The AMC Rebel is one of the coolest cars from the muscle car era. I finally got my hands on one, will it run and drive after sitting for 35 years? Stick around to the end of the video to find out!

Love the AMC inline 6’s😁 Lots of people forget that “jeep’s 4.0” is actually an amc inline 6, one of the most reliable engines ever produced.

So is Chrysler's 225 Slant Six, just as reliable. Ford's and Chevy's inline 6's just never held up like AMC/Jeep's & Mopar's six-cylinder engines did.

I have a lot of respect for the AMC line and have fond memories of racing against them. All except for the "fishbowl" car. The Javelin, AMX, Rebel Machine, Scrambler Rambler, Matador. All were sleek and if you tweaked them they were no slouch. A close friend of mine had a Gramlin X 304 that we tweaked. It got a Holley Intake & 650 with Hooker underbody headers and a cam. We got a junk yard bell housing and had a local welder move a bolt hole so a Borg Warner T-10 would bolt up, then put the Javelin 10-1/2" clutch in front of it. We shortened the drive shaft to fit and to top it all off, he bought a Hurst Super Shifter for it. We completely changed the personality of that little Gremlin. It pulled great 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear with 3.54 axle, but kind of fell off in 4th. I had a mediocre GTX w/ dana 3.55 4speed and he could almost keep up with me until we hit 4th. So I have a lot of respect for those AMC's. One of my uncles worked for the state of Michigan and they gave him a Rebel one year. I always thought it looked remarkably similar to a 1st gen Roadrunner. I absolutely hated the day when AMC went belly up, and Iacocca got it, but welcomed the Jeep line into the family where once was under the management of Walter P. from about 1911 to 1919 under Buick. That's my story about AMC. ben/ michigan avid Woodward Avenue and Gratiot Avenue racer

As a Ford guy it's nice seeing AMCs getting some love and I think they are very under-rated. My dad has a restored 1969 AMC AMX and my friend has a 1982 AMC Eagle SX4 with a 304 V8 swapped into it then an 82 Eagle Wagon for parts (it may also be revived one day)

Love the Rebel. I truly hope you can get this one fixed up really well. My great uncle bought a 1968 Rebel wagon with the same inline 6 engine band new from Andy Egan Rambler in the Tacoma area. After he passed away in the early 1980's, dad bought the car from our aunt and gave the car to his brother who was in desperate need of a car. Dad almost kept it and gave him our 1975 Toyota Corolla wagon. That inline 6 was getting 25mpg! Fast forward 10 years and we got the car back from dad's brother. The transmission had gone out. We got the car running again and restored it. That thing was great! Didn't get the mileage it did after carb rebuild but you could fairly easily fit 4 people across those bench seats. I wish dad had kept it but he insisted on selling it because it was a "worthless station wagon". The kid that bought it wrecked it beyond repair!! I so miss that car. Dad said the Rebel V8 cars were real movers. He had a '67 Cougar that could beat almost anything out there but he said the Rebels would give him a run for his money.

It looks like a Plymouth, even has Chrysler rims. Sounds like my grandmothers '68 Rambler 440 American wagon. Except hers had a 199 6 cylinder. I remember it well. It was fire engine red with red interior. I grew up in the 80s so that was our main car. It was a little faded and scratched up, with a driver side purple fender that some shop didn't color match, but I loved that car. She bought it new in November of '67 and paid $2900 cash for it. It was a showroom car too and the last car she bought new. Anytime something needed to be fixed on it, my mother would do. Starter, brakes, shocks, leaf springs, flywheel, ball joints, etc. I always remember when it broke down or needed to be worked on. Mostly good memories of it. I would love to find one, along with a 1970 Hornet wagon too, but they are stupid expensive. Glad you got that Rebel running, it sounds fantastic. Keep that engine, it's too good to replace.

Dylan, I am a HUGE A.M.C. fan first car at 16 was a 1964 Rambler Classic 550 4door with a 6cylinder and a 3 speed automajik ...lol.... and learned to drive on my dad's 65 Rambler Classic 550 station wagon with a 287 V8 and the same 3 speed auto. I saw near the beginning of the video, when you were in the field rescuing this very cool Ambassador, that there was also an one of the all-time COOLEST cars made, not just by A.M.C., but by any of the North American car companies, an A.M.C. Marlin, the much sexier cousin to the Mopar Barracuda of that middle 60's era... did you do the absolute RIGHT thing and pick it up as well as the Ambassador?... and if I'd watched 5 minutes more, I would have heard you say you were "coming back" for the Marlin....lmao.

This is my thoughts Mr. McCool; there aren't many of these Rebel left at all in the entire country. I would remove and replace the rusted out sections like you did with your Challenger. It will take awhile but you'll be able to find the parts, like the seats, a factory radio, front fenders, rear leaf springs, rear frame rails, etc. As far as the drivetrain you could remove THE 232 IN-LINE SIX and install an AMC 304 C.I. V8

You should take out the seats and remetal the floors. Then reapohlster the back seat and put a split bench seat back into the front. You'll thank me later. Fix the back frame with new metal, for structural support. Fix the holes in the fenders. Pretty much just make it structurally sound. CLEAN THE WINDOWS. Not trying to tell you what to do, just want you to be safe. Since it's been sitting for 35 years, you might want to check all the bearings. Definitely put some oil with the right zinc additives, so as not to spin a rod bearing. Etc. Love this kind of content, just want you to be safe for yourself and everyone else on the road.

The heart of the AMC that you were trying to do CPR on is the Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, and I guess AMC indestructible slant six engine, or as Josh Dillon calls it "the leaning tower of power". I call it indestructible because I and my siblings tried. My parents had six kids. In my teens, (I'm 68 today) there were three or four of us driving at any given time. To provide vehicles for that herd, my dad would go to the naval auctions at Great Lakes Naval Station and bid on the "not running" Plymouth Valiants. We would drive those things into the ground. (I wrecked two of them) Dad would pull the engines out of the wrecks and go back to the auction. So dad always had two or three functioning slant sixes on the floor of his garage. I can't tell you how many Valiant bodies we went through, but I'm pretty sure there were no more than six or seven slant sixes. After Dad passed, we kids cleared out his storage areas and found a slant six waiting for it's next body. We smiled.

I was waiting for you to get to this one. I have a 69 Rebel 2dr. SST just like yours. Mine is green with a yellow top. It has the 290 v8 with factory air. I'm not sure what your plans are with it, but most parts are not reproduced. Ask me how I know.l 😆 it too bad you didn't get your hands on the another parts car. That will be your only way to get replacement floors. Unless you make them yourself. The floors are not reproduced, along with the gas tank. Hopefully, yours is good. Same with windshield and rear window. I couldn't even fund the drums for the front. So I decided to convert to disc. There are other parts as well. The AMC Rebel is a unique and quirky car, but you will be the only one at the car with a Rebel. Its fun to watch people walk by with a look of confusion on their faces. It's a good conversation, starter, for sure. Anyway, there are AMC vendors out there with some nice parts. I can't wait to see more of the Rebel.

There's some days I thank the Lord more for the small things than the big. Today I'm grateful for Dylan McCool's channel! But wait. There's more. I think a very cool car like the Rebel (I had a 66 Rambler when I was 18 lol) should be fitted with an engine that is deserving of it's stature! Like an N54! That's right another straight 6 engine! Only this time it's one that will give out Huge power on demand (as long as it's not throwing codes LOL). But honestly why is it that these cars only get like a Small block Chevy or a Ford Windsor 351 or maybe if there's even one to find a 401ci V8 AMC. (Not likely). SO go get a whole engine and drive train from a car there are plenty of around and get the whole computer and wiring harness (Can Bus as well) and throw it into this type of beauty!!! You'll want to keep the BMW ignition and the gauges at least for the install and shove them behind the Rambler dash! But it would fire right up and BOOM Huge HP. Well maybe after a little bit of Tuning but hey why not blow some people away?? Well on second thought maybe the N54 or any other Six Cylinder from our modern cars isn't going to work. After looking a bit harder at the space under that hood I don't think you could get one in there. It look far too small. The 3 liter straight 6 engines of our day are BIG sized engines compared to even the 4.2 6 cyl of the days gone by. But maybe it is just the way the video makes it look?? I don't know.

I was hoping the rear glass wasn’t gunna blow out while you were driving. While Briar was power washing, it lifted. The burnout at the end was awesome for a one tire fryer 😄👍

I had a 1974 AMC HORNET Sportabout Wagon painted army Green with wood paneling. It had the 258 straight 6, and my father and I drove it down the Alaskan highway in winter from Anchorage, Alaskan to Denton ,Texas in 1986 with perfect performance!!!! The heater was hot as hell, we got fantastic gas mileage, !

On any old engine that's been sitting for a long time you should pour some oil into the cylinders or the intake to get the rings to seat and if you think the compression still isn't good mix some graphite with the oil it'll stick to the scratches in the cylinder walls. Take the plugs out and spin the engine too.

I LOVE AMC Rebels, the Rebel 'The Machine' is an all-time dream car of mine, and I am honestly rather jealous that you managed to get your hands one of these gems. Hopefully you make this into an absolute street machine, because you just don't see these at all!

My first car in 1984 was a 67 AMC Ambassador 990 sedan. It had a 290 V8, and yes the tops of the front fenders were rusty. My dad said they all did it. Interior was mint though.paid 250 bucks for it. I wish I still had it.

These 232 (3.8L) "Torque Command" 1 barrel inline sixes produced 145 HP and 215 lb ft of torque and were an extremely smooth engine that was very reliable.
