Views are my own, and not a reflection or representation of my hospital and program.
A week on clinic & a day of L&D! Then a fun didactics session learning about operative vaginal deliveries! Also, i'm still chronically exhausted and dislike how much time is spent documenting lol

Suggestions: please try to include like your day to day “lifestyle” stuff, Rachel, coz I do like to see what a residents life is like outside of just medical related things. So I really like it when you show making your coffee including what you use to make it or what up offer you order if you go out to get it; where you like to go shopping (online or in store); when you’re cleaning; workouts; what you eat in a day, even your OOTD outside of the clinic. You’re so inspirational Rachel!

I think most of what you said are already part of what she does. These I feel are more filler clips than actual life. Why would you watch someone who is only brewing coffee for 10min? I feel like maybe if she meets up with residents who if by chance become friends, It'd be interesting to show us if the friend consents a for e.g. Q and A between them or something fun between workers. But, if that isn't possible I wouldn't mind it. I think understanding work is still more important than having friends. But, it would be nice to have a more balanced equilibrium.

I'm a clinical year PA student who works with residents often. I have so much respect for residents, and appreciate how much the residents I have been around have spent time teaching me. I'd love to see meal prep for breakfast/lunch, and then also what kinds of quick meals you make when you get home. I'm so tired after 12 hour shifts that I don't want to take the time to make a nutritious meal, so I'd love to see more of what you do.

I love your vlogs so much! I feel like you make the best residents vlogs right now. I love how you explain what you are learning, how you show the BTS (preparing for case, preparing for clinics etc). In the end I don't feel like it's that important to see you in the hospital. As a future/aspiring OBGYN it's so so helpful to see how you prepare and get to learn stuff as I watch you do them :) 90% of your life is work right now and that's ok. Better that than featuring 0 work and thus not showing the reality of your current life/situation. Good luck Dr S!

Great job ! You will do well because of your attitude - once the knowledge base is sound, the biggest hurdle is the workload, sleep deprivation and the hit it can all take on a life outside work- that’s where a good attitude and ability to laugh and smile come into play! Don’t lose that ! I know you’re not revealing much (don’t blame you ) are u in CA? No worries if you stay silent on that- I had to do the same years ago 💝👏🏼👏🏼

Documentation is more for making sure you accurately document what is going on with the patient. So if you are taking care of a patient who is a high risk OB patient it will help you later in. I track physician documentation. It takes time to get in to a groove with documentation. Pre-charting helps.

I am a premed with a few trainings in laboratories. And you don't want to know how many notes I voluntarily filled out at the blood bag unit I was training at. I went in there and saw a huge pile of over 300papers. I asked them what is that crap over there in the lab. They told me it is the vital signs notes before and after different forms of blood transfusions, and if you could help us fill it out that would be great. So, I did. The notes took me like 4h to fill all out. When I came back the next day, I saw a stack of 100 out of thin air. I admit I regret voluntarily helping out with note taking as that didn't really improve my learning, just really was boring, and probably decreased my grade since I spent less time questioning what's going on, and got a worse oral exam result than I should have. Sometimes being nice really isn't nice for you. 😢, but at least the workers are grateful that I stepped in to help. And screw the grades as long as I felt like I was doing something that was helpful over all.

Hiya Dr. Southard! Even though I delivered my babies in 2002 and 2004, my mild obsession with pregnancy continues. Did I buy Williams Obstetrics and read while pregnant? Of course. All that means is that I have many questions. How do you feel/tell the baby's position (externally) in the last weeks? How do you learn to do that--seems tough? Can you talk about how you learn to strip the membranes (I had this done and, wow, did it hurt!)? How do you estimate the baby's weight near the end of pregnancy (this estimate is what led to the aforementioned membrane stripping)? On the OB side, can you share how you decide which speculum tip to use for an exam? My daughter just had her first gyn exam a few weeks ago and they showed her the whole selection (she's pre-med, so she was thrilled with the equipment review). I wasn't aware there were different ones, so that would be interesting to know. I'll keep thinking about other questions but I, personally, would love to know more about how you learn to do the stuff you can't just read in a book. Loved the video of learning how to use the vacuum assist--and the head-only practice delivery! Hugs to you, sweet doctor superwoman.
