I just wanted to say (sorry if tmi) but I had an annual obgyn appointment recently, and the doctor was the most incredible one I’d ever had. She listened so well, and made me feel like I was in control the whole time. And I walked away thinking, I really think that this is exactly how Rachel will be. As a soon to be RN and as a patient myself it gives me such great hope for the future to see doctors and student doctors like you come into the field.

I'm a soon to be family physician and I wish there were more doctors like that in my field already! Can you elaborate on what your obgyn doc did to make you feel so comfortable and in control? I'd like to know to improve patient-care quality myself!

Long-time watcher, first-time commenter hehe. I wish Amboss had resources for nursing school! I'm not in med school, but watching you has given me so much motivation for school. And that hug you did in the video?! In tears. I needed that virtual hug. Best of luck to you, Rachel, it has been an absolute honor watching your journey in this crazy time and I am so stinkin' proud of you.

Do you ever deal with dreaded study anxiety? Like anticipation anxiety knowing you have to study for the next 3 hours? If so, how do you deal with it?
@ataulkarim8809
@ataulkarim8809 2 жыл бұрын
just don't think about the big picture. I myself couldn't study if I just keep thinking about 3hr goal. *Focus on little* and by that I mean just say to yourself that you gonna study for next 30 mins and will see what happens next. When 30mins over. Take a walk or just make tea and then sit and say I am gonna study next 30 mins and will see what happens next. Keep repeating this. Take 40mins break after 2hours
@kayyla5
@kayyla5 2 жыл бұрын
I deal with this too! Personally i slowly pace myself into studying especially after taking a break, it can be harder to get back into it. I just remind myself that whatever form of instant gratification I’m searching for isn’t going to matter an hour from now and i sometimes bribe myself to get to studying. I don’t study with music but if i feel like I don’t want to , i allow myself to listen to it for a while until my momentum starts snowballing and the turn it off, or having a snack next to me, i only snack during studying when I’m really not in the mood but guess what? it doesn’t matter if you’re in the mood or not, if i promised myself i would do it then i will do it. I rambled alot and I’m not as good at explaining things but hope this helps?

Are you able to make an in-depth video on how you can afford medical school without working, and what your expenses are? There are a lot of students on youtube who look like they live pretty lavishly considering how expensive the cost of rent is right now. I am low income with no parents for financial help and really want to be able to go to med school but live comfortably. I would really love this! Did you take out loans/grants? Thank you
@thomabow8949
@thomabow8949 2 жыл бұрын
So the vast majority of medical students across the lower and upper ends of socioeconomic status (you need to be very wealthy to bankroll medical school) finance their education usually entirely through federal loans. There are two loan types available for students - federal stafford, and federal grad plus. Stafford loans come usually with a lower interest rate, and a lot of undergraduate degrees rely on these loans. However, there is an "aggregate cap" for this loan type, I believe it's around $50,000 for undergraduates, perhaps for medical students, but I was recently told it's $100,000. Grad plus loans come with a higher interest rate (6-8%) and usually require a co-signer (don't quote me on this part). These have no aggregate cap and are used to finance the rest of the education. Other loan types or programs for people with low income and no financial security may exist and it is absolutely something I would encourage you to reach out to the schools and attendees and the general internet for. Usually, loans are also taken out to afford the cost of living in the area, which is referred to as cost of attendance (COA), which is a better representation of how much it'll truly cost for you to attend medical school somewhere. For instance, in an area with a $10,000 cost of living and $70,000 tuition, is equally as expensive as an area with a $40,000 tuition and a $30,000 cost of living. This is nuanced, but it should be looked into. This would be used for rent, living expenses, furnishing in apartment, etc. And it is one of the reasons why you might have a school debt burden of $150,000 but the attendees are in $200k+ debt. Grants and scholarships are few and far between for medical students, they exist, but they usually cannot scratch tuition. You would be surprised that a lot of people that go into medicine come from lower earning families. My father was dirt broke and worked all throughout medical school as a medic to feed himself and he took out loans. I believe Rachel is taking out loans and has mentioned it in her vlogs somewhere but I haven't watch in a while! There is an important distinction in this I must convey to you regarding loans - you may be tempted when taking out a loan package to choose a private loan and you may be forced to due to economic situations - be VERY careful when considering private loans. Federal loans (Stafford, Grad Plus, other) have certain protections built into them such as fixed interest rates, deferment periods during education, income based repayment plans, potential for forgiveness through public service loan forgiveness plans (PSLF), and are considered a safer debt to have than one from a predatory loan company such as Sallie Mae. Their offers ma be enticing with lower interest loans, but quickly become predatory. I would encourage you to always seek federal loans if possible.
@RachelSouthard

Tbh I’m not great with finances. My family is not wealthy. And I’m not being supported by anyone while I’m in school. Rn, I have over $200k in government loan debt (and counting). I live “comfortably” through budgeting. In addition, the house I’m renting a room in is incredibly inexpensive.
