Today, I am showing how to replace a defective capacitor on a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15-Inch with an 820-2850 Logic Board. You should only perform this repair if the MacBook experiences random shutdowns, Kernel Panics, GPU anomalies, or in some cases, no power.

My 2010 15-inch MacBook was freezing the image after appearing on the startup disk partition, and the screen consistently turned clear gray. I upgraded the capacitor to a larger 330uF. Now, the system progresses further, displaying the Apple logo and then the login screen. However, subsequent to this, it freezes the image, and the screen turns clear gray. Should I attempt using a 470uF capacitor, or could there be another issue unrelated to the capacitor?

Awesome video. Used it to replace my capacitor, but have you a video or instructions for those of us who removed the contact pad from the logic board for the fan. The plastic 4 pin contact pad. Thanks in advance.

Hi there Michael. I appreciate you calling us. So sorry it took a while to reply back to your comment. Where you able to get this resolved?

Unfortunately trying to replace the 4 pin connectors is testing my patience and talent, which means I’m doing it wrong lol. Do I need to re-ball the points on the board itself, because it seems almost impossible to solder the contacts to the board without bridges. Thanks for your response.
@iRevive
@iRevive 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelglaab897 you’ll want to use plenty of flux to prevent the the pins from bridging each other. Apply solder to one pin first. This will hold the connector in place. Then move on to the next pin. If you accidentally create a bridge, use a little bit of wick to remove the excess solder.

Can I use 220 or 470 or 560 capacitor instead of 330?

Thanks for this. How hot is the airgun and what temperature should it not exceed to avoid frying the capacitor ?
@iRevive
@iRevive 3 жыл бұрын
Depending on your rework station, anywhere from 400c to 500c. Just refrain from heating the area for too long. It is better to use a higher temperature and work fast than it is to use a lower temp and work slow for this repair.

@@iRevive Thank you! What diameter, and type of solder did you use to resolder the pads, and the type of flux used? Also, is there a method of doing this without a rework heat gun ?(which I don't have and may have to buy). Am completely new to this so need to get it right first time (or at least try not to screw it up :)
@iRevive
@iRevive 3 жыл бұрын
@@mindfulawareness1 I use Kester "245" 63/37 solder and Amtech nc-559-v2-tf flux. I have a link to both in the description. You you do not have a rework station, you can also you micro soldering tweezers. But the Quick 861DW is going to be more affordable than purchasing Hakko soldering tweezers. I should have a link in the description to the Quick as well.

@@iRevive I'll let you know how it goes. I have two Mid-2010 MacBook Pros to fix for my family. One had the logic board replaced for free by Apple under the extended service program (now expired). But that logic board failed after about 18 months. Apple Genius Bar refused to replace it again. I don't have all the proper bench tools to do this myself but one of my sons is an electronic technician who does have the tools.

Thanks for the video. Can you please tell me where the capacitor is located on the mid 2010 13" board?
@iRevive
@iRevive 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Sorry for the delayed response. The 13" boards do not have a GMUX since there is no discrete GPU on this model, so there is no GMUX capacitor for the 13" model.

@@iRevive Thanks for the reply and update. Any idea why there would be a kernel panic in my 2010 13” MBP soon after starting? I’ve done every software trick that I know so far. One clue could be the fact that the wifi isn’t reliably working. In system information the wifi shows signs of loading up, also the wifi symbol appears at the top right of screen, sometimes the network name is seen, but no joy there when connecting. Could be physically disconnected near the screen hinge. If so, could this cause a kernel panic? Thanks.
@iRevive

@@reelMn there are many reasons for kernel panics. Bad ram, bad SATA cable, liquid damage, etc. what does the kernel panic report say?

Thank you James. This is a permanent fix if you replace the capacitor with the recommended Panasonic LX0D331R that store.rossmanngroup.com sells. That is the capacitor we used in this video.

Hi, does this fix work on the 17” MBP from the same model year, mid-2010? I just started having GPU kernel panics after 10+ years of no issues. Black screen restarts, and if it reboots, the GPU kernel panic report. Works when I try not to use the discrete GPU, have gfxCardstatus installed to monitor usage. Unfortunately my computer doesn’t always reboot after a crash, it gets hung in a cycle trying to power off with a soft clicking sound from the upper LHC near the MagSafe plug, not near the hard drive. Usually have to wait awhile for it to cool down and then push the power button. Do you have any repair suggestions, as I’ve heard the capacitor repair or kext file mods don’t work on the 17”, only the 15”. Many thanks.

I am not sure why I am just now seeing this comment. I didn’t see a notification for it. Is there any update on this Mac? If you are still having this issue, it maybe more related towards your GPU. From my understanding, the 17-inch 2010 did not have the same issue as the 15-inch.
