In today's video we'll take a look at this 1993 Corvette 40th Anniversary Six Speed Coupe that has been sitting unused and improperly stored for many years.
Watch as I discuss how such a desired piece of machinery falls between the cracks and ends up being discarded like yesterday's trash. I'll also point out the telltale signs I used to identify and verify that was in fact a low mileage Corvette in spite of how bad the exterior looked.

This video is right on so many levels, a lot of cool cars from the 80s and 90s just get ditched because a lot of people don't know how to work on them which is sad because its nothing to be afraid of, I am almost 20, don't even live in the US so have it hard with parts but I bought a 88 Firebird survivor and this is my first project car. You can figure out everything if you want it enough, the people who ditched these cars simply weren't eager enough so these cars sit and wait for somebody who is

Absolutely There are deals to be had out there I picked up a Corvette for 5,500 and it had 70,000 miles on the odometer did some minor maintenance change all the fluids complete tune up new fuel pump and the thing is running like a champ right now. Put 10k miles on it in 2 years and it feels great driving and enjoying it .I can manage 24 miles per gallon on the highway is the best I can do if I keep it around 70 to 75 mph. It's a 1990 corvette

As someone who is pretty in tune with Corvettes and "projects" I can say you are very spot on concerning your assessments. I frequently get asked about Corvettes and the purchasing of them. My common answer is that I use a 2/3 rds. rule in my purchase assessment. 2/3 rds. need to be good upon purchase if not walk, Meaning good body / good interior / bad engine drivetrain. Good engine / drivetrain, good interior. bad body. ETC. Now there sometimes are added factors such as rarity, pedigree, previous ownership, celebrity ownership ETC. But as a rule, if 2/3 rds. are good you can still come out on your investment to make money as long as you know your budget and follow it. This I have found out works overall for any vehicle from Corvettes - 4wd trucks - muscle cars- passenger cars. At least it has for me for 50 + yrs. Tux Hadler / Simply Corvettes...

It's not a terribly bad system to work with. It doesn't have as much real time data for you to work with like an OBD2, but if you are familiar with OBD1 it's a fairly easy process to determine which component or wiring harness is at fault. It's also much simpler than the OBD2 Can-Bus system that utilizes about 1000 pounds of wiring😁.

Oldsmobile Trofeo. I think there was a Toranado edition as well. Those front lights have louvers that flip up and down. It shared its platform with the Eldorado and Riveria. I love those generations of GM cars. They were packed with technology.
@VetteSource
@VetteSource Жыл бұрын
Yep, it's an odd thing. The car is actually a Toronado, with the Trofeo being the upscale trim package with ground effects and covered headlights. For some reason in 1990 it's only badged as a Trofeo on the rear quarters with an Oldsmobile badge on the taillight panel. A Toronado badge isn't on the car anywhere. Then in 91 and 92 they started putting Toronado badges back on it. Maybe the Trofeo badge confused buyers too much. Like you said, these cars are loaded with cool tech that is used to this day and make excellent touring cars.

Great car! If i was you, i would put some effort into trying to repair that BCM. THere are several mail-order shops that repair them, or maybe even a local shop. Not only would it make your life easier- it would greatly increase the value of the car having the correct mileage displayed. IMO As a C4 ZR-1 owner, it really warms my heart to see these cars get saved. I feel like the C4 is very very underrated.
@VetteSource
@VetteSource Жыл бұрын
Underrated they are. It's like the worst kept secret among the Corvette fans. I have heard about the BCM rebuilders and was starting to look into seeing if there was a way to recover and save the mileage stored in the MEM-CAL, but luckily it started working again after keeping a trickle charge on the battery all week. With a functional BCM, it's simply a matter of getting the fuel and spark back online and addressing any small residual issues. I'll have an update soon showing how many miles are on it and highlighting the next steps I'll be taking. Thanks for the comments and have a great Thanksgiving👍.

There really aren't that many of them considering the current population between Canada/USA/Mexico and the few scattered around the world. I've seen a few in the UK. Even more rare when you get down to specific years. E.g. only 50k 1984s. Only x-number of those crossfire smallblock 350s. Price has to go up from rock bottom 5k.. in 10 years our cars will be 10-20k easily.. 40 years from now could be 100k with inflation.

_You're absolutely one hundred percent spot on about the car. This ruby was maybe 45K when new in '93(in today's dollar that's about $92,000)! For those that don't know, the average car buyer today can't afford that kind of money to buy a vehicle. Somewhere prior to the market crash in '08, C4's were collected, driven, saved, coveted, and yes cherished. But with all used cars, they tend to lose their cache. (This car is absolutely a fully loaded 1993 40th anniversary Ruby. Sport seats, ride control, and a ZF-6 speed...I almost passed out at just how nice the interiior is too. And the car has the original Eagle GS-Cs on it)! What a perfect find, and I know you'll bring this car back 100 percent. Great channel, and really great video today. The carfax will be a telltale sign of the mileage most certainly. (The car parked in your yard looks like a 1989 Olds Trofeo. Prior to this model year the car was badged as a Tornado Trofeo)._

Luckily, I've had a fortunate break through with the car this week, and will share some exciting news about it in the next video. Good guess on the Toronado. It's actually a 1990 Toronado Trofeo edition, the first year of the lengthened body style. Funny thing is the 1990 Toronado is only badged "Trofeo" on the quarters and "Oldsmobile" on the taillight panel, but doesn't have any "Toronado" emblems on it. Older EFI scares tons of people to work on, its not crazy hard to work on. Just it gives you basic info and you gotta make educated guesses at what is going on. I picked my vette up cheap because of them swapping to a carb but VATS still telling them nope. I got that bypassed, and added aftermarket EFI and got it sorted. It still looks bad, but that can be changed with enough time and effort.

Bought a '94 vette cheap. Most of the time it ran fine but every couple weeks it would just die going down the road. If it cooled down overnight it would start and run fine again. Chevy dealer had it a whole week and found nothing. Turns out it was a bad coolant sensor that quit working from time to time. Yup... a bad sensor will kill that motor. I lucked out and saw a code that for what ever reason did not store... 142lo. Impractical, uncomfortable, gas hog.. and I love it. Hello Brian nice video again it's very sad about that 93 Corvette anniversary my guess is you have to have a garage to really take care of a Corvette to keep it in good condition the Corvette you're showing here the 93 anniversary you said in the video you can no longer figure out the mileage that's on it at this moment does that mean you have to sell the vehicle as a salvage title if you do sell it? And this is the kind of car that I want for daily driver keep the good videos coming and keep living the Corvette lifestyle and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family thank you for your time you have a good day
@VetteSource

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family as well, Kenny. Luckily the BCM began working after a few days of leaving a trickle charge on the battery so I'll have an cool update for you guys in the next video. If you're dealing with an older car with an electronic odometer you can title and register them as "Exempt" or "True Mileage Unknown". The salvage designation is really only for a car that's been involved in an accident that involves the insurance making a loss payoff against it.

They did have the GSCs on the V8 powered f bodies. I bought a new 94 z28 and that's the tires on it from the factory. Some years they were an option if you didn't want the speed governed. They were really cool tires for the time but very expensive for the time. I also remember looking at a 40th edition in a dealership and a dealer asked me if I was interested in buying 1 and I told him that I couldn't afford it because I was only 17 at the time! Maybe 16! Just found your channel and appreciate the content. I'm a 68 year old Houston man and have decided to get a Vette, I'm thinking a 94-96 would fit the bill based on many you tube channels I've seen. I do plan to drive the car frequently, not a garage queen. Couple of questions: what do you consider as to max mileage for consideration (I know there are numerous factors) and where do you find yours? Looks to me they are fairly scarce around here. Thanks
@VetteSource
@VetteSource Жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad your enjoying the videos. You're correct, the 94-96 C4's are the best ones to buy for a first time buyer. By this point they were well sorted out, and even though they have little quirks that need attention from time to time are great road cars. I would look for one with around 90-120K miles. These still have plenty of life in them, and as long as the maintenance has been somewhat kept up with will be fairly reliable. Also, due to them being "high" mileage cars you can find these at very reasonable price points. Of course, expect to pay a little premium for six speed or highly optioned cars. Right now the best resource for finding local cars is still FB and CL. I also look at ebay motors to see what pops up for sale from individuals. Let me know how the search goes, and have a great Thanksgiving👍.

There are so many Corvettes that it doesn't make sense to restore a beat up one when you can spend a little more to get a good one that's already running and driving. Spend your time enjoying it rather than fixing it. If it was a rare car then it would make more sense.
@VetteSource
@VetteSource Жыл бұрын
Funny thing is this model, while not especially rare is difficult to find in decent shape to potentially use as a driver. Many of them were put away in storage and used sparingly like this one was. All Collectors series Corvettes through the generations maintain a certain following, even if they're just a paint and interior package, so there will always be a captive audience for them. In the case of this 40th Anniversary model, it is mostly original with extremely low mileage, and will make an excellent daily driver for many years to come. Spending money on it is more for the fun of bringing it back to life than trying to squeeze a profit out of it.

So you said "abandoned". But a truly abandoned car doesn't have a title. You showed a car you said you hauled out of the woods. How would you get a title for that?
