You also have to point it at the sky for a few seconds before you aim it at the target, i forgot why but i saw that during a training video i think it helps it clear the computer before locking something

As with the Redeye system, aircraft identification and range ring profile to judge range play an important role in a successful interception. Making a mistake with either either means a miss or the destruction of a friendly aircraft. As a former MANPADs crewman for over 6 years with both Redeye and Stinger systems, I was kind of cringing that this video went into as much detail as it did in the operation of these systems. MANPADs have always been desired by terrorist groups for obvious reasons.

Stupid question, if the missile ever misses will it attempt to retry or does it self detonate? Also if it runs out of propellant, what safety measures (if any) for those circumstances are there? Thanks.

@@youtubzer it deosnt retry because it doesn't know where to look for the plane again. Also it can't really tell from other planes once loses its lock. So it detonates shortly after. Once the fuel runs out, the missile still moves for quite some time due to kinetik energy. Once its speed drops below a setpoint, it self detonates.

Actually, the seeker is not physically/statically locked, it is simply an electronic signal that disengages the seeker tracking loop so the operator doesn't have to fight with the seeker trying to lock on anything in sight when targeting. The seeker assembly cannot move without the air bearings being powered by the argon gas, and thus during transport their movement is not a concern.

Actually, the correct word is 'reticle' (as spelled at 9:44), not reticule. However, he neither pronounced 'reticle' nor 'reticule'. He pronounced it as re-tackle (9:44)

The missile goes where the seeker is looking and does correct. It may not turn 90° but it does track and correct enough to hit target. The seeker locks on to the IR of the aircraft and follows it to impact.

Does this all have to happen within the 45 seconds?

No, there are several Missile Approach Warning Systems that are able to detect infrared guided missiles. It's also wrong that a stinger always comes from the ground 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@bollewillem1 the AH-64 Apache, or the or the OH-58 Kiowa for example. Even drones like the MQ-1 Predator are able to use it. A missile approach warning system can for example detect heat radiation or radar echo of the missile. Even UV sensors can and are used for detection. This technology is of course highly sophisticated and expensive and not used by everybody but it's far from impossible.

Future? There are things called EMP, hacking and jamming that will prevent such drones to work properly as well. Sure, it's great tech and it has its uses, but don't exclude fighters, bombers or multirole aircraft or armored vehicles. They will always have a role and be useful.

Training plus 45 seconds is a LONG time when you see an aircraft incoming.

The IFF does not identify foes, it only identifies friendly forces with its transponder on. It sends an interrogating signal, it then does 1 of three things. The aircraft transponder will receive the signal and send back the correct response. The IFF on the Stinger will then send the message of positive friendly to the gunner. If the transponder sends back the incorrect response, the IFF will let the firer know with a "possible friendly" beep/vibration. This happens when the transponder, or the IFF of the Stinger, has the incorrect or out of date crypto installed. If no signal is returned, the "unknown" response is given to the Stinger gunner. The IFF doesn't know what a foe is, it could be a mountain, a tank, or an enemy aircraft, it has no idea because no response to the interrogate signal was received. That can mean a friendly aircraft with the transponder turned off or malfunctioning can be in the sights of the Stinger. If I remember correctly from my training on stingers, the crypto is good for 3 days. I was in the US Army and my first job was a 14R M6 Bradley Linebacker Crewmember. Its a Bradley Fighting Vehicle that replaces the TOW launcher with a Stinger launcher. The vehicle and job were eliminated around 2004-2005. I'm not sure how much info I can go into about the crypto for the Stinger, so that is all I know I can give. We had to get Secret Security clearances to operate the Stinger.

So something like the stinger requires changing the codes every three days? I mean its ok if it was just the stringer, but having to change the crypto codes in every aircraft etc.... This is serious maintenance workload that I did not it existed in the air force (and potentially other vehicles). 2. If the second mode of the stinger is "possibly friendly" even when an incorrect code was given, can't that be exploited by the attacker? Just send in incorrect response (but mimicking the signal that the interrogator sends) - perhaps same modulation, or frequency.... If this is the case, how isn't the second mode of the stinger easily spoofed? 3. My third question is unrelated to the communication, but the actual firing. Is Line of Sight required in order to do the firing? Or you can just scan the skies with the stinger and let the radar detect a potential aircraft? We see so many videos of aircraft launching rockets to the ground, and they are so high that cannot be seen from the ground. Are these targets for the stinger? What about situations where you can hear the aircraft, but human eyes are unable to see it? Can the stinger handle these cases as well?

@@nickst2797 The 3 days is my memory, and maybe wrong. We changed our radios once a week. I always figured 3 days is for the benefit for gunners on the ground, who probably won't be in constant contact to get the correct fill everyday. Most aircraft will have to land everyday, and making sure the correct codes are filled just seemed like regular pre-flight checklist. The enemy needs to know what a close response could be, and I don't know the technical aspects of the code. It may reject everything that isn't a certain number of bits. But those are just what I figure and probably aren't correct. I just shot the thing, a higher pay grade would fill it. The Stinger requires a line of sight to get a lock. The M6 Bradley Linebacker did have slew to cue capability to link with the radar systems (the name is escaping me right now, we never used it anyhow. The MOS that ran the system were 14J). This allowed the M6 to track the target even if it wasn't in its LOS, but allowed it to be on target for when it was in its LOS to quickly allow the Stinger to lock on target. We were told that if the target is too small to see, its too far to be attacked. The unclassified range was 3km. It was meant to be used against rotary wing aircraft mostly, but also low flying and slow aircraft like the Frogfoot and North Korea would use cheap prop planes for deploying paratroopers.

@@natsune09 Remember your COMSEC/OPSEC Back last century our unit changed the codes daily and only the ground crew could do that. Only military/government aircraft will have the IFF mode on their transponders so therefore the correct/incorrect response rather than no response.
