I'm 66 yrs. old and have been weight training since I was 21 (1978). Like a ship without a sail, I too blundered through countless hours and years of reps & sets & inefficient exercises, following the routines of world class bodybuilders not meant for someone who worked 60 hours a week, with a family and responsibilities. I, like most, did not share the ability to lay on a beach in California and having sponsors paying my bills. I was grossly overtrained for more than a few decades and made very little progress. Oh, how I wish I could have stumbled upon this information back then!!!!!!

And it exposes questions you need to answer. However, THE REQUIREMENT of this process is a curious mind. You must want to learn and be rewarded by learning. Clearly, you are. Thank you for wrestling through this for all these years. Like many others, I am benefiting from your development.

I am in ex. science uni in Italy, second year. My rehabilitation teacher started showing us how to rehabilitate someone who had some kind of back/leg injury I guess, by having them do rehab exercises like cat/dog or superman, stuff like that, surprise surprise...on a bosu ball/using elastic bands unnecessarily and all I could think of was HWHY?! the exercise is good enough and works when you do it on the ground, why are you adding an imbalance variable to rehabilitate someone with an injury?!! He then goes on to teach us (or should I say just tell us) what the next progression should be, and this was it: hack squat - leg press - regular back squat (of course the picture showed a guy doing high bar half squats looking up) - pistol squats (?!!!!) and THEN OF COURSE.... Pistol squats on a bosu ball. that's when I decided I don't think I want a degree that attests that I learned this bullshit. These people actually think that adding complexity and difficulty to something means that it's better for you (i.e doing bosu ball pistol squats is "harder" or more complex than doing regular squats so they should be done last in a rehabilitation program). All they want to achieve is for us students to learn a bunch of unnecessary bullshit so we can pride ourselves and show off our "knowledge" to the average Joe. I'm pretty sure most of my classmates will never lift a weight in their life because they all play sports, and 99% of those who will end up in a gym don't know how to squat and won't need to know how because no one will correct them, and yet their degree will have people take for granted that they know what they're talking about

Q&A: Hey Rip. I understand that we prepare for a physical performance using three tools: strength training, practice with the same circumstances we wish to perform in, and conditioning to execute the movement for an extended period of time. My question is this: how specific should conditioning be for a given sport? For example, I am a boxer at my university. Should I do general conditioning--e.g., pushing the sled, heavy carries, etc.--or should I aim to find something more specific to boxing? Thanks.

Well I think Mr Rippetoe is the Newton of physical fitness, and the Starting Strength is as powerful as Newton’s laws of motion, it works in this universe very time and it’s simple, brief and elegant, backed with profound thinking and logical methodology.

Not to start a fight, I’m genuinely curious, could you clarify? To my knowledge, they don’t really seem to copy his programming or training style. Yes they all do the exercises like he recommends (it’s exercises, might as well pick the variations you think are best), and they train relatively heavy on the big lifts (thought not AS heavy as Rip recommends) and all that, but to me they all just train for strength, not necessarily like Starting Strength coaches teach. Plus they all do far more movement variation and assistance work than Rip suggests

I've gone from 265 deadlift to 350 lbs in approximately three months, including minor injuries and colds. Squats have gone from 265 to 310 (probably 330 but haven't tested that yet) in same amount of time. Bodyweight from 169 to 183 lbs. Caveat is I've actually implemented lots of accessory core exercises like back extensions, plank, hamstring curls, crunches, lunges, hip extensions and good mornings. Not saying Mark is wrong but this approach obviously also works. However I do admit that the workouts take an enormous amount of time and is unreasonable in the long run.

Rip is one of the greatest leaders against broscience, but why does he teach the power clean so weird? Any olympic coach will give you different advice about clean technique than what's written in Starting Strength. The most glaring difference is in the bar position at the start of the pull; idk why he has the idea that the initial setup is exactly like a deadlift with the bar over mid-foot. No disrespect, it's just an odd discrepancy.

@@ggrthemostgodless8713 Aren't the mechanics of the power clean the same as in a full clean with the exception of how deeply in the squat position the bar is caught? After all, in olympic lifting the power clean is part of the learning progression that leads to the full clean. Wouldn't it make sense to coach the power clean in SS based on that standard? Just trying to understand Rip's thought process.
