Vlog 71: The first week of school for the 18-19' school year is here! I'm excited to embark on another journey with a new group of students. I've started off the year with flexible seating, blended learning, student personalized learning, and standards-based grading (whew, that was a mouthful).
Subscribe (bit.ly/bwjsubsc...) and "Bond with James" so that you don't miss out on updates of my weekly High School Teacher Vlog series, A Week in the Life of a Teacher!

Additional insight:
This vlog starts on the first day of school and I cover what I did throughout the first week of school. I started the school year with flexible seating. For the most part it has gone well but it is different from what I'm used to because I normally sit students alphabetically so I can learn names. I wanted to implement flexible seating last school year but wasn't ready (because I hadn't thought it all the way through and I had a difficult time find flexible seating classroom examples at the high school level that were not English or history classrooms).
As stated earlier, I am also implementing a few other things starting on the first day of school, along with classroom routines and procedures, and will continue to reinforce those throughout the first week of school (i.e., personalized learning and blended learning). There were a few hiccups, but all-in-all, it was a great first week of school!

I wish you was my math teacher in high school. Because my teacher really didn't care enough. Just a check 💰for him

Sorry to learn about your situation. I try to make learning as engaging as possible. Sometimes I feel great about achieving this goal and other times I'm like...💆🏽‍♂️💆🏽‍♂️💆🏽‍♂️

Omg I'm in love with this channel! I teach at a bilingual school in Brazil and I will try to apply some of your approaches in my classes. Thanks for all the tips!

My capstone college professor used an old red toolbox for cell phones and the first day was hilarious to watch that thing rattle bc people forgot to put their phones on silent. I think keeping cell phones out of the classroom is great and best wishes to a great year, James!

Thank you, Cindy. Yea, I've already experienced this, but I started dancing to the beat the vibrating phone made in the wooden box. I got weird looks. The cell phone buzzing hasn't happened since, lol.

Soooo jealous of the flexible seating!!!! And you can choose your prep period?!?!?!?? What magical land do you work in? I have totally stolen your idea of the stations and flipping the class with videos. It also looks like u reduced "your area". Kudos to u, but I like my hiding spot. I may also steal the plastic sheets for collecting data at a station and then allow them to answer questions in the notebook. (Trying to reduce printing). And looove the idea of video portfolios and I will be stealing that as well. Wow this is a long comment. But I do have a question: how do you start them at a station? Trying to figure out how to have a "warm up" or something to start of the day but use my WHOLE room for stations. Ohhh and what do you use for recording and editing?

I'm still trying to figure it all out, lol. I've started with a list of groups and students were instructed how to read the rotation schedule. Other times I've taught the whole class and then put up the rotation list. I am actually going to try doing 15-minute personalized learning stations/warm-ups at the beginning of class starting the 3rd week of school. As for recording: I use Camtasia to edit the videos I record with my vlogging camera. If I'm doing a lecture video, I may use the webcam that is installed in my new work laptop.

Love the proactive, pre-assessment strategy. Also love the molecules on your board. Where did you get those? The discussion board and video activities are great ideas.

Thank you. I’ve had the molecules nearly 10 years now. I tried looking up the company last year but don’t think they are in business any longer (because I wanted to buy some this year for station activities).

I started using those dry erase pockets last year and they have been a paper saver. I want to add more learning activities/blended learning to my classes but I always feel like I need to "lecture" the content material. I also feel like when I learn about new technology I want to use it all, but get so overwhelmed. Any suggestions on where to start? I already do interactive notebooks but most of the materials I use are resources from our textbook or the internet.

I’m thinking of becoming a teacher in California but I’m just concerned about how much teachers earn per year.

What state are you in? If you don't mind me asking. With the new set up are you still doing interactive notebooks? Will you do an updated interactive notebook run through if you are?

Texas. I may create a video but that might have to wait until the summer. Right now, my videos are what I do each week. Thanks for asking!
