This looks like it's underneath the 8th avenue line (A, C and E trains) beneath the Port Authority bus terminal. There's also an abandoned train station underneath City Hall at the Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall station (4, 5 and 6 trains) which is more or less alongside the Chambers st. station (J and Z trains). New York City has a few abandoned subway stations and tunnels. It's quite fascinating.

Other than the blue plywood walls, missing signs and lots of dust, it looks the same as it did in 1983 when it was open to the public as the only way to go between Uptown and Downtown. If I'm not mistaken, just one stop north of here is the lower platform used in the 1990 film GHOST. The scene where Sam's ghost learns how to move objects with help from the homeless ghost. Just under the still operational 50th Street Station on the A/C/E line. Of course, you can tell they used fake tile signs making the Station seem like it served 42nd Street. Even the old tin signs with white backgrounds and black lettering reading "42" can be seen on the pillars as Sam kicks a can!

I believe that Roosevelt Avenue trackway you're referring to was built in anticipation of extending the QBL to the Rockaways using a new right-of-way to get to the existing LIRR tracks and continuing on that line. It was part of the so-called "Second System" designed in 1929 before the depression and never carried further. At one time, there was a stub terminal at Roosevelt Ave., complete with a tiled wall. There are also fly-overs where "through trains" would have gone directly to the Rockaways.

When the IND was built in the 30s, that extra track was the special events track("events" being a scheduled train to Aqueduct Racetrack, another station with a singular purpose and platform). Helped having a thru track if something happened to the main line. I became a C/R in 1983. Believe the track was out of passenger service by then. Never took any type of equipment through there. By retirement in 2014, it was in serious disrepair and blocked off with the RR tie and red banker lights. Of course, like all abandoned space in the subway, it was taken over by MOW(Maintenance of Way). They should be called MOWlocks. Believe it or not, not much to steal, all that crap lying around has no practical use outside its specific transit role. You can have that copier if you can get it out of there😂 Several things were missed mentioning here. Those yellow swing gates on the platform are one of a kind. Separating the paying special passengers, from the people just using the underpass from up and downtown. The number font on the walls(and on the platform stanchion enamel plates) correspond to the 6th ave. line, not the 8th ave. Sad they cut the Flushing line thru it. If you can somehow take a pic of the "42nd STREET" wall mosaic, also in a color scheme NO ONE else has, it would be $$$$, cuz no historical society there seems to have one.

@Ass_Burgers_Syndrome3 ай бұрын
From Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/57th_Street%E2%80%93Seventh_Avenue_station Proposed extension North of this station are tunnel stub headings running straight from the local tracks[24] for a proposed line under Central Park West or Morningside Avenue, that would have terminated either at 145th Street or 155th Street. When the BRT / BMT was building the Broadway line as part of the Dual Contracts, the company also wanted to be awarded the Central Park West / Eighth Avenue route, which was on the planning boards at that time. The company figured that if they built ramps from the Broadway line that could naturally be extended to an Eighth Avenue line, they would get a toehold on being awarded that line, rather than lose out to the IRT, the only other subway operator when the Dual Contracts were built.[25] The BMT / BRT never built that line for various reasons including the bankruptcy of the company after the Malbone Street Wreck and Mayor Hylan's plan to include the Eighth Avenue / CPW route in the IND system. The ramps were built but never used for revenue service. They were eventually used for storage until the tracks were disconnected. The disused trackways for the proposed line ramp up and run for about 500 feet (150 m). The ramp on the northbound side has a Maintenance-of-Way shed built on it,[26] and the trackway on the southbound side also has a storage shed sitting in it, just north of where the local tracks come in, but this shed is few hundred feet north of the shed on the opposite trackway of the other side of the tunnel. Some of the actual rails remain and can be seen from passing express/63rd Street Line trains, but are covered by many years of dirt. The never-used trackways curve slightly west before ending
