Guys, I'm Brazilian and I love football, or soccer. It's a sport that unites the world. My English may have been lacking, but would I have heard that talent for talent the US team is superior to the Colombian team? After that rout? In my limited knowledge of football, this generation is no better than the one from 2002 to 2014. That generation of players from the USA was much better than this one and opened the doors to Europe for this generation. If they play in Europe today they owe it to the generation that opened the doors for them but they are no better. Saying that they are the best blinds them to limitations and this is the result. I think this American team will have a hard time beating Bolivia. Win without putting on a show! I've seen the same thing happen in Brazil where the press overestimates players. This also causes problems in the field

This argument fails to account for the manifest fact that for the first time ever, dozens of US players are playing and starting for teams in Top Five leagues and even in the Champions League. That has never been true before, not anywhere near current numbers. As others have said, you seriously underestimate the toxic effect of managing top players with soft, weak, MLS-tier coaches.

The result wasn’t surprising at all. This is what happens when USSF prioritizes playing the overwhelmingly majority of men’s national team matches at home against CONCACAF opponents. Likewise, the team isn’t even good on the road in CONCACAF. The end result is the US Men have a highly inflated FIFA ranking that got exposed big time yesterday against Colombia. The US has a long way to go to be even seen as competitive with other nations. Out of all the 6 confederation cups, the top three are UEFA, CONMBOL, CAF. Even the AFC is better than Concacaf. OFC and Concacaf are the weakest. Other confederations cups such as the Euros, Copa , and Afcon, the quality is so much better in those tournaments. In Afcon all the top teams got eliminated, Afcon is so unpredictable that it forces you to play at a hard level with many different nations. In Concacaf all you play is Canada, Mexico and other caribbean islands that are not good. Until Canada, Mexico and the US can play other nations more frequently, to learn and adapt, you guys will never compete.

Comes in wed to an ineffective "system" unprepared mentally and tactically for individual opponents and fails to make in game adjustments. They barely get by, struggle on the road vs. far inferior, much less talented bottom feeder CONCACAF opponents. As a Colombian-American, it’s a bittersweet feeling to watch this result unfold. The biggest difference between the two teams is that in the USA people love watch “football, basketball, etc” and then “Futbol- soccer”. In Colombia they live and breath “futbol-soccer” from the moment they’re born, then other sports. The local games are always packed and full of passionate fans which creates a level of faithfulness and love for the game that can’t be practiced even with the best coaches. So what the USA really needs in order to compete with South America and Europe is to breed a culture of players and fans that truly love and most importantly play the game from a young age in order to not just play well, but live the game through passion, loyalty and pride to play for the national team.

I am from Argentina I watched and played football my whole life. I want USNMT to succeed! My take on this is that the USA finally has competitive-level players. I watched the game against Colombia. From my perspective, it was clear that there were coaching issues. The way the defense is organized, and most of all the tactical proposal by the coach is horrible. He Is not minimally harnessing the talent of their players. Just hire an Argentinean coach as most of the Copa America teams, or an European Coach.

Can't blame the players. With Puli playing anything other than 9, with us using a non-scoring, hold-up target forward game plan, we simply will never get goals in open play, and we will ALWAYS get shelled at the back because the other team can set a VERY high defensive line. They will never develop a winning spirit and confidence, especially with them knowing what they COULD do when a guy like Callahan lets them play the way they are capable. There is no tweak, pep talk or player selection that will get results outside of this particular CONCACAF pool with Gregg's non-scoring 9 philosophy. Which COULD work if we used a 3-5-2 or straight 4-4-2. It's trash with a 3-man attack. Mids will always be over-whelmed, and defense will ALWAYS be flooded with shots on goal and multiple late runners in Gregg's game.

A lot of the goals could have been prevented if the defensive line made smarter choices instead of being greedy and trying to run forward themselves. One goal could even have been prevented with communication if the teammate would have just told the other player that an opposing player was coming in behind him. Could have ended at a 2-1 loss if those last 3 goals weren’t gifted from dumb mistakes.
