A32NX Gets Hydraulics! System Overview with a Real Airbus Pilot! Ft ToLiss A321

The FlyByWire A32NX now has a functioning hydraulics page and systems, so today we take a look at what this means and what these systems do for us as pilots! We will also look at some more advanced details and failures using the ToLiss A321 as well!

I am a real world Airbus pilot with thousands of hours flying the real aircraft and thought it would be fun to have a look at the new detailed simulation of the longest baby 'bus by Toliss as well as the new MSFS a320 NEO. Hopefully you find this useful and it brings another perspective to your simulation. Any thoughts or comments are welcome!

On a far, far smaller scale, the hydraulic systems on the fork lift trucks we work with are under high enough pressure, so much so when a pipe bursts on the lines the thin jet can pierce skin. Add to the fact hydraulic fluid is extremely deadly! Scary but very useful stuff.

When I was an aircraft fueler, we had notices on every wall of our office about how scary a hydraulic leak was and what to do (GTFO and notify flight crew immediately). Loss of limb not unheard of

oh yes, it is really beautiful .. i am still overwhelmed how nice those reflections and lighting effects and the weather engine look. but if i want to be nitpicking, there is one thing i noticed ... you would be supposed to see the aircraft reflected on the engine when watching from the cabin instead of just the scenery ;)

Excellent video again! You did a fantastic job explaining at what for me is a perfect level. When I saw FBW were working on hydraulic system modelling I was like "meh - would rather have holds working" and just ignored it. Now I'm fascinated and see another thing to bore my friends with about this sim :-) (Would still like holds implemented as even the Heavy Division 787 seems to have a solid capability there) More like this please - brings it all alive for me.

Absolutely stonking vid. All those pax who sit in the back have no appreciation of what goes on with the aircraft systems. Years ago I saw an undercarriage retraction jack pipe rupture in the hangar during retraction functionals and the mess is considerable and the very reason why everyone stands back. BAe146-301 flying out of Cranfield, UK when a hydraulic pipe ruptured. That makes quite a distinct sound too as the pump tries to pressurise an empty system! Kind of like it was screaming...

amazing video sir thanks 3000 psi that's insane so much info brilliant nice to see it simulated as well what a great aircraft so if your powering both systems from the flight deck ptu bark nose in cabin bark might be heard is that correct please so if 2 systems failed would only one side of the elevator work would that give you a roll rate

Fantastic having watched this video and all the Fenix stuff I am beginning to understand the hydraulic system. I was sitting opposite the wing on an A320 once watching the ailerons. They did not move perceptibly at all only the spoilers on top of the wing moved.I assume there were no failures. Do the ailerons only come in to play when you roll a lot?

I wonder if it was cheaper to fit the PTU instead of just adding another electric pump to the green system as a back up. They did it for the A330 and A340 where all pumps have engine or electric pumps then green also has RAT

Think of the hyd acc as a balloon. When any hyd pp is running the balloon is being blown up to 3000 psi. When the system fails the balloon still has 3000 psi to put back into the system. Great if the failure is a pump. It gives some reserve pressure. Not so great if it is a burst more spill.

What could be my problem if the fbw doesn’t climb all the way, and it’s 200 feet short, and the altitude starts blinking? I change altimeter at transition altitude to standard.

Not yet, the VNAV is not there, but there is a top of descent calculator in the fly pad efb/tablet now!

I never noticed the green ring just inside the engine inlet for the left engine. Is there a yellow ring inside the right engine inlet also? Just wondering.

No it’s just a feature of the PW1000 engines. Same on both sides

Thank you for this video! But what happens if you lose hydraulic fluid in all three systems (as has happened in the past). Can we still control the plane with the thrust of the engines and land without too much damage?

Depends on how much thrust changes affect pitch and turn. Nobody wants to test that

Guess it's because they're now developing more complex systems. The first updates dealt with all the things wrong with the default aircraft. A lack of stable updates is more than likely a very good thing, considering the near daily updates to the development build 🙂

@@ganntradingsystemstimecycl2783 Make sure you setup your throttle detents in the EFB Tablet for the dev version. That should fix any throttle issues.

The current Hydraulics simulation is just the basic simulation, but they are planning to simulate each actuator as well in the future. It just takes a lot of time to accuratly simmulate such a thing with realistic numbers. You might have to redo this video in a few months if it is completed

Does a pilot always start the chrono from the moment he starts an engine?

I believe so as there a is warm up time for the engines as well as making sure they start in time

@@tomstravels520 That makes sense. I always thought they did it from the moment they started the takeoff, because you can only run on toga thrust for 5 minutes if I'm not mistaking. But then again they could just reset it at takeoff I guess? :D

@@Byzzon I have the elapsed time start from pushback to parking and the Captain Chrono running from TOGA to off the runway. Then use the chrono in the centre for anything else like a circling approach timing

Chrono is used to time each engine start, restarted for each. After the second engine is running it is restarted to time the warm up. At takeoff it is restarted again to time the takeoff thrust. Hope this helps!

The A380 and A350 system runs at 5000psi but only has a yellow and green system

Yes I believe they have a more advanced way of control in the event of a fluid loss

@@320SimPilot yes. The EHA’s or EHBA’s installed in some of the control surfaces. A mini hydraulic circuit where the fluid is isolated from the main system I believe

@@tomstravels520 You have to quite closely. Cracks and gaps in various places. Fan blades etc. Not a big deal as it's a great plane.

The ToLiss visual model is very accurate and functional, but of course the MSFS aircraft always look stunning! I suspect with the new X Plane lighting system we will see the ToLiss looking very nice in X Plane

That happened to United Airlines Flight 232, and impressively enough they managed to land by using the engines to control yaw, pitch, and roll. There were lots of fatalities, though the fact anyone survived, is incredible.

@@iamdefective1912 look up OO-DLL. An A300 cargo plane that lost all 3 hydraulic systems after a missile strike. Landed safely and all 3 pilots survived

The only plausible way I can think of to lose all 3 systems and have no use of the RAM turbine is some kind of catastrophic engine failure resulting in an explosion and/or the fan blades coming loose and severing the hydraulic lines. As you can imagine, you've got a fair bit more than just the hydraulics to worry about in that scenario

So the reality is..... It's all very nicely programmed in, visually it shows correct, but ultimately it's all just smoke mirrors as even though it shows as failed, there is no pressure in the failed systems, the failed systems still work!! Think I'll be keeping X-Plane for a lot longer..

Airbus does not have VNAV. I assume you mean managed descent modes to correctly calculate where the T/D is?

@@Speckled10 mostly likely. It needs to be able to calculate a profile where it will hit speed and altitude constraints, slow down with enough time and the 250 Limit at 10,000ft

@@tomstravels520 Yes but everyone always refers to that part of the autopilot as VNAV since, its not a real aircraft and were just talking about simulators.

@@Speckled10 Because it isnt in the sim yet, there isnt an aircraft in the sim with a full proper working autopilot and FMC (aside from the CRJ, but that is a fairly simple system)
