In today's video we are preparing for our first winter here in North Idaho. We will be showing our wood stove installation and getting our winter firewood bucked, chopped, and stacked for winter. We want our debt-free DIY tiny home barndominium to be warm, and non reliant on outside fuel for heating.

I hauled water and heated with wood when I was in my mid 40’s. When I was in my mid 50’s I invested in a wood splitter. I actually enjoyed splitting wood and shoveling snow. Now that I’m in my early 70’s my back and shoulders are paying for it. As you can afford it, invest in machinery to make life easier. Your body will thank you for it when you get older. I miss having the energy you both have at this stage of your life. Have fun and be safe😎

I'll be 55 in August. When I was young we heated our house, tool shed, work shop, and parlor for milking cows. Split at least 100 cord a year like that. And that was just for us, we sold at least that much if not more. We never had time to be "bored". If we weren't cutting wood it was hay cutting.

Mark Whitley my daughter’s best friend was like that. You could see every bone in that girl’s body...especially when she went through growth spurts. Yet, she could out-eat anyone hands down. Watching your little one running around the field looked like a painting, childhood defined (in another video). You need a wood shed if you aren't going to store wood in barn. It's no fun moving frozen wood from a snowed in pile in winter. Plus shed keeps wood dry during cold wet rains. Also dry wood has less insects.

Good Simple Living my 13 year old daughter and I were having a conversation about finances and the difference between needs and wants (ie clothes are a nerd but new clothes are a want). We discussed about how here in America we have the ability to make our financial desires to come true if we make wise financial decisions and it often means making small sacrifices along the way. You guys came to mind and one of your earlier videos where you discussed how you saved to make your move, the barndominium and the house possible. I greatly appreciate you sharing your journey along with insight into what it took to make your dreams come true with all of us! Blessings to you!

It's good to see teamwork making the dream work. I just returned from Idaho today. Was up looking for property. We had our eyes on a great 6 acre parcel in Naples it was however off market. Worked hard with our realtor and through some miracle she made our dream come true. The owner accepted our offer. I'm on an emotional high and can't sleep. Couple of weeks and it's officially ours. I installed the same setup in my home several years ago. While codes did change a bit here, check your local codes, the enclosure you're thinking about would be at least 12" clear all the way around and have two layers of fire rock, type x, on each side, towards the pipe. Then it would have the same setup on the outside of the shaft. Again, check your local codes. Good luck.

Yea, the weather is gonna be crazy for the next couple years as we climb out of a grand solar minimum. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood? 😁 Heck of a nice stove. It should even help heat some of that barn too. Nice tree there. Lot of wood. What was that? That would have been awesome on a sawmill. Nice pool 👍 creative. That's a good pile of wood too. It looks seasoned and hopefully will be enough to get you through the winter. Never too soon to get prepared. God bless you all and keep you safe

Aaah Memories - I don't miss having to lay in 3-4 cords of Oak each year to stay warm for the winter in the Sierra Nevada foothills, though it was certainly satisfying. After loosing everything in a 2015 wildfire I moved to a lower altitude - now I get by with a single cord. CORRECTION - I didn't lose everything - one of the FEW things I was able to salvage from the wreckage was my cute little cast-iron woodstove that I rebuilt and it keeps my trailer cozy and warm

What a beautiful day of memories made!!! Homemade swimming pool for fun, cooling down, kids' idea of keeping clean but most of all just a way of stretching out to relax a little!! The smell of fresh cut wood (hahaha), loading, unloading & stacking cords of winter's wood courtesy of the family participation! Long faces (using truck/no pool & building muscle) but short work time puts on the smiles!! The wood stove is fantastic looking & well thought out and never too soon. Growing up, we dug holes for trees, stacked wood, helped by gathering all scraps of wood/ burning materials in large trash cans with lids(to keep the bugs etc out). Parents working on the build, kids watering trees & animals, feeding even making pb & j sandwiches and other food and so much more!! Our rewards for building strength & soul a Saturday movie plus a family pack of hamburgers or chilli dogs and all with fries (such a huge treat for a family of 8) !! During the evening maybe a bit of TV. We learned the value of hard work even though we moaned & groaned! Too many ppl have given too much freedom to their children saying that it was so tough on them growing up that they want their kids to be having it a lot easier than they did (really??) What's wrong with making your bed, getting dressed, brushing hair & teeth, straightening their rooms and how about a little help at home like dumping wastebaskets or taking out trash or helping with the laundry, animals, watering and collecting eggs or even doing dishes nothing strenuous!! It's called teaching VALUES & RESPONSIBILITIES!!!! Thank you Jeremy & Melissa for teaching your family that. The Red Poppy Ranch also moved to Idaho and built their home off grid continuing to develop the land. Last winter they'd been thinking that they had plenty of wood but had to take the truck out 2 or 3 times and filled it up to get them through!!! I don't know if you follow their channel or Instagram but Heath or Cedar could tell you how much wood they ended up using for a family of 7! God's Blessings for you and your family especially for the great VALUES you teach!!!

Wow, I can't imagine that small space will need 8 cords of wood to heat during winter. When we lived in northern Main and Vermont we heated a 2 story farm house with than. However, its always best to be safe than sorry! Its been 1 of those years & may keep going till next with the weather. Nevaeh looks like she would rather be anywhere else than moving another cord of wood. I'd get the same expressions from my own teens even if they chose their job, lol Why did you go up through the roof and not through the side? It just doesn't look like it would be harder to do & seems safer. I've never seen that before. Especially in a hay loft.

Love the irony of preparing for heating the home during the hottest day of the year so far. But it's gotta be done, and I really admire your skills at prepping and planning ahead. Some super important lessons for the kids, too.

Oh the memories. This was definitely a childhood chore that I had as a kid. Split, load, stack and repeat. I should show my kids my wood splitting skills someday. I think I might surprise them. FYI you saved so much money moving that stove with you. My parents have lived in their property for 43 years and burnt through 2 stoves. They are on their third one now. Canadian winters as a kid where a bit colder. YES- you can cook pizza, soup and buns on top of wood stoves. Definitely have cooked on top of one during power outages. Definitely a great backup when needed. I remember feeding the neighbors because they couldn’t cook with the power outage and we had a wood stove and we’re cooking on it.

Wood splits a lot easier when it is frozen...lol My boys thought I was nuts when I would go out and split at 15 degrees. Split usually with one stroke. Made it look simple to the boys who never split wood before. Thought they could do it to. It took them LOTS of practice to hit the wood in the center...lol Don't forget to store about a 2 week supply in the bard, it will stay dryer and burn better. about 1 1/2 chords.

It splits even better at -15F. Even red and white oak would split easily. One year I had some red oak rounds that still had live grubs in the center of a 12to 15" round. They didnt last long once the cold hit them. Too bad it wasn't trout season.

Winter will be a learning curve. You will do fine. Wood heats several times. When you cut it, when you split it and when you burn it. I think you will like it. Hang in there, you are dong fine.

We heated an old 2 story with old windows in ohio with a wood furnace and blower. Whole house 80 non stop. Used about 10 cords a year. Yours is way better insulated, so 6 probably pretty close to right. I cut during the summer as well. Take a random day to knock out a tree at a time, no rush and no freezing to keep up with the needs. Love to see the family working together!

Way to build family unity through the satisfaction of completing a labor intensive mission as a family. That momentary glimpse on Nevaeh’s face of “hard labor (in the blazing heat) sucks” said it all. At least it wasn’t done in body armor!!! Which, if any, electrolyte drinks do you use to stay properly hydrated? I love the contrasting attire, Melissa in a tank top and Jeremy in a long sleeve sport shirt. Which shirt works better to stay cool?

When I was living at my parents house younger, my father made me bring all the wood inside for the winter, with a wheelbarel, I did hate it. Been on the road for about 16 years, and now I have my own place in the mountain me too ( not as big as your ;) ) for the past 19 years, guess what, I have two wood stoves at my place. One in the basement and one in my living room. Make about 15 cords of wood per year and one thing I have learn, less you handle the wood, better it is.... I also did build a simple wood shed that keep my wood always dry. So next time, maybe instead of throwing the wood on the ground from the pickup, take it and cord it right away, so ! you will manipulate it one less time ;) I just discover your videos today and I have been sending a part of the day watching them ( good thing it was raining outside ) :) :) love them and I will keep watching your stories. Thank you

It's been unusually hot this year in most of the country! I'm in Ohio and don't remember a summer this hot in about 23 years or so! My little window air conditioner has been getting a real workout this year and I hate air conditioning but it's been that hot since June!

Radiant wood heat just can't be beat! I've found a nice, thick rock wall behind the heater/stove will keep the place toasty for hours after the fire is out. And I love MY almost 10 year-old Farm Boss...can't beat those either! 👍🏻❤️📹#BackTheBlue
