Dean Z has finally recorded a new app reading episode where she shows you how she looks through an entire law school application. For "Nathan" his numbers are good but his resume and essays tell a different story. This episode should make you think about the holistic application and feel like you have power beyond your LSAT and UGPA.
You can leave questions in the comments below or email at Dean Z at law.jd.admissions@umich.edu and put A2Z Vlog in the subject.

I found this series this morning and have been fascinated by it. It is easy to get the feeling that your numbers are all that matter in this process, but Dean Z's breakdown shows how human the process actually is.

It would be great to see an app reading of an applicant that was significantly below one (or both) of the LSAT/GPA medians but was still admitted due to the rest of their application's strength. Thanks for your videos!

I’m a 1L this year, but I still love coming back and watching A2Z because it’s so interesting (and Dean Z is the best)! If you’re thinking about applying to law school, this series was invaluable to me as a first gen student and I highly recommend watching all the videos. My only qualm is that there is no longer a grammar section of the videos! How am I supposed to learn fun words like “draconic” now? Or get world-class analyses of the Oxford comma or em dashes? Please bring it back!

We love to hear it! I'll let Dean Z know the fans are asking for the return of the grammar section!

Can you do an application reading of an applicant who may not have the best gpa and an ok or great lsat who you may have accepted.

Very important, because oftentimes paid tutors and test prep companies will use these numbers as a way to scare potential applicants into buying a package. Sometimes it isn't about having a perfect score along with gpa, sometimes it's just about self reflection.

I felt when she said something about the application made made her want to be oppositional. I got an unlikeable vibe from this application as well. That highlights a huge takeaway, one that I'll be keeping in mind as I navigate this admissions cycle, to be mindful of how you come across to the readers.

Can we have some videos of non traditional students who have been out of undergrad for 8+ year with work experience?

I started a KZfaq account just so I could try to get an answer on this, because I'm extremely curious and nervous about this element. Is it possible that you could explain why you ask for information on parents? I grew up in a single parent household with an extraordinarily abusive parent and once I turned 18, I never looked back. I never officially got emancipated or anything, but from my 18th birthday on, I've gone no contact with that parent - the only parent I ever had. Becoming an adult was so exciting to shed that burden, but now it feels like it's following me when it comes to law school applications. Is it possible to know the reason why you want to know info, including address etc., of parents? I have seemingly literally no one/nothing to put, unless I put someone I'm dying not to have involved in my life. Sorry for the trouble and thank you so much for your time.

I find it extremely discouraging that you focus so much on the information people write about their parents. What's wrong with someone not talking about a certain parent? Maybe they only grew up with one parent or just don't have a good relationship with one parent? Why is that a negative? Not every applicant grows up in a perfect two parent household. This is a very weird thing to zoom in on.

I’ve also found it confusing. I’m a reapplicant to most law schools and I don’t know my father, so initially he was left off of my application. But last video that I watched where she honed in on it, she viewed leaving a second parent as blank as potentially a sign of “laziness” so for this cycle I’ve made it a point to fill in everything I do know and be transparent and “unknown” for things that I just don’t know about a parent that I do not know. Now I’m worried that no matter what I do that there’s some negative way to spin that I just don’t have two parents to be able to fill out these forms

@@Irie_k Ye I grew up with a single parent (I know who my dad is but I've never lived with him). Just her tone and the way she talks about this makes me not want to app to Michigan.

Thank you for expressing your concern, because I want to make sure I'm clear about this point! It is not at all an issue not to give information about a second parent; I see that all the time and it is not something that raises concerns as a general proposition. What I thought was odd here is that the candidate talks about his second parent elsewhere in the app, and makes it clear that the parent is part of his life, but then chose not to fill out the relevant part of the application-which I took as one of several indications that the person wasn’t putting full effort into things. The point here is attention to details. One small detail like this is not at all an issue but if your application is full of minor discrepancies, it can add up to a greater concern that could have an effect on your decision. As an aside-when I do these file reads, I am indeed noting every single tiny thing I can, in an effort to give as much guidance as possible-but I do worry that the detail I’m giving might end up making people a little neurotic! When I am actually reading applications, it is likely that a few of the things I mention in a video are the things I wouldn’t have even noted; in other words, please take all the tiny details I point out with a HUGE grain of salt about what role they would play in real life.
