You need to remember that the Marines aren't working with students, they are trying to create obedient killers. This is such an amazing movie.

Lee Ermey is the only person I know who could put up a sign saying "I insult you for $ 20" and people would pay for it.

I imagine that screaming at soldiers during training is teaching them to be calm under stress, and not to react to personal offense.

if u can't handle a pissed off drill instructor, you won't handle combat.

Back then you had to be hard. There is no "My feelings is hurt" in war

As a retired Marine, I respect this movie mostly for Gunny Ermey who was a real DI in our beloved Corps. May he rest in peace.

My father was a drill sergeant just like that, his men hated him ,but when they came back from Vietnam they thanked him for teaching them to survive

You grew up in the Military?! really?! and you're saying they don't deserve that? They're being prepared for war, which by the way is more ruthless than 100x what you see or hear here.

My dad was a private in the Marines during the Vietnam War and the DI portrayal is accurate he always told me. When he got to be a sergeant himself, he was talking to his platoons the same way. When he got out, the language cleaned up but the attitude was still there. Once a Marine, always a Marine!!

All my staff NCO's were Korean and Vietnam combat veterans. The training seems harsh but it made me appreciate being an American.

Fun fact, for the Japanese version Kubrick had to use a Japanese pornographer to translate Sgt Hartman’s insults

Full Metal Jacket starts with 25 minutes of screaming and cursing and is great to watch.

I'd rather have someone toughen me up with insults than be coddled and completely unprepared for an enemy with no remorse.

You guys have to understand. those men may be forced to move forward and attack a situation in which they will be killed. these men must follow orders even in the situation that they will die horribly. they get broken down to nothing then built back into marines. This is what makes a man charge an enemy machine gun with no regaurd for his own life. Men that go through this fight for the man next to them. understand that

Served in the US Army between 2009-2013, as an officer, and seeing civilians react to training treatment is amusing. Take it from me, if you cannot cut it during basic training, then the life in the field isn't for you. You eventually get used to the insults, and after some time, you're desensitized to crudeness lol.

I went through Marine Recruit Training on Parris Island in the early 1980s, a few years before that movie was made. My Senior Drill Instructor was just like Gunny Hartmen. Its not a joke.
