" Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has [l]been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him." -James 1:12
The Roadrunner is one of the most iconic muscle cars of all time. And somehow I managed to find an incredibly clean and complete example. This 1971 Plymouth came from the factory with a 383 HP, 727 HD transmission, green paint, and green interior. We dive into this time capsule and uncover all the secrets it holds, including figuring out: will it run?

It's my dream Mopar. I looked at a green on green satellite sebring years ago, but the A pilar was rotted from the vinyl top. Should've bought it in retrospect.

I'm always amazed that even your basic muscle cars had bench seats, column shift, some even had drum brakes! Here in Australia what were our muscle cars even the basic ones had power boosted disc brakes, floor shift and bucket seats.

@@alwynemcintyre2184yup let's talk the era of muscle cars and options. All big threeroduced basic cars with no optionß ps pb discs auto were some basic add ONS but for cost. Conscious teen buyer could jack up price grand which was alot in those. Dollars...plus wny buy a basic Camaro or satellite wheñ you could spend a few bucks more get an option group on an upgraded car like a road runner. Or Camaro RS. Expensive options like bucket seats air consoles were budget busters and very rarely checked off so bench seats. Floor shifts upgrade motors no air drum brakes no ps. Etc were the formula for speed..big deal in 68-72. Was to order 6cyl. Nova then add a 350small block. Came with a 4speed and a posi rear...new owner kid does engine work adds intake 4bbl. Headers Hurst floor shifter and other stuff this. Saves bucks on insurance rates because you got a v8nova man shift for cheep and no SUPER SPORT LISTING ON VIN AND SAVE BUCKS ON INSURANCE COSTS....SIMPLE ECONOMICS

THIS was my HS daily driver, same ugly green paint even. The 383 was kinda fast but it handled like a battleship but oh the memories made in her. One day she threw a rod and her saga came to an end, I even held a ceremony. Looking forward to seeing this project.

Dylan your excitement is palpable. in 1981 I bought a 68 GTX special order 4sp from a pal who drove it up from Santa Maria Island in Florida. Fully optioned with maroon buckets and a center console, no rust 88k miles, needed paint and valve seals. Drag racing on my home street a 71 charger he pulled in front of me as I passed him and bent the hood fender grill and k frame. Dad made me sell it after I tossed it up on blocks and started peeling off broken parts. I was 17. Even smashed it would be big dollars today. I'm glad for you way to go....

I own a 1971 Road Runner which I purchased in 1975. It's very similar to yours but with some exceptions. It's orange with a black vinyl roof and black interior with a full bench seat. My 383 came with a Mallory dual point distributor and a 750 Holley. I have a 4 speed with a pistol grip shifter. I also have the same 323 differential. The biggest difference is the rear bumper. Mine has a '72. I don't know how that's possible, but I like it. I think it really makes the car look unique. Of course, over the years, I done a few upgrades. I love my "Rowdy Road Runner".

For someone whos dad bought the first one in Canada (376 car made), the original wheel/tire was a f70-14 Polyglass tire. You had to check off the option to go to a 15 inch wheel, and rally's were an option. Standard was a 3 speed manual and the Torqueflight was an option. Standard carb was I believe a 550 CFM Holly. As for the strobe stripe, when my old man picked the car up in August of 70, that stripe was not yet available, in fact the only thing was the "roadrunner die cast emblem that they drilled holes for in the quarter panel right where the "roadrunner" in the decal lines up with. Man, that gear reduction Chrysler starter had a sound all its own lol..383 in my opinion was THE best engine Chrysler made back then. Powerful, and indestructible.

This reminds me of my father's '68 Roadrunner, even though it's a different body style. It was Orange and had a black hood with an air grabber that popped up when you smashed the throttle. He'd put a hundred dollar bill on the dashboard and said that I can have it if I can grab it. Problem was, he'd smash the throttle every time I reached for it and it threw my tiny ten year old self into the seat because it had so much torque. He still has the car, original motor, trans, and paint. I think that's called numbers matching. I don't remember what motor it has because it stays in the garage which is always locked. I know it has a posi-rear and short gears because it's at around 4000 rpm at 110 mph. It could have a hemi in it for all i know, but I think it's a 440.

Just the beginning of the video here Mr. McCool, but I'm thinking the initial moral of this story as of loading the vehicle onto your trailer is no matter what is expected, plan for the most difficult retrieval every time. Straps, chains, wheel dollys, good jacks etc., maybe even a steering wheel puller if so inclined, or a 'master' spring key maybe to get that steering unlocked. Lesson learned I hope! edit: Well, one thing to consider: if you didn't have to struggle sometimes how would you know what fun really was? : )

Awesome!!! I started with a 1971 B5 Blue 383 Satellite Sebring Plus with a Roadrunner Hood 23 years ago. Too much rust to save. Switched to a GF7 Green 1972 Satellite Sebring Plus 2 years later. Really long story, but 408 Magnum Stroker, lots of fun. Being in WI just got it out of the garage. Split the riding season between it and Harleys!! Can't wait to see more of this one.

Lil story of when I was about 16...was with my dad picking my brother up from work in an old F-150...Wouldn't start and we thought the solenoid went out so I got out with a screwdriver to jump the solenoid...Soon as I touched the contacts the it sparks really big and the battery literally blew in half...Starter was shorted! Remember that when you're standing over the battery like that... Luckily I closed my eyes when it sparked real bad and the acid blew all over my face ...my brother jumped out and poured a mountain dew on my face to wash the acid off and by the time I got 20 minutes home my shirt fell apart in the front from the chest down...

What a great roadrunner Dylan! Seems like a very solid car, Seems to run surprisingly well and sound good for having sat so many moons! My old buddy has several mopars including a cpl hang 10's and darts. Best of all a 71 orange charger. It's a 440 six pack, pistol grip 4 speed and has a sure grip dana 60 with 3.54's. He even added a fully functional air grabber, best part and looks so cool!!! Would be cool to see u work on a hang 10 with their surfing decals and orange shag carpet. I love the 71 demons, my brother had one, had a 340 4 speed and an 8 3/4 sure grip with 3.55's. It was yellow with black interior, I drove it a cpl times and.msn was it fun to drive and was quite fast for a 340. Look forward to seeing you guys fix this old hot rod up!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Dylan, the 15 inch Rally wheels in the car are not the original wheels. 70, 71, and 72 cars came with 15x7 wheels optional and darned few came with them. The odds of a 383 car having them is slim. The 15x 6 1/2 was put on cars from 75 and newer, such as the Cordoba based "Charger Daytona". The giveaway from a distance is that only three holes are drilled out to mount the hub caps. A very bad thing. I recommend you drill two more to mount the hubcaps since even five are marginal. I would say the 14 inch Rally wheels were the ones the car was built with. You can find a build sheet hopefully. Check to confirm that is a 14 x6 and not a 14 x 5 1/2. Oh, I think you certainly should use the 15 x 6 1/2 set with whatever caps you have a full set of and prefer and I recommend a 225 70 15 or 235 70 15 tire. Not a 60 series tire since any one that fits properly on a 6 1/2 inch wheel is too short to look correct. I prefer the round cone type caps to the acorn type. And prefer the light argent to dark argent, but I have never owned a full set of the dark argent ones since they are pretty rare. PS, the ones on your 14 inch wheel are light argent in color which came only on a 70 while a 71 has a dark color. But that isn't cast in stone.

Speaking of the Carter AVS. I actually owned one. When I had my 74 Dart Sport, I traded it for a 76 Power Wagon. Well, when I was taking the trade, I and the feller who owned the truck discussed the carb situation. I had the option to take the Holly he had and pay a little on top or straight trade with a carb he had laying around. Well, it turned out later on. I looked up the casting number for the AVS, and it came off a 1970 340. It was off of a 70 Challenger or Cuda. I kick myself in the butt every day for not swapping it out and keeping it because now it has a piece broken off one of the corners, and it's sitting out the elements all corroded and such. Guess that happens when a guy who doesn't know much about Mopars and ruins a good ole 340 AVS.

Cool find for ya Dylan and good video. FYI- on the front bumper, there's a hard rubber strip in the middle. That is known as a bumper/crash guard some might call it. Its "supposidly" for a frontal crash ir even grocery carts at the store to protect the bumper🤔.That is a rarity on these cars and even so, if the rear had one too. KEEP THAT. Also, those are dual "turn down" exhaust too. The other kind was the "machine gun tips". Yes, I have a '71 and was born in October of '70 1:02:20

@@crashsroadrunnergarage8612 Yes, the rubber strips on 71's were very rare. Much more common on 70's.

The decorator tips were optional but were block in some years in California because of "drive by noise" regulations. I wonder if Dylan's car has a code N95 for California on the Fender tag.

Chrysler used Holley 4160 type carbs from 1968 to 1972 on certain big blocks, usually of the non Magnum types but also on all 440 Magnums and non Magnums in 1972. They were not well received at the the time. Bowl leaks and warpage, leaks, and other problems led to an edict that they could be service warranty replaced with Carters from the previous model year but the same application. So, a 68 Chrysler 300 with a 440 would get a AFB from a 1967 300 440 and a 72 Road Runner GTX 440 would get an AVS from a 1971 440 GTX. I had both of these done before I got the cars. On the other hand, I owned a 72 with the original Holley and it was not a problem at all. If I had to replace a carb on Dylan's car, I would consider a Holley 1850 or 3310 aftermarket carb, or possibly a 3310 with 1850 fuel bowls swapped on.

In 1973 I ordered a OLDS 442 emerald green w white strips, reminds me of that car as I checked with Plymouth dealer on roadrunner but the 442 was much cheaper [ Actually the only performance car that was cheaper than the 442 was a stripped down Pontiac GTO] GREAT VIDEO as always

My favorite is a 1970 runner. My friend bought one in 78 , I was to young to drive but we partied and raced through our city. Full of kids up to no good. I know you've got a 70 satellite kicking around waiting patiently. A superbird clone is my dream for that one.

Did I see a blue 1971 Plymouth Scamp in the background when you told the back story of the Roadfunner? I had one of those (same color) back in the mid 70's. 318 V-8 with 3 speed on the floor and white interior. Loved it!

I had a 1971 Plymouth Satellite in that same color combo, California car clean/no rust with bucket seats, a console, 727 auto, 383, A/C in 1980. I wish I still had that car. I know, typical regret...
