Are you a science teacher looking for ideas to organize and setup your science classroom? I provide a high school science classroom tour at the beginning of the school year. The video was shot three days into the 2018-2019 school year.

As stated in the video, my classroom is not 100% complete. However, similar to my other classroom tour videos, I wanted to give teachers ideas for their science classroom setup (or simply how to structure a classroom for other educators). Also, people asked me to do another classroom tour. :)
Faculty and students (current, former, and those not in my class) have shared positive opinions of my classroom. I wanted to implement flexible seating in my classroom last year and even had a Donor's Choose project funded. However, the timing wasn't right.
Fortunately, I was able to utilize the furniture I already had and implemented a few ideas to turn my flexible seating vision into a reality. Before coming back into the classroom in 2016, I had looked for science classrooms that had flexible seating environments, but I did not find any; and I often wondered how I would implement one. In the end, it all worked out, and I started off the first day of school with a flexible seating classroom environment.

LOL. 🤷‍♂️ I'm not sure if you've seen my Mental Health video. However, I'm also diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). While I've improved over the years, it still gets me from time to time. But your comment made me chuckle! #rofl 😂

I love the LED lights! This is a great video of how one can adapt a high school classroom to make learning fun and engaging! Just because someone teaches high school doesn't mean it has to be "boring." Thanks for the great share!

I agree. Actually, many former students asked me why I didn't set up my room like this for them because they "would have learned better." Other students that I don't know pop in and give positive feedback. Thanks for watching and the comment!

Yes! I was worried about the cluttered look that I've seen with some flexible seating environments. The room won't be static and will change based on need.

It is difficult to find examples of flexible seating for lab classrooms and secondary students. Thank you! I like the minimalist approach using cool colors for relaxation. The room is inviting and organized. I definitely will use some of your ideas in my lab room. Thank you for sharing.

I love your classroom! 😀 Very warm and inviting for your students. I have a lowered table in my classroom as well and my students LOVE it! 😀 They always ask me if they can sit at it.

I had students from two years ago stop by and that was exactly what they said to me (very warm, inviting, and home-like). Last year's students asked me why I didn't do this for them. :-/ However, I am glad I finally set it up.

James, awesome set up for the classroom. Love watching your videos and following your journey since you have come back to the classroom. Seems like you and I have similar taste for some interior classroom style. I’d like to know where and how you are able to get your plants held from the ceiling! I know I can get hooks at the hardware store, but any tips? Also tips from avoiding the fire Marshall from forcing us to take it down as it is a “fire hazard”?

Thank you. I purchased ceiling hangers from a hardware supply store. They were actually on clearance, and I was able to snag 5 bags for $1.30. The cashier did a double take when she rang me up. As far as your other question: Sorry, I have no advice for that.

Hahaha. Last year I couldn't tell if a student was on their phone or doing work if they were facing the back. Therefore, I got a little creative this year, lol. I still need to put them up though.

All the lights in my classrooms (16-17 through the present) were purchased at IKEA.

I believe I used a foam board (I can't remember the name of the material). However, I purchased them from Hobby Lobby and then built small boxes out of them. I'm sure you could cardboard or other material. My room can be humid at times. Therefore, I went for a more rigid material compared to cardboard. I hope this helps!

I am also a HS Science teacher and would LOVE to try this!! How many students do you have in your classes? Can you give me an idea of what you have the kids doing at each of the different areas of your room? Do they rotate through different stations or is everyone doing the same assignment just in different areas?

I generally have about 30 students. If I'm doing stations, I generally create 2 or 4 copies of that station and scatter them around the room so multiple students have access to the same station. I don't dictate a rotation pattern. I allow them to work at their own pace as long as they are aware of the completion deadline.

Does Texas require a Masters for secondary? I knew some states did but I guess I just wasn't aware of how many.

Hello, David. No, Texas does not require a Masters for secondary. I worked at the district level and then was an administrator prior to returning to the classroom in 2016-2017.

Good question. Where is the teacher desk? I dunno seems to creative to me, what's a sub to do? Where will they sit?

I didn't have a desk last year. It was the first thing I got rid of when I moved into this classroom at the end of the 2017 school year.The innovation station (cart with the red document camera) is where I'm usually stationed if I teach.

I never had one, lol (see the previous comment). I make the sub move around to monitor the students to ensure they complete what is expected of them. Of course, if the class size is small, the sub could always grab a student seat. However, the person just can't sit behind a desk the entire time.

It's been so long that I probably wouldn't remember. The paint was at Lowe's, some of the rainbow cart's were at Michael's, and you may have to clarify the other materials you're referring to.

I purchased the design off Etsy and had the images blown up into posters.

My district has a media center. We receive discounts and the center will mail it to the school once it’s complete. Although, the person was able to print and laminate my posters while I was doing some work there.

how does classroom management work in a space with flexible seating that is so large

To be honest, I really haven't had an issue with management. The only issue is that students tend to go to the same seats even when I tell them they can move around, lol.
