This time on Sally's Speed Shop we head to Indiana with the service truck with plans to revive a 1976 Gremlin that we bought sight unseen from Kevin at ‪@brokengear2476‬! The car was last on the road in Bon Carbo, Colorado back in 1991. Kevin bought the car and had it shipped to his place just outside of Ft. Wayne, Indiana before selling this gem to us. I roped in my buddy Cale from ‪@camracing‬ to help with this project and drive one of the vehicles back to Georgia with me should we be able to get the little Gremlin running. Stay tuned for plenty of surprises including the biggest mouse nests I've ever seen as well as mouse turds for days! The story of this little Gremlin that could is far from over so stay tuned for Parts 2 and 3 of a legendary revival and adventure with this quirky automobile!

When I was in my 20s in the 70s a friend of mine had a Gremlin with a 304 V8 with a 3 speed manual transmission. Who ever owned it before put headers, and an aluminum intake, and 4 barrel. That little car screamed.! It would burn the tires through 1st, 2nd, and leave a 2 foot long scratch in 3rd. Those wheels, and tires look really cool!

As I look at these Gremlin videos I realize the 74 Gremlin X I had in 1973-76 was really a top of the line Gremlin. It had the rally steering wheel, rear wind visor, locking gas cap, and Gremlin emblems and badges everywhere. It had more issues than any other car I've ever had. Wish I had it back.

When I was in high school, my girlfriend had a Gremlin (which was a lot nicer than my 1959 Chevy Bel Air). It was red with gold trim, and she just had to show me that it would do 100 mph (indicated). One of the scariest incidents of my young life at the time! Looking forward to the next installments...

If you don't know AMC, they were great cars. Very well built, reliable, and comfortable to drive. I used them as a road salesman and put over 100K miles with never a major mechanical problem. I had a Matador that the first repair was at 107K miles and it was a easy to replace water pump. The only water pump I had to replace. I wish they were still for sale.

I beg to disagree with you. I had a 1976 AMC Hornet (which I think had a Ford 6 cylinder in it) that drove me crazy in hot weather. I'd go out to start if after it sat in a parking lot and about half the time, the distributor cap would just blow up and pop off and I'd have to open the hood and put it back on. After a while, the metal clip on one side got a bit sprung and stretched, so it became hard and harder to put the cap back on. No idea what caused it to explode off the distributor but maybe some gases got in it from somewhere and the spark ignited those gases? Then later on, I had just made a 90 degree turn from one highway to another and the engine made a tremendous racket for about 5 seconds, really loud clanking and clattering. It then quit and would not restart, so I thought the engine blew up on me, maybe a connecting rod or something broke. I sat there for about 5 minutes, trying to think of what I was going to do because this was super way before cell phones. As I considered a long walk to the nearest farm house to use their phone, for the heck of it I turned the key and she started right back up!! And I drove it for several more years!! Maybe a valve lifter got stuck? I'll never know. Also, I had to replace the carburetor float about every two years, it would get soaked, sink too far down and the car would run rich. So my memories of the only AMC car I ever owned are really bad. I feel it was a real pile of you-know-what.

@danielheartsill4269

@@markr.1984 I remember the distributor cap problem. It was a bad vacuum advance module on the side of the distributor letting gas fumes into the cap and a spark from the points would cause the cap to pop off. The engine was never a Ford product but the distributor was. I did have the same problem but AMC took care of it. I put over a hundred thousand miles on several of them and never a major problem. In those days you couldn't buy a car that didn't have something go wrong along the way. The motor was an AMC seven main bearing motor and was a very good motor, better than most six cylinders at the time. The only one that was as good was the Chrysler slant six that was also very good.

Mahalo for yet another adventure for me to follow! You folks are wonderful. When I was your age, I loved running my ricer on the Autobahn. I would not have given a...thing...like this a first look, much less a second look. You have made me appreciate these American classics from American Motors. These things appear indestructible to me. To be fair, the very first car I legally ever drove by myself (like...with my very own no-foolin' driver's license) was a rented AMC Concord that was loaded with luxuries. That car felt so much sturdier than anything I'd ever ridden in before save for a few military vehicles. Your adventures reveal to me that I missed out on a whole set of different adventures I could have had. Please continue to stay safe and enjoy your journeys to the fullest. Aloha!

I used to work on these turds at a dealership. When they get older the front cross member sags, the spring towers lean in at the top; they need a wheel alignment every 6 months, new door hinge bushings once a year (the originals are nylon; replacements are bronze) and if you don't replace them in time the hinges will need replacement.
@SallysSpeedShop

Now that's interesting, I've never heard of the first one happening. This thing for sure needs some new hinge bushings on the driver's door though!

@@SallysSpeedShop You won't know the cross member has sagged until you remove it and try to put it back on. You may need a portapower to get it back in. The cars handling and alignment issue could probably be improved by fabricating a spring tower brace (going over the engine from tower to tower) to stiffen it up. Lots of modification potential in these cars.

"Jerry" rigged fuel system! Aaahhahaha! That thing reminds me of my 63 f100 which I neglected for 28 years and then proceeded to fire right up and needed only an accelerator pump diaphragm and some plugs. Lol, great little cars!❤

@@SallysSpeedShop I have! The one you got from the roadikill crew right? Just found out you had a channel or I would of been here sooner. Even with the single barrel and no spray, it can light the tires. About to try the jeep 4.0 head swap with efi and maybe spray it if I my anti lag experiment doesn't work. Goal is 10's 😎 Just planning the route after I button up a 302 swapped celica and a volvo 240.

soy based wiring insulation didn't start until 2000. before that it was petroleum based plastics, and even farther back before oil based was cloth insulation

Awesome revival! I can't believe how solid the car was under all the mouse nests. You have a nasty noise going on that sounds like your lens cap or something rubbing the microphone. It makes it painful to listen with headphones on. I've heard it in your other videos too but it sounds really bad around 47:45

Stop giving Kevin such a hard time. According to Peg from Zip Ties and Bias Plies, you are supposed to give all engines the ketchup on start up or he can't be your friend. For those that don't understand, the Ketchup is red. Mustard is yellow. So Ketchup is red line. Your next investment should be a Pacer.
