I've visited this factory before, without even realising! For a brief (and dark) period of my life I was a car salesman, for a car dealership in Wilmslow not far from there. All our new cars would get dropped off in a big carpark next to a factory in Mobberley, and we'd regularly have to go and collect them and drive them back to the dealership - this was the first journey any of those cars had taken on public roads, so that was pretty cool. Anyway turns out that factory was the one in this video - all this time I've been shooting Ilford film, I had no idea it was produced there! Mobberley is basically a small village, and the factory is bigger than the village itself. There's a fantastic bakery and Chinese chippy that we would visit regularly. That car salesman job was terrible for my heart health, both because of the ginormous amount of greasy food I consumed and how incredibly fucking stressful it was. Anyway, great video!

Excellent video. That factory must have had a lot more occupants in the boom years. It's not just analogue cameras that are getting old but also the machines that make the film. A fascinating insight.

I was kind of thinking the same thing, especially when seeing the more abandoned areas, like the lunch/cafeteria, etc. It's interesting, the decor seems like it was frozen int he late 50's early 60's maybe? That really added to the interesting effect....
@johndewhirst3089

@@chilecayenne My guess would be the 70s and at the time a lot of money sunk into the place. The shots of the offices were brilliant both in terms of the light as well as the industrial history. Hate to think about the cost and viability of replacing some of that machinery though let alone whether it could be done. It really underlines the importance of the Phoenix project to succeed and how deserving it is of support. I've ordered my film, just disappointed that the light is disappointing at this time of year in northern England!

Really interesting video, gives you a really good perspective on how film is made. All those people who keep moaning about the cost of film going up really need to watch this because it's no easy thing to just increase production to meet high demand when you have all those different stages as well as machinery & trained staff to consider.

to get closer to 38 frames on a 120 roll you need to load the camera with an empty roll of paper and crank to frame 1. open the back and see how far past the tape line it advances the film, if there is space for a frame that the camera skipped you can avoid rolling to ‘start’ when you load a roll of film and get an extra frame.

One of the best videos ever! So wonderful to see Ilford in action. Totally engrossing. No one better, than Grainydays and friend! Your images were superb. So nice ! I can't imagine the folks at K, giving such access. I love Ilford Film! and chemicals! Tri-X was my standard for generations! Yes! Then it changed, thinner base, curls like it's possessed. So quietly I left and went to Ilford. The new Phoenix film needs time! I posted an opinion on another site, that angered a lot! I was right! Lack of orange base, causes odd colors. But early days. Viva Ilford and Grainydays.

The whole video in BW fits pretty well with Ilford. I'm just wondering now what lighting they used when showing the emulsion and coating in the lab. Did you shoot under safelight and your camera picked it up so well that I can't tell from the BW conversion or was it just for show under normal lighting? Your pancake and syrup analogy was spot on :D Possible small error: 20:24: I suppose the base rolls aren't made of gelatin but PET or acetate. At least that's what film base is normally made out of.
