I am a Sikh turbaned guy with uncut hair and beard. I got chance to live in Northern Indiana. There is a place called Mishawaka 4 hours west from Holmes county, OH. There is a Amish Community over there. I use to go to their markets and while on the country roads also I use to see them. Due to my appearance I use to get cold Eye from English but the Amish always use to greet me with smiling face.

My grandparents left the old-order Amish church, and established a new Beachy congregation in the 1950's. One of the other brethren in this new start-up church made a comment on switching from buggies to cars. Before the switch, he thought that cars would improve his ability to visit his friends, since he could just hop in and go, and be there in a few minutes. In reality, he found himself visiting his friends much less often. He couldn't explain it, other than life got much busier when he started driving a car.

I used to feel likewise until I started to read about the sexual abuse of children and the puppy mills :-( I admire them in a very general and overly-romantized way. Much of the population has great values. But the one study of a young woman who started to be violated at a very young age and later counted 200 acts against her - my gosh, no wonder she fled her Old Amish community the minute she could escape.

Congrats on this series, Peter. It really demonstrated your unique journalistic qualities and strengths to be able to keep a foot firmly planted on either side of the storyboard and it's arc. I'm from Amish country there in Ohio and have always mused, personally, as a writer, how challenging it would be to present this culture and it's seemingly infinite levels of nuance and subtle inter-social minutia while doing justice to both the subject and the audience at large. You absolutely delivered a caliber journalistic opus here. (Straw) hats off!

Watching the Amish series reminds me of my childhood. I was a kid in the '90s-2000. I grew up in a village in East Europe. I did not have tv, utilities, internet, or a car. Most of the people were using horses with carriages. My life consisted of working the land and going(walking)to school.🤣 We did have electricity, a well, a wood stove, and the toilet was outside.

I discovered some Native American traditions a few months ago (I’m not American), and I fell in love with native traditions like the herbs and the clean, organic gardening. I wish a native would teach us about all that. Medicinal herbs and stuff. I’ve found a few KZfaq channels on this topic before, but nothing I really loved. Could you make one or recommend an existing channel to me? I order special tea blends from a group of native girls in the USA, and they always smell clean, and strong and like they actually heal. 😍

I came to this series having first watched the one where he interviews a Crow on a reservation. The guy was so refreshing to listen too and I agree with your comment here. I can see a lot of crossover. On a personal level it was the work ethic that really got me thinking. The Crow guy said that it was the duty of a man to go and provide food for the children, and if he can't do this then he isn't living up to his responsibility (my phrasing). Then these Amish have a similar approach. They work hard, harder than needed in the modern world yet it's about this inter family support network, like a tribe. Great content, really thought provoking.

Is it weird of me to want to see a reality show of the two worlds colliding? 😂 not colliding in a negative way or just to ogle them, but I’d be very interested to see the reactions people from each community has during and after interacting with people from the other if that makes sense. I’m sure some of the more progressive Amish have found some of the other cultures through his channel and I’m curious to know how they react to all of them, but especially the Hasidic Jews because, as an outsider, they seem very similar (at least on Friday and Saturday nights!) Hope this comment wasn’t offensive to anyone. I just find cross culture interactions very interesting

Peter, I had not heard about you or your channel until about 2 weeks ago a close friend recommended this series. This was excellent! I watched with great interest because all of my family roots are from the Amish, Beachy, & Mennonite (Indiana & Illinois based & Pinecraft/Sarasota, FL). In the past, I watched productions which may have been well produced but greatly mischaracterized the community or saw productions (usually from ex community members) who "got" the community but it was produced poorly so as to never attract much of an audience. This was really well produced, but much more importantly, your respectfulness gave you access to the communities in ways that show you really captured it. I live in TX now and very few of my friends know much of anything about the Amish/Beachy/Mennonites except for mischaracterizations because they aren't really around my area. I can show them this and know their getting an authentic snippet. Knowing you did this series so well, I'm really excited to start your other series to learn about other communities-THANK YOU!

Thank you so much for making this Amish series. This was totally amazing and I live in Northern Kentucky and see Amish wagons and ppl all the time and now I know how to identify the Schwarzentrubers from the Old world, New world, and partially the Beachy Amish. This was a great set of videos and you are a FANTASTIC Videographer! Im a lifetime subscriber to you. Thanks again. Keep up the great work.

I absolutely love the takes you make on different ways of life. Keep it up.. As to the Amish, I personally think we are all moving towards their way of life to be honest. I am not talking about the religious aspect, but about the self reliance, off grid, homestead, regenerative farming now shooting up all over the world.. (maybe a new project for your channel, hint hint).. And a big thankyou and respect to the Amish community who took you in and were able to show parts of their life and let us feel closer and understand them better.

We can not live the Amish life style no matter how we try because everything they do is rooted in the Christian concept of loving God and loving neighbor.

I agree with moving towards self reliance and off-grid Almost everyone I know is talking about it and yes many have started on their journey to it....this year and last year. People getting off the couch and being outside more. Could lead to a trimmer society

@Outsider "I personally think we are all moving towards their way of life...self reliance, off grid, homestead, regenerative farming...". uh. no. 1/2+ of the country is headed in exactly the opposite direction with a greater reliance on government.
