Though, while I LOVE Create, it doesn't feel vanilla. As a player that enjoys automation, I love it! But it kinda forces EVERYONE to use it, as it becomes the best option for many things- the best portable storage, making shulkers useless. The reach advantage, which really fucks with PVP and forces everyone to have that mechanical arm thingy. Oh, and the MINING- it's by far the best and lowest-effort way to mine, they're much easier to build than vanilla quarries and much faster. Those are all reasons I love it, but they're also reasons they wouldn't be good in Vanilla- the thing about vanilla is that it has to appeal to *all* playstyles.

What I like the most about the Crafter's implementation is that it shows Mojang listened and gave us exactly what the technical community asked for pretty much. The functionality is very similar to the carpet mod's auto-crafting plugin, but with a few tweaks. Previously, it has seemed like Mojang has gone out of their way to make their own original ideas when a popular community suggestion would've worked much better. I've often felt that suggesting a vanilla feature, or making a mod of things i'd like to see in vanilla could doom that feature to never be added as Mojang wouldn't want to copy someone. But this clearly isn't the case with the crafter.

well, i think having a gem of a human in their team helped them view things differently. i can remember back like 2013-15 when the first thoughts of autocrafting started to circulate. their words (verbatim) were: "no, we dont like autocrafting, we dont want people to craft their iron armor or swords. it does not fit our artistic vision".

I think it's a great balance between complexity and ease of use. Carpet mod's version was great but it's weird interactions with Hoppers made it prone to breaking if not made robust enough. Designing a honey block craft was such a pain. I don't like using premade design so it took me a lot of work to figure it out and work out the bugs. This one really balances the challenge nicely without the tedium.

To present yet another layer of depth to the potential complexity of crafting systems, you can even consider how deep of a crafting tree it uses. Take dispensers for example, you probbaly won't see most people having chests full of bows. but rather a prior crafting step of turning bows and string into bows. Additionally, crafters have the quirk of spitting their entire output out at once (i.e. 4 planks from a log). This also works when pushing into other inventories, which makes it possible to use crafter to insert items faster than hoppers or even droppers. So instead of waiting for hoppers to push 8 planks into a crafter for a chest, you can actually instead store logs and with only 2 secondary crafters fill the main one immedietlly.
@stormangel-gaming
@stormangel-gaming 7 ай бұрын
In between the Universal and Item Specific classifications I'd add Shape Specific multi-item crafters, for example note blocks and jukeboxes just substitute a different item in the middle of the recipe. And using a temp item that gets filtered out before crafting you get the chest recipe too. (and this way you get 3 categories for each level of your 4:00 diagram!)

If I could change one thing, I would add that if the crafter has two items (or an unstackable one) in each slot, the output would go above 9. Yes, this would allow to lay out most recepies and make a crafter that only creates one item easy, but I think we should not forget that not everyone has a degree in redstone. This simple change would allow for easy use by a general audience while keeping most of the difficulties for more advanced techniques

there were actually 2 competing vanilla like auto crafting variants: 1. The crafting table became block entity and has now an inventory where only 1 item could be placed in the slots by a hopper and slots couldnt be disabled. 2. The auto crafting dropper by gnembon, which is likely what the current implementation is based of as he is a mojang employee. Its basically a dropper in front of a crafting table which when activated will craft the item corresponding to the recipe inside. And again no slot disabling. The lack of slot disabling had the challenge of putting in dummy items and getting them back out.

Why?
@danielrhouck
@danielrhouck 7 ай бұрын
@@mr.cauliflower3536 Two reasons Iʼve seen, unfortunately kind of contradictory so itʼs hard to satisfy both at once: 1. You should be able to tell when a crafter is over-full; if you could tell when every slot had *more* than one item you would know you could craft something involving multiple types of items without accidentally losing track of which item goes in which slot. 2. A full crafter should have a signal strength of 15, because thatʼs how everything works, and thereʼs some tech which works best if the maximum signal strength is 15. If I were doing it, Iʼd compromise: if there are empty slots, the signal strength is the number of filled/disabled slots. If all slots are full, we look at the least-full enabled slot with a stackable item in it. If that slot has one item, the signal strength is 9; if it has 2 items, the signal strength is 10, up to 15 at 6 items. If all slots are disabled or have non-stackable items, the signal strength is 15. An alternate compromise is we look at the fraction of how full that slot is, so one item gives signal strength 9, 64 items gives signal strength 15, and we interpolate between those values so 32 items gives a signal strength of about 12. This way the container has to actually be completely full to output 15; one could argue this is more consistent than my first suggestion, but I think it is less useful.

Technically you never need a repeater, you can do the exact same thing with just torches and wire, but because it is the number one most used and redundant circuit in any contraption, they made it into a single block. Most crafting recipes in the game are going to require a blank slot, almost every contraption is going to need machinery to account for that, so, may as well just build it in and cut to the chase. in my eyes, this implementation of the crafter was between the two ideas I had, one being the set and forget, and the other being how carpet does it, where you need filler items to add holes into recipes. With this system, you can disable slots instead of using filler, but if you want multicrafting, you need a system to recycle placeholder items

Mojang is neither underappreciated nor gets too few praise. The last few updates were mostly lackluster while adding things like new EULAs, chat reporting or changing things nobody ever wanted to be changed besides all the small little things they messed up during that time. If they actually make the game better that's really nice but my attitude towards them changed since I understood that they are not our friends anymore and maybe never were. It's just another big company that would sell out their community if it makes them more money long term. A block people wanted to be added for 10 years now and always got ignored and turned down will not change that.

I may not have the technical know how of the Minecraft Redstone Community, but as soon as I saw the crafter added into the game, I thought of a general raw material sorting system, I.E. Bare minimum materials list to everything in Minecraft, that could be crafted into whatever we need. For instance, take your computers File Explorer. That's a system to allow you to search through your computers files. Quite similar to how we as players may utilize sorting systems. However, what if the analogy was literal? Take Wood for instance. We could make an entire system for all recipes that require wood and build it to specifications like we would when creating files within files in the File Explorer. Then we could take Stone and do the same thing. Iron, Gold, Diamond. The list goes on until we have every raw material in the game with it's own subdivisions of recipes. Now I am fully aware that there would be some serious spaghetti redstone once other materials are added to other recipes, but here's where things get interesting. Once you have everything you need, you could have a universal call button for each material in the system to be transported to a specialized crafter or better yet, build a separate crafting system that can be given programs to read from and produce the output automatically. How would we do this? Shulker Boxes. By utilizing Shulker Boxes and Crafters, we can essentially write our own programs for the Crafter to run and copy. For the sake of an example, say for instance we need a piston, a dispenser and a daylight detector. The first row of the Shulker would be the components for a piston from left to right top to bottom. Ex. Shulker to Crafter would be like this: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 v 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 It could be like that for all three rows of the shulker. One recipe per row. And there's your program on a thumbdrive/USB Stick. Once inserted into the machine, it could dump all needed resources for those recipes into their corresponding crafters/nearest crafter available and then when your done crafting, you could flick a switch to lock specific hoppers, thus preventing any extra materials from entering the crafter and allowing it to clear for the next program to be run. I would think this would be the endgame of the crafter tech tree, but there's likely lots more to discover about the block and it's Redstone intricacies.

i agree, im glad that they made it more of a small part of an overall redstone system rather than just one block that does it all, perfectly balanced! i already had a system for a completely different project that i thought i could use to make a universal crafter and it sort of does! My goal is to store the recipe in a minecart chest, have it unload into the crafter and then have it craft a certain amount, the recipe storage already works, its just getting the extra ingredients in there that im having trouble with. Been fun and frustrating to mess around with, which is good cos thats how complex redstone systems should feel! :)

I wholeheartedly agree. This was the best way they could implement an autocrafter into the game! Well done Mojang! If I were to give some feddback, it would be to let it work with QC for Java edition, because it closely resembles a dropper and other redstone components. So it makes sense to keep it consistent. Apart from that, would be to make it work from 0-15 in signal strength instead of the 0-9 as it is right now. This is not a huge deal, but rather a minor QoL, to streamline it to behave like other containers in the game. All in all, awesome work Mojang

The Main thing I hope they change is scaling the comparator output of it to 15 instead of 9. I think it threads quite well making it useful to the common community with toggleable slots, although it does remove some of the challenge of dummy items (which were made easier compared to e.g. the Carpet Autocrafting-table addon due to the fact you don't pull the output out the bottom with a hopper) - I think it's generally good to get it more used though does feel a little bit modded imo.

Dummy items still have their purpose in a variable item crafter.
@humourlessjester3584
@humourlessjester3584 7 ай бұрын
I think the problem with this is that it will make the variables very unintuitive since 15/9 is 0.6. They'll need to increase by 2-3 power every slot received (with the +3 powered slot be just a random number in that sequence). It might make it more useful for item filters, because we can just use existing filter designs, but not very useful to draw a comparator outputs from. Generally it's not impossible tho, and could even be more compact with the existing system. If you want this functionality in the current system just detect when it reaches nine by using a comparator signal set to 8 (a full composter), run that against the comparator that's measuring the crafter with a shared redstone dust between the two and have an observer looking at that redstone dust. It should only pulse once the crafyer hits nine and you can run that pulse directly into a block under the crafter.
@combrade-t
@combrade-t 7 ай бұрын
@@humourlessjester3584 yeah its fairly easy to get a signal strength 9 to use the current system, the point is that it is less compact to do so, and ability to compact is very important for these things to be used to their full potential. It's a lot more compact to have a redstone block next to a comparator or pretty sure you can do above aswell than needing an extra 3 blocks off to the one side, which also is where you want to put redstone for getting the items into the crafter. Potentially just having the full 9 slots make power 15 would do a lot for it, even if it is just an arbitrary jump.
@humourlessjester3584
@humourlessjester3584 7 ай бұрын
@@combrade-t Wouldn't drawing constant power from the redstone block just constantly put it on 15 tho, and just stops the crafter from starting? The system I suggested relies on there to be a signal fluctuation for the observer to detect. So in a non crafting state it is always in power 8, and it will only craft at 9. This system can't work on signal 15 with a redstone block because there is no signal 16 for it to jump to for it to detect, it will just constantly power at 15. For it to work at 15 using my design just replace the composter with a chest filled with 25 shovels, and the footprint is just the same. The design I suggested is pretty compact imo and very beginner redstone friendly, built it in a creative world in less than ten minutes and its about the size as any tileable contraption and uses just 10 blocks as a base component.

@humourlessjester3584 7 ай бұрын
@@combrade-t If you want to try this for yourself in a creative world, just to see how compact it is, place your crafter and a comparator behind it. Three blocks from your comparator put a full composter with another comparator facing the crafter's comparator and at the block between the two replace that with an observer looking up and place a redstone dust on top of it (the opposing comparators must be facing each other sharing that redstone dust). Below that observer place a solid block, then a repeater drawing power from that block set to 4 ticks facing the crafter's direction. Put a redstone dust in front of that repeater and then an observer facing the dust that should be hooked to the bottom of the crafter. It's been reliable compactor for my prototype iron farm in my creative test world.

there's some stuff that could potentially be improved. For example, now if the crafter has all slots either locked or filled with at least 1 item, it outputs a signal strength of 9 which is rather clunky to detect in a 1wt design and either requires a toggle state, or pulses twice with each item crafted which depending on the item type and input speed could be quite the issue. Yes, you absolutely could figure out the exact timings to block the second pulse but that's not really about creativity but more of an annoyance. If changing the scale to 0 - 15 (which is easily detectable) isn't gonna happen, then perhaps using the signal strengths 10 - 15 for indicating any aditional items might be a good idea. Apart from this, I have no complaints. They REALLY have done a good job.

It can still be compacted in the current iteration. Try using a full composter comparator output and run that against the same redstone dust coming out of the crafter's comparator. If that redstone dust is on top of an observer looking up, it should only give a pulse at 9, which you can then run into the bottom of the crafter to activate it. This is a 5x2x1 block tileable design. Doesn't take into account shaped recipes yet (potentially can tho) but should work well for same ingredient recipes.

@humourlessjester3584
@humourlessjester3584 7 ай бұрын
@madman2572 Not really that complicated tbh. I just set the repeater that draws power from a block below the observer to 4 ticks. This fixes the double activation issue because it registers the two pulses as just one continuously long pulse. If you're using another observer to redirect that extended pulse (I attached the delayed repeater to a lamp for extra delay that another observer then detects it, that then attaches to the bottom of the crafter), the second pulse made by the repeater delay should activate at the 4th slot and there should be no crafting recipe that is that specific shape nor are there many 4 ingredient non shaped crafting recipes either (unless you don't want to accidentally create the wrong firework star), so that extra pulse doesn't matter now. Pretty clean solution.

the one problem i have is given lag, this system could easily be broken and you'd have to reset it a lot if you have a generally bad connection, or high tps server like a lot of technical servers are. There needs to be some way to hold the recipe, even if its just once there's more than one item per slot, it outputs 10 redstone signal or something. if you want it to be able to change recipes whenever you want, you can just craft off of the 9 block strength signal. that and i can see a lot of average players not wanting to or being able to figure it out... over 70%~ of console players haven't ever gotten the nether achievement and 97%~ never completing the game, even after making it easier and all the hints mojang has implimented in recent updates....

Rays works created a design that's pretty much this. His solution is to lock the hopper when it's empty, and turn off the crafting system, keeping the recipe inside the crafter until more items come in. There will be a massive excess of material inside the crafter but this is a good thing because it proofs it of any issues you just mentioned. Any delay on timings due to server lag won't be an issue because the recipe is locked, and if for some reason the autocrafter is powered when it shouldn't be due to server issues, the excess should act as a more than ample buffer to those delays. You won't need to play around with timings in this design either since most crafting recipes have four unique items, and there are four available faces for you to attach a hopper into, all you really need is to pipe them in, power it through a block underneath the crafter, and stop powering it when one of either three hoppers stop receiving material. As for your concerns with the accessibility of redstone, redstone has always been a technical feature meant to teach those interested about coding logic and electronics, just like not everyone in the world is an engineer, not everyone can get into redstone and that's okay, there are other play styles out there like being a builder or pvp player. Minecraft is the game that it is because it caters to many play styles and having one feature try to cater to everyone's skill level is a recipe for disaster.

I really like the crafter but something i slightly dislike is the innovation. after you design the simple stuff there is no more innovating imo. for example. you designed a good 1wt crafter for a farm to craft blocks so you create it as small as you can which is really simple to do and theres no real reason to make it faster since to make the crafter not be able to craft that fast you need items to be inputed faster than 8x hopper speed which wont happen in a 1wt slice and if you 3wt its just that. no more innovation. both compactness and speed is somewhat simple to do and speed in most cases not really necessary. for example. a day after the crafter was released i made a 1wt repeater crafter. i tiled it 10 times. and the machine was able to craft 26k repeaters per hour. the mechanism wasnt very big and im pretty sure even very technical minecraft servers dont need a system to create that many repeaters an hour. the only innovation kinda that exists is making a crafter that can craft multiple recipes but thats also not really needed or practical for anything.
@pedrokotii2417
@pedrokotii2417 7 ай бұрын
I disagree. I mean, a casual player probably will just use the crafter for compacting blocks and to play around with from time to time, but think about technical servers. Almost every single one of them has something like a main storage - and it's invariably a pain to refill. Especially if you want to store every obtainable item in the game (except perhaps equipment, like armors and tools), it means large amounts of time spent crafting - either manually or via outside script. Now? You can monitor item inflow and outflow and automatocally keep the stocks in balance, nicely stacked by shulkerful, and if someone takes every quartz or prismarine block you've painstakingly crafted, you can just go get some tea or bean juice ams come back to your package ready for pickup. For more precise applications that means development in pulse control, memory, storage and transport technologies, and who knows what else.

@@pedrokotii2417 I disagree about your disagreement, partially. Yes you can use this in more complicated ways. for example i had an idea thats probably not very original but still. create a redstone factory where you have a bunch of farms connected to one big storage system and from there you can either have some buffer of crafted items that the machine has to automatically make boxes of. for example have at all time 3 boxes of every redstone component like pistons repeaters etc. and from there you can kinda order more boxes of a specific item from which it then goes to the storage system with an encoder to get the correct boxes and send them to the correct crafter for example a dispenser crafter and from there it crafts them and sends to you. this machine can get really complicated depending on how you build it THIS IS THE ACTUALLY IMPORTANT PART SO YOU CAN SKIP READING EVERYTHING ELSE I WROTE BELOW IF YOU WANT: but imo this is more about the machine itself on how to organize and encode items and be able to correctly send the right amount to the right crafter. but the crafters themselves are not really complicated. and while yes if the crafter didnt exist i wouldnt have any reason to build such a complex machine but again the machine is complex, and the crafters are not. so yea crafter is cool and awesome and i love it and its the best block added in a long time but its a bit simple.

Maybe to introduce a Block placer Block in a way that "feels like Vanilla" it will place the block, but in a random place in a 10*10*10 area around it, even replacing pre-existing blocks but won't place on or around an immovable block. Then you'd have to use immovable blocks everywhere to prevent it going in the wrong place, thus making it more difficult to use.

The utter ignorance and tone-deafness to the playerbase by essentially saying "you cannot have fun with our game, you can only play it the way we want you to" (not helped by there *still* being no modding API to this very day). I basically gave up all hope on the game and considered it a featureless game engine for mods like Create to build a real game on top of. I'm glad they finally got their heads out of their asses and listened to people for once (that wasn't about a goddamn log texture or voting on which mob to implement because they're too lazy to just do all three). I actually have hope for the game for once, despite Microsoft's despotic decisions recently.

I haven't been playing Minecraft for just over a year because tbh it just feels grindy, which, _to me_ is boring. I've wanted auto-crafting forever, but this just seems to be more work, so I'll probably never even see one. Well, at least someone's having fun. . . _Asides:_ Also 90% of players are just going to copy designs from some hardcore player's KZfaq, like so many other things in the game, so I guess double-yay for KZfaqrs. Sucks though when you constantly have to leave the game to go do research for every simple thing. And before anyone says this is just me being lazy, I would much prefer to find fun in coming up with brand new and cool ways to put the block to use, rather than even more grinding, spending my effort solving an unnecessary invented problem, just to get the block to actually even work as advertised in the first place. For example, if I decide I want to use the block in some novel redstone supercomputer or something, I'd rather spend time building the computer as opposed to debugging the stpd block. I kinda want my money back now. I actually can't believe I've grown to dislike Minecraft, but I guess such is life.

Don’t get me wrong I’m thrilled we got the crafter, buuuuuuut… Crafters are redstone related and something a LOT of people will rush to use; this will result in massive autofarms, massive redstone circuits, and crazy high levels of lag for both single and multiplayer. I genuinely fear this will be another update that splits servers- the ones who won’t update, or block the crafters use to limit lag; and those that do allow crafters and try to work around the above problems. Crafters will not work on servers with an economy system- if blocks of hold, iron, emerald, and copper can be auto crafted with almost 0 player interaction, then what’s the value of them? Why sell a gold block when everyone can get free gold blocks automatically? Piglin trading will be easier with gold farms, redstone easier with iron farms, villagers easier with emerald farms, copper worthless with copper farms- it’ll be interesting to see but overall very chaotic
