write more and Bond is missing, presumed dead at the end of 'You only live twice' [to the extent M in NTTD is quoting from Fleming's obituary] and it does feel that he might have added a 'sequel hook' as it feels like it could have ended with Bond retired. Besides, they deviated from his books from day one casting a working class Scottish actor for his upper class English hero. Bond is hardly the only franchise to kill it's lead off in recent years [even doing it in Logan hasn't stopped Hugh Jackman coming back for Deadpool 3].

It is while Babs continues to show no interest. She killed the goose which laid the golden egg. Time to sell the franchise to someone more interested and not a disinterested part time caretaker.

Faceless corporations live to destroy franchises tho. Amazon with lotr, Disney with everything else.

@@playedout148 Hard to argue that - especially seeing what Disney has done to Star Wars. But no question about it… for the good of the Franchise…. I still think they MUST sell. (Just not to Disney 😳😳!)

She's hardly 'part time' given she's worked on Bond since Octopussy 40 years ago and the last 3 films made a combined $2.6 billion dollars.

I don't think Bond is played out... but I do think NTTD really had a negative impact on me. Craig was my favorite Bond. Casino Royale and Skyfall are my top 2 films. But NTTD has even had a negative impact on those films. I've only watched NTTD once. I have no desire to rewatch it. To be honest, I haven't watched a Craig film since 2021. It had that big of a negative effect on me. Waiting 6 years for that terrible ending more than pissed me off. I know I'll be extremely excited for Bond 26, but for now... Bond is dead.

I've been a Bond fan - an expert on books as well as the films but as crazy as it seems if I was told that there would be no more I wouldn't be sad. Once they allowed DC to have h8m killed off that did it for me as apart from a couple of short stories no original source material is left. Icannot see how the franchise can move forward. It was an excellent run and I could be wrong but RIP.
