Please note! The start time for this ride is now variable depending on the time of year and temperature. If you'd like to join us, please contact me here or check the group's Facebook page for the current start time.
Back in the 1990's, I turned up a bike-themed photo album out at Denio's swap meet in Roseville, CA. The album was assembled by a fellow who referred to himself as "Gorham" in the album, a cyclist who was an active part of the Sacramento cycling scene in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The photos in the album depict early club rides in the area, as well as several early, pioneering, local bike shops. Today, Rich and I ride with the Camellia City Vintage Lightweight Cycling Club in search of one of those store locations to see what's there now. If you're ever in the Sacramento area and you'd like to join the club for a ride, regular rides are on the third Saturday of each month and leave from the parking lot just across from the Gold River Starbucks, in Gold River Town Center, 2095 Golden Centre Ln, Gold River, CA 95670. Rides typically roll out at 10am, but check with me to confirm ride times or check the club's Facebook page here:

These old bicycle designs should be replicated and electrified. There would be a resurgence in popularity.🚲

The bike shop near our house closed down during Covid and replaced twice with different bike shops. We haven’t made it to the second shop yet but glad to still have a local bike shop. So cool to see the old photos from that bike shop. I couldn’t imagine trying to ride the double decker bike, definitely for the younger crowd. Thanks for sharing!

I wonder if they ever got that double decker bike into riding condition, Dan. I'll keep my eyes open- It may yet turn up at a local flea market! :)

What a wonderful concept and a beautiful ride with friends.I’m returning back to New England in 10 days after four months in Florida and I think I will organize a similar event on Cape Cod as we have many small town, very old bike shops. Btw….l love the vintage jersey……did you ever get enough folks together to order the one you showed months ago? I’m still interested.

Hey, Mark! Time to leave Florida already? It’s still plenty cold here in NorCal, but I have high hopes for next month. Still not enough folks to drop the price on the jerseys, but hope springs eternal!

@@bikestrikesrazors I had a great winter here. Weather was warm and perfect but zero rain. Drought conditions. Golf courses dried out. Great riding weather but very boring terrain . Nowhere near as pretty as up North . Had to watch out for all of the iguanas on trails. They are everywhere. Real pests and no fun when you hit one of those dense buggers at 15-20 mph. It will still be chilly at home up North but much nicer riding back with my buddies! Thanks for your great videos.

That was "M" street in East Sacramento, near CSUS.

@@bikestrikesrazors Thank you for answering my question. It seems the neighborhood becomes much nicer as you progress away from CSUS (at least from the Google Maps street view images). Thanks again.

@@4acesjackdaniels775 Even though I've lived in the Sacramento area forever, I never really had a reason to go to those residential neighborhoods in that area, so I'm not very familiar with them.

Could I join if my bike is not a "racing" bike? Just a 70s mid to low level road bike. Nothing fancy but certainly "vintage."

Absolutely! We're not bike elitists here. All vintage bikes are welcome, and if you don't have a vintage bike but you still have an appreciation for classic and vintage, you're still welcome to come along and ride whatever you have. Check out the Camellia City Vintage Lightweight Cycling Club page on Facebook for ride dates, times and updates!

Hey, A! Saddle height has changed over the years. Back in the very early days of cycling, you'd be likely to see a saddle almost touching the top tube. Most of the riders in the video are riding bikes from the 1980's, where the style rule for saddle height was to have around a fist-full of seatpost showing, much less seatpost than you'd see on a typical modern bike. Of course, even in the 1980's, this varied widely based on rider preference. Modern bikes also have a sloping top tube which tends to make the already long seat posts even longer. Of course, there are always exceptions- I have a small, vintage 3Rensho that I have set up with a modern race fit- lots of seatpost showing and a big drop from the saddle to the bars, and it's a heck of a lot of fun to ride like that. I also have a photo of a couple of riders in the very early 1900's with huge amounts of seatpost and a big saddle to bar drop. Guess there were even aggressive racer dudes back in 1909! :)
