The audacity of the CITY COUNCILOR to tell them they that the city poisoning a whole neighborhood is not the city's problem

I thought the same thing my city wants to put an apartment in the middle of one the biggest markets in the city. To do it will cause people to lose business and for terrible parking. Not one person in my neighbourhood is happy about it. There are three other spots near by that haven't been touched that are much better. Sometimes you really have to wonder about the city council.

I used to work in a company that handles remediation of a house that had structural water damage, and any time we confirm the house was built before 1978 we keep a close eye out for lead paint. Anything suspicious, we seal it off with plastic and call a tester and coordinate with a contractor licensed to deal with the material.

I just wanna point out one thing: it's actually rather easy to prove where the lead came from by doing an isotope analysis. Lead comes with multiple different isotopes, and the ratios between them vary slightly depending on the source. It's like a fingerprint. All you need is a certain type of mass spectrometer to do this.

Love how a psychiatrist and a neurologist had the time to go and survey a patient’s home for lead contamination. Honestly, it would have been better to walk the mom through how to do it as a preliminary test- if she found nothing then there most likely isn’t anything there. If she found something, then they could have taken further steps.

I'm currently getting my master's in environmental policy and management. This is something that has been, unfortunately, happening for decades, and his response was Definitely based in the make up of the demographic of that room. If it had been a room full of white kids white white parents who worked finance jobs, he would have had a different response than a room full of minority and low income families. Would that guarantee him taking responsibility. No, would he have been more likely to have made an early settlement offer or not saved that particular neighborhood for the end? Probably. Also, under the EPA and CERLA act the city, and the company responsible for the contamination would have to not just pay, but physically do the remediation and ensure the area was safe. It could even fall under the Clean Water Act entirely which would make the city even more liable. The systemic poisoning of minority and lower income communities is not new. And it's horrible and awful and protocols have been put in place specifically to help remediate that specif set of problems. Also, the moment the mom said he got frustrated and started hitting himself I knew it was lead poisoning. I was just surprised they didn't test the water, that's usually where lead poisoning starts these days. And would still have been the cities responsibility to fix.

My fear is that if Trump gets re-elected, or any Republican, they can make all those requirements to help, of responsibility, etc go away. Didn’t the Republican Supreme Court in the last couple of years neuter the EPA’s power just a bit? I know sometimes agencies can be overzealous, but those rules are all there for reasons. For things that happened in real life that hurt or killed real people. Are these protections safe, or can they all be wiped away by Trump and his flunkies? Also, What do you think will be discovered 50-100 years from now that we use widely now, that will be the new lead paint, asbestos, radium dials on watches, radioactive makeup, mercury based Mercurochrome, etc. (hopefully not Zero soda!)

These cases do happen frequently. The city council will deny but ultimatly most end up as class action lawsuits where the city settles quietly. So the families were probably compensated eventually it'd just take many years. Mostly the city is either unaware due to negligence or is aware and doesn't care. Like car companies they just hope ppl don't realize or connect the issue to them. To them that risk outweighs the cost of making it safe. Councils and cities do not care about people they care about money. The only reason works have safety standards is to avoid lawsuits not because they actually care if a worker dies or get hurts
