Primal oozes early 2000s and it's so good. The opening scene in the club that's reminiscing of teen horror movies of that era, the character design, everything. I remember getting it back when i was a teen and i really loved it. I'm not sure why it's so unknown though, i remember seeing TV commercials for it quite often back when it came out, but then later on, whenever i'd mention the game, no one knew what i was talking about.

Yeah. I remember seeing this game in the shop all the time. But never knew anyone that owned it. I was a GameCube person, so had to rely on my friends having it, and they just had Tekken and TimeSplitters (not that I’m complaining about that!).

Ha. I swear the fact that old games used to take risks and try new things really makes them hold up better than a lot of current games will do in 20 years.

Also there was a lot of custom engine tech each dev made for their games making them all feel pretty unique from one another. Before everything was made in Unreal.

PK is an actual comic that has the same story as in this game, including the shield.

Heck yeah, Primal's on here! Coincedence that the PK game is on here as well- was just reading one of the Premium pocketbook rereleases. If you don't know, the European Disney comic scene is *ehquite* big and Paperinik, known in English as the Duck Avenger. It started out with Donald finding the hiding place of a previous-era gentleman thief named Phantomius, and based on Phantomius' equipment Donald develops a kind of escapist character alter ego to get back at annoyances in his life. Over time he became a more outright heroic character. Now, the normal Duck Avenger comics are quite light-hearted, but Paperinik New Adventures take a quite more serious tone. The main villain is an alien empire that essentially lobotomizes or zombifies their victims, then uses the resulting "Coolflames" as these wretched slave creatures are known as manual labor and cannon fodder. One of their main enemies is an alien lady with a *big* mohawk and the power of a star who can manipulate energy and, to a degree, matter. Her name is Xadhoom, which means "Creditor" in her language, and she has vowed genocide on the entire empire. She's one of the good guys. There's other stories involving geothermic manipulation, organized crime and corruption, time police, ethics between androids/artificial intelligence and humanity in the future, and more. There's more than enough levity too, though. I'm saying all this to give an idea of how truncated the game you played is compared to its source material This channel did a very good look at the comics and its sequel series: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNRmY5hhzMzeeKc.html The guy here played the game too but he's a lot more critical of it. Anyway, back to Primal: For me, i thought the moment-to-moment gameplay was alright, servicable, with the water realm being the worst. I really like the characters, writing, atmosphere and world at large, great performances and animations to the characters. May the voice of Scree, Andreas Katsulas, rest in peace. Really surprised to see Pryzm as well. I found it in a game store sometime last year, had *never* heard of it before and got curious. I played it, thought it had its charm, but while i didn't hate it... i didn't enjoy playing it. Found it kind of annoying.

Primal isn't a hidden gem tho it's been on psn for over a decade maybe more and it was a huge game on release
@jurtheorc8117
@jurtheorc8117 2 ай бұрын
@@petebagwell6666 I can't speak about the release, but even games that are on PSN can be considered a "hidden gem". PSN has a great amount of games on offer, and Primal can fall by the wayside amidst all the other games. Presence on PSN alone does not guarantee that an older game is more known again, as much as it can help.

Pirates lobk looks good, as well as Primal. I'm surprised you didn't include Predator concrete jungle in this video. It's one of my favorite ps2 games and its really expensive to buy here in the US. Thanks for another great video

I do actually have the Predator game. Partly didn’t include it as I have it on the Xbox, and I’ll probably do a similar series for that 😅

Prisoner of War was a difficult, but rewarding hidden gem I loved as a kid. Peter Jackson's King Kong is possibly the greatest and most enjoyable King Kong game ever made with incredibly fun gameplay. Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy is immensely engaging and a gem that is slept on. Predator Concrete Jungle is another recommendation as playing as a Predator from the movie series in such a dynamic setting blew my mind as a child.

I played the hell out of Police 24/7 in the local arcade back in the day. When you say the mechanics don't work that well with the ducking, I can confirm you are correct. My knees took one hell of a beating and I couldn't get too far before it hurt to play 🤣

Oh nice. I would have loved it in the arcade! It’s a cool idea. But I probably would have head butted a wall or something by accident.

@@thereviewsbrothers3854 😂 Like me with a VR headset! Thankfully though the cabinet had a pressure mat in front of it so if there was a pillar to your left in game you could lean in that direction to take cover and then, obviously, lean right to peek out and shoot. I wonder if any of these machines survive somewhere? 🤔

Yay! Of all the games I recommended, Primal is by far my favourite and it was so disliked on release. The game is great, and I really wish we could get a remake/remaster, or even the sequel that got shelved. This vid had some more excellent recommendations that I'm gunna have to "find" and "definitely buy" to try out.

Sweet to see other people who are already familiar with Primal! Writing, characters, atmosphere and lore were the strongest part of that game. Jen has the sweetest and kindest voice i've ever heard from a tough punk-looking girl. Like with many other games, i hope it can make a good return someday.

@@jurtheorc8117 it never did get the love it deserved, and few people seem to remember it whenever I bring it up, so it's definitely nice to see so many comments on here speaking so fondly of it 😊

No Psi-Ops? Are we considering that to be a not so hidden gem or did you just criminally underrate it by not including it?

Primal is one of those games that sounds really good on paper, a fantasy action adventure focusing on exploration and combat, but is actually absolutely atrocious. Fighting is garbage, the transitioning between regular and monster form takes forever, there are the obligatory confusing and annoying water levels, the story and setting are 2000s' teenie cringe, exploring and upgrading/new monster forms are unrewarding, the gargoyle is even more sluggish than the embarrassingly edgy metal maiden and so on. The result is a s#!tty game that's completely overrated and devoid of any fun. A true hidden phlegm.
