Repairing a Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro that Kernel Panics when Using the Dedicated GPU

In this video, I go over a very common issue with the Mid-2010 15" and 17" MacBook Pros with the nVidia GeForce GT 330M dedicated video card. Essentially, what happens to these systems is a capacitor on the GPU framebuffer power rail fails, and starts to pull the rail low. When this happens, it will cause the machine to kernel panic when switching to or running off the dedicated video card, and in some cases can simply cause no image to appear on the LCD at all. In this video, I go over the process of replacing this faulty, undersized capacitor with one of the same specifications that is much larger, preventing this issue from ever happening again in the future.

Hello, it is June 16, 2024... I followed all your instructions and repaired a macbook pro mid 2010, I have had it operational since yesterday, working without problems... excellent information, thank you very much, and just as a piece of information, with I have installed OpenCore legacy patcher Sonoma 14.5, it is wonderful to see a 2010 mac running with macos 2024.

As an amateur it was looking like a very difficult repair, but w the right tools (hot air station, trinocular microscope, the right replacement cap, and lots of patience it was ultimately relatively easy, now no kernel panics! Yay!

Thanks to you Dosdude. I got ripped off on ebay for two caps that were supposed to solve this issue, but made no difference. Luckily I have a dead 2011 MBPs that I could use as a donor, and following your video both of the 2010 MBPs are now as good as new, working like a charm, and allowing iMovie and old games like Portal 2 to work flawlessly. The computer lessons with young daughters can now resume. I would love to know how many MBPs have been saved from the scrap heap by this! My first component level logic board repair! Thanks again!

Total soldering novice here and I successfully completed this repair today! Made a funnel for my heat gun using aluminum foil and a hose clamp which worked well to remove the old capacitor, then cleaned off the old solder, applied some fresh solder, positioned the new capacitor in place, held it down with some tweezers and then heated it onto the board. Reassembled and now it no longer panics! Being totally honest I was so surprised I managed to execute this correctly as I hadn’t touched a soldering iron since my school days, but just shows anyone can give it a go.

@@kpaxxapk6397 “Every year model has some fatal flaw that keeps failing” Any electronic product can glitch, and usually the numbers of affected units are low. That capacitor flaw wasn’t unique to Macs. The capacitors got OLD fast because they were flawed from the supplier. If Apple had a crystal ball, they’d have used a different style of capacitor, but of course, they can’t see the future. They did cover repairs for laptops three years out. It’s farther than most manufacturers will go. The problem was, only a brand new logic board had a brand new capacitor on it... It was six years until someone identified the capacitor as the problem instead of the GPU. The irony? Reheating the logic board in an oven also rejuvenated the capacitor, gaining about nine months.

@@Jkirk3279 "The capacitors got OLD fast because they were flawed from the supplier." I thought it was due to them using too small of a capacitor. "If Apple had a crystal ball, they’d have used a different style of capacitor, but of course, they can’t see the future." Yeah, but they also could have had a useful repair program that supported more than a few months of machines. "They did cover repairs for laptops three years out. It’s farther than most manufacturers will go." Yeah, and it only supported machines bought within the last three years. Came out in December 2013, and went three years back (dec. 2010). See any problems there? "It was six years until someone identified the capacitor as the problem instead of the GPU." True, but it shouldn't have been a problem to begin with. Since it was a problem, it should have been handled less terribly. I love my Macs (currently typing on my MacBookPro13,3), but Apple is nowhere near perfect. Apple was not innocent in this situation.

Wow! Cool videos dosdude1!. Do you have any idea why a MacBook pro late 2011, running High Sierra (can't update to Mojave) behaves like this: - randomly reboots. - randomly goes to black screen, then gray screen. No icons. - Video issues: randomly, the image moves horizontally (like if the video output were displaced), some kind of gray grid, green bars, duplicated frames.... The Mac had a similar issue years ago, apple replaced the logical board. I don't have warranty now. So I'm looking for options. I want to find the exact problem. Already fixed permissions on the HD. Rebooted with command option p r. And ran the HW test tool. No issues detected. Currently running the long test...

Hey DosDude, you’ve made a fantastic video. I have a mid-2010 MBPRO with exactly the same issue. I have an old 2008 unibody MacBook Pro13 with 330 d89f capacitors on the motherboard. Could I use the 330 d89f capacitor to fix the graphics card issue? Many thanks. Keep up the great work.

Say you could upgrade a soldered processor to a 2010 Mac Mini with a 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo, What other processors in that line would be candidates for an upgrade? Would it be worth it for such a small possible gain?
@dosdude1
@dosdude1 5 жыл бұрын
I've done this before (check my Axiotron ModBook upgrade/modding video). The best CPU you could solder onto that board is a 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo T9900.

If you ever feel like making the worlds fastest Mac mini 2010, I wouldn't mind shipping you mine. I think the processor costs 50-60 so the most expensive part would be your labor. It may not be worth it financially, but it would be cool as hell.

I have this problem. Bought a used dead Mac to just swap my internals over since I had a few other issues (a lot, cracked screen blown speakers bend case, cracked trackpad which was replaced and cracked in the same spot to name a few) turns out the logic board on the new Mac is bad :/ Soo now I'll have to send my logic board off to get soldered or buy everything I need (don't have my iron anymore) and practice on the dead board before attempting this repair on my own board.

I just did this to a mid 2010 15" MacBook Pro. I used the caps from Louis Rossmanns website. but when I force it to use the dedicated graphics it will still panic. would that mean that I have a really rare graphics card that is bad on these? thanks for your videos man. really help out with a lot of stuff

Mine does this some times but instantly happens when I try to run a 3d program like cinebench r15 3d test. I'm kind of scared to mess it up since I have no experience with soldering.

Ditto. Mine does it ALOT more than it used to, especially with the current OS I'm on. (High Sierra) Its still a perfectly usable computer for me. 2.4Ghz i5, 8 gigs RAM, and a 1 TB SSD. The SSD REALLY woke this thing up, made it feel like a new computer again. I replaced the old swollen Apple battery with an eBay battery, only issue I have now is the nvidia GeForce GT330M kernel panicking. I use gfxCardStatus to manually switch to the integrated Intel graphics, but I wish there was a setting I could type into the terminal to permanently disable the nvidia. I'm a complete novice with soldering, especially with the tiny capacitors in these modern computers, otherwise I'd try it myself.

djhaloeight yea I use gtxcardstatus to keep it on integrated on Mac OS Mojave also running 8gb ram, i7 but still have the 1tb 5400rpm hdd

@@djhaloeight Hi there! With v1.8.1 of gfxCardStatus you can actually do that: start it, configure, switch auto.update off (which you can in this version), and tehn you can even chose to statup and stay with the intel GPU, which prevents it from ever swithcing to the Nvidia (you could also do it vice-versa, but in this case it's not you want :-( ). Have been running my MBP for wees like that now withou a single crash!
