In today’s episode, we’re stepping inside of an abandoned castle just a few hours outside of Paris, France.
More than likely, this castle was originally built by a French nobleman during the early Renaissance period and at the time, it was one of the largest castles in France, boasting 15 bedrooms, 11 stables, a great dining hall and a full time staff of servants and cooks to work for the family.
Throughout the years, it changed owners many times until it was finally abandoned in 2003 when the last known family to live here, suddenly moved away and left everything inside after the father of the family died.
And for nearly 2 decades, it’s remained a mystery why they left all of their belongings sealed inside this majestic place they once called home. So join me as I venture into this secret 15th century castle to step back in time and find out what’s still left inside.

I am not a religious person, but when you stepped into the chapel, I was awestruck. It was incredibly beautiful. So sad to see these amazing buildings go to ruin. The craftsmanship will never be equaled. Thanks again!

Jeremy - @ 18:09, you were remarking on the bedroom bookcase not having an actual keyhole in the left-hand door. If you look at the right-hand door, you will see an inset box lock mounted into the door. This style of furniture will have deadbolts on the inside of the left-hand door [often top and bottom] and then the right-hand door will have the locking mechanism. Even for the wealthy, this was a cost saving measure, so you only needed one lock instead of two. You'll frequently see these types of deadbolts on French-style double patio doors and only one locking door.

Castles are normally only abandoned due to the upkeep and maintenance. Castles are also very hard to modernize or keep warm... Nonetheless, this place is beyond beautiful

Most are actually manor houses. Either there was no will, no living heirs, or no kin chose not to claim the property rights and responsibilities.

The common fabric pattern is called "toile de jouy" witch means something like fabric from Jouy. That is a town in france.

The room with the sewing machines and books is probably where the servants made clothes for the Family and staff, curtains, upholstery etc. And the desk plus books were probably where either the Housekeeper or Major Domo kept the financial books for the Family, keeping a track on household expenditure and records of things like purchases, repairs and maintenance.

You are assuming that financial hardship equates to less appreciation for history and beauty. That is quite a leap, obviously. It is entirely possible (likely even), that the former owners loved their home enormously and took great pride in everything about the home; but the primary breadwinner died unexpectedly and the remaining family members were unable to pay the maintenance bills.

@@mikejewpants4099 Can appreciate your argument, and agree...you just misunderstood mine. Wasn't referring to the family who lived in it, or the extended family of those people. Was referring to all the people who have money that decide to build new homes and lavish mansions instead of restoring what has already been built. My criticism was that rich people always want something new instead of restoring things that a previous generation worked to build/maintain over long periods of time. A lot of these old mansions look way better than most things we build nowadays...so why not invest in the past and love something other people may have spent decades if not centuries loving before your time. Do you agree?

@@overcomingidiocracy I agree with your sentiment and slightly disagree with your generalization, that "rich people always want something new." I know plenty of affluent people, who love buying older homes and restoring them. I also agree with your sentiment, that this old home has charm and craftsmanship that is unheard of today. The beautiful old doors that are crafted at a curve are especially remarkable.

@@mikejewpants4099 Agreed. That's what I do for a living, 3rd generation contractor. Knowing what it takes to accomplish some of these architectural masterpieces makes me appreciate them that much more. My dream is in a handful of years to buy one and spend my twilight years having it restored. Seems like the appreciation for the past and their accomplishments is lacking in my generation and gen z. Know there are people who do appreciate it, and think it's awesome you know so many people who do...wish more felt the same way. Surprisingly a lot of these properties are fairly inexpensive, it's just the money it would cost to bring them back to life. I personally think it's worth it though

It’s been cleaned up… I’ve seen it with Bros of Decay, Abandoned world explorer and Explomo… as far back as 3 years ago… look it up and you’ll see what I mean… it’s always interesting to see these places from the perspective of different explorers

I think this particular castle may have a semi-caretaker...it's probably being looked after every so often. Might be why people were showing up toward the end of the tour.

Certainly cleaned up. Example is when A.W.E visited the empty window sill in the area by the child's bedroom had a large collection of Furby toys.

Seeing all the black mold throughout the home, it's likely the cost of remediation was too much to bear and the family chose to move on. Also explains why some things were left behind, so as not to contaminate the new home. Just a theory:) Great find, guys, and thanks for the very respectful tour!

ALL castles suffer from mold in France. I know first hand! When you buy a place in France, there is no mold inspection, and no obligation to disclose the mold. I hope Jeremy is doing mold treatment because his health is going to plummet after such exposure.

8:30 it's a testament written in old French. To make it short, the guy was named Claude Maulnori was Lord D'Aubigny and King's Consellor, he ordered masses to be done for his death, and the death of his father and mother (probably living when he died) and also for his spouse.

I've seen a lot of people buying and renovating castles in France. It's a dream for me to own one. I have always been fascinated with the architecture, and appreciated the history behind these castles. It's like reliving the past. Just amazing.

I have seen this explored several times, but I do have to say I really enjoyed yours. I love the way you pay attention to detail, and you work at the history of the places you explore. It was not uncommon for castles or big manners to have their own chapel, and sometimes their own Minister or priest. I’m not sure if that was because of travel, or if the nobles actually had others from their community, come to worship. You were the first person I’ve had mention that there might be a fountain that would’ve been in the front, and that makes a whole Lotta sense, the checkered floor as opposed to the wood floor marks the service areas compared to the family living areas. Such a cool place. I hope they do get to save it! Thank you for the wonderful explore, take care!

The hidden “library” was probably a classroom. Young girls were often taught sewing, explains why there are multiple machines. Would explain all of the pianos throughout, too, since girls were usually taught “softer” things like music and arts and were expected to entertain.

❤❤❤❤❤ I literally am crying right now. The beauty of every room just transports me to when the family lived there. This is by far my ultimate favorite home out of them hundreds that I have seen. Its just so sad that this opulent home has no family to enjoy it and to hear the laughter of children. Mother earth wants this home back. I wish I had them money because I would buy it.

What a beautiful place. A bit surreal with everything still in place. Isn’t it a shame that all the timeless pieces slowly disappear in ruin. I don’t like the thought of someone looting it either. But it would be nice if it could be recovered and put in homes, once again to be loved. Truly grateful all of you escaped unhurt. Scary. 💕🇨🇦

I thought the castle was beautiful in its own right. I did feel sadness as you all walked through it, I believe you had made a comment during your walk around that it was like the castle was just waiting for the family to come back and reclaim it, and I totally agree. I just discovered your channel a couple of days ago and I am loving how you take time to show everything and try to tell the story of the past inhabitants. I would love to see you add an actual historian or student of foreign culture to your group. They could help explain the usage/purpose of the rooms, how the inhabitants might have lived, etc. I do know in the past and even today, the more affluent class had separate rooms for the husband and wife. I think that is what we were seeing in the red bedroom (masculine) and the blue (feminine) bedroom right next to it. This also explains why we see only ladies clothing and accessories in one room and men's in another. Plus, the servants' quarters were decorated according to their station in the home. The more elaborate was the quarters of the long term/more valued servants. Rooms with multiple beds were for lesser maids and wait staff that lived inside the home. Just FYI. You do a great job and I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Hey salut , tu as eu de la chance ce château n'est plus abandonné depuis plus d'un an presque deux en fait. je sais où il se trouve. il est en cours de restauration. beaucoup d'objets ont déjà été retiré par une association et le maire du village voisin. en France on le connait sous le nom de château secret même si depuis il n'est plus si secret. Juj'urbex en a fait une belle vidéo il y a deux ans, je t'invite à regarder tout ce que tu as loupé pendant ta visite . bonne continuation à toi 😀

I am baffled as to why on the world so much Uber expensive and priceless treasures were just abandoned. I do hope it can all be restored. I just came upon one of your videos the other day. You have me hooked!! I felt honored to subscribe. You have such a cool way of walking through these places. You put it all into like a story. Just the way you talk. Soft and like you are respecting the people that owned it. I love how you open doors and drawers. I feel like I am right there with you! I always wanted to be able to go look for these places. As a retired farmer that has health issues I never will, but I can through you! So thank you so much! I really like the way you handle your camera it does not make me dizzy unlike other explorer, and the way you deliver your descriptions in every datails of everthing are clear. It's just amazing.

OMG! The history that's in every shot is absolutely amazing! This was my favorite by far. I imagine the stories and events that have transpired there over the centuries. So incredibly cool! Thanx! Had to add a little note on that stained glass in the chapel. So stunning! I love that it is still intact after all this time.

I really appreciate the respectful reverence you give to the buildings you visit .. it helps us to appreciate them too. I don't know how anyone could graffiti that wall ... they need to have a chat with you! I'm glad you were safe at the end of it all. My greatest fear is also other people. XX

WOW, this place was absolutely gorgeous... the furniture threw out the castle (all the wood work just stunning) even now after the place been abandoned for quite some time it still mind-blowing 🤯👍I checker floors, the rounded doors and the marble fireplaces were absolutely my favorites 👌 The bat scared that life out of me.. 🥴😵😅👍 Lol.. Nice exploration, thank you for sharing 🙂

Hey Jeremy, another WOW video. You are truly "Attention to detail" which all of your viewers just love. This video was exceptional, and really enjoyed each room, especially the last room with the Singers. I have my grandmothers singer, and it still works, but have never used it. Would hate to brake the peddle, probably never replace it. Even still has the oil can and instruction booklet. Its part of my house and my grandmothers past. Always a conversation with friends. Sorry you had that run in with the clan, glad you got away without a hassle. GREAT VIDEO and thank you !

I love the woodwork on all of the furniture, it is all so amazing. The craftsmanship on all of the pieces is magnificent. The library was a fascinating room included oddly with singer sewing machines. I would love to have one of those antique sewing machines. I am not able to do these kinds of tours myself. But I would like to thank you guys for sharing your adventures with me and the world. You have no idea how much enjoyment I get from your videos. You are all a great team together. Please keep your hard work of exploration up. I hope you have safe travels always.

Simply beautiful. I love hearing about the history and who lived there. It’s heart wrenching to see it in disrepair and to hear about looters. I know it’s impossibly expensive to upkeep these massive homes. I wish they could be saved and protected. Breathtaking, Thank you.

It’s just so emotional seeing their belongings left behind and the sadness that must have facilitated everything leading up to the “tragedy”. OH MAN, I am totally amazed by this property. The 1st room with the rounded door is spectacular, the chapel is amazing with a confessional booth and that amazing ceiling. that kitchen is pretty cool. the pieces in this place are beautiful from the furniture to the sculpted woodwork pieces. This adventure is amazing, one of my favorites 'thank you'

I've watched many of your videos. I like to watch before bed. They are very comforting yet sad. The impermanence of life. The energies of those lives come through the screen. Such beauty and such longing to know their lives. I wish there was an invention to replay their lives. So much history to understand. Thank you for these tours. This is the most well-kept abandoned place I have seen. Beautiful! It's odd how some places are dustier then others. They obviously have some money at one time.

Thank you for exploring abandoned places. I miss that from my other explorer's I've followed for years. Not hating on them but I sure miss them traveling, and exploring abandoned. I appreciate you Abandoned Nashville for sticking to exploring abandoned places and not going towards ghost hunting and Halloween stuff. Again not hating but I miss exploring abandoned places.
