You know what may become an issue in the future? When the US/West invades another country, i.e. engages in a conflict somewhere, you can bet, that the Russians will supply those fighting against them with stingers, javelins and what not. That will cause an unspeakable amount of suffering and destruction/death among our troops! I don't know if we ever thought about that, but it will most definitely happen! We can see through the conflicts in Yemen, Afghanistan, and Iraq that the Western equipment is not invincible, to the contrary, it gets destroyed. No matter what system, even the Abrams get easily busted in Yemen! There is nothing we can do about it, but to take the casualties and fight through a devastating war… A war that could be much easier to handle, if the enemy would not have the ability to get supplied by the Russians… I am not saying that we ought not supply Ukraine with arms, I don't know what the right decision is, but I wish that we at least have a conversation about it.

I was looking for the cost. Thanks. And damn, that's really not a bad cost at all, considering. It's affordable enough to train soldiers on how to use them. They sell themselves to countries that want to buy them, although I'm sure we give them away plenty cuz Murica. And they're seemingly pretty reliable. Small enough to transport a few in your car. Light enough for females to operate. While $38k is affordable for what the weapon does/can do, I'm realizing who really wins the war. Raytheon, plane makers and others in their position

The way it launches, is the reason it can't be (easily) used against heat producing, ground targets. When it's pushed out of the tube, before the rocket motor ignites, it drops about 2 meters. If it's being held level vs upward, the missile impacts the ground. Now, if one were standing on the edge of a flat roof, say two stories up....

@ddegn
@ddegn 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ryan_Christopher The coolant is argon. The heat was removed when the argon was initially compressed. When compressed gasses are released, the gases can absorb heat. Scuba tanks and other compressed gas cylinders get cold when the pressure is released. The heat produced from the cartridges is a separate process. It's using some sort of "thermal battery" which uses a chemical reaction to produce a lot of power at once.

Yes it can be reloaded. It comes as a reusable launcher and disposable "missile in a tube". You jettison the spent missile tube and lock a new one in place and can shoot again. The seeker in the missile has to be cooled so you also have to replace the single use battery cooling unit. It supplies all the power and cooling gas in a single one shot cartridge. Once you cool the seeker you need to replace the battery cooling unit even if you don't fire.

The Stinger is remarkably inexpensive at $38K per shot, when compared with the Javelin though. Different tools for different problems; the Stinger won't penetrate the armor of modern tanks, and thus needs a shaped charge and higher velocity along with a more sophisticated fuse. It has a "pre-charge" to set off any reactive armor before the main charge goes off, thus defeating reactive armor.
