Yakushima is a roughly circular island located in the northern part of the Satsuma Islands, and most of the island is made up of mountainous granite with Cretaceous layers running through it. Mt. Miyanoura (1933m) in the center is the highest peak in Kyushu, and Mt. Yaedake is the collective name for a group of high peaks. The climate varies from the subtropical oceanic coast to the snowy inland mountain peaks. Precipitation is high, reaching about 4,000 mm per year in the lowlands and 10,000 mm in the producing areas. At an altitude of 1,000m to 1,500m, the area is covered with a virgin Yakusugi forest (a World Heritage Site and a Special Natural Monument), and there are giant trees that are 1,000 to 3,000 years old. Most of the wood is produced in national forests and is shipped from Miyanoura and Abura Port. Wild deer and monkeys inhabit the forest area, and sweet potatoes, sugarcane, and ponkan are cultivated in the narrow terraced fields along the coast.

Before the merger of towns and villages, Awa was the central village of southern Yakushima (Shimoyaku), which corresponds to the former Yaku Town. The town once prospered as a shipping port for timber for Shimoyaku Forestry, and a trolley track railway was built between it and other villages such as Kosugidani, which was built in the mountains and served as a base for the forestry industry. Part of the trolley track still remains. Once Yakushima became a World Natural Heritage Site, many tourists began to visit the island, and many inns were built there as mountain climbing bases, and the island is still thriving today.
Kurio Nakama
The villages of mountainous Yakushima are all located on the outer coastline and none are located inland. The cities that can be called cities are Miyanoura and Awa, both of which are ports where Yakusugi is produced, and surprisingly they are farming and fishing villages. The village of Kuryu, located on the southern coast of the island, is a good natural port, and during the Edo period the Tsuguchi guard station was located there to manage the port, and the catch of bonito was large. The village has a unique structure, with a main street running parallel to the Kuryu River that flows into the port, and five streets perpendicular to it that run into the Kuryu River, with private houses lining these streets. Although there are few private houses that can be judged to be old at first glance, the stone walls, hedges, and wooden walls unique to an island rich in forest resources create a village landscape.
