Best thing was the wife being patient. This is how builds go sometimes. Two steps forward one step back. My advice is if you are have trouble getting this basic engine going then an engine swap might be even more of a headache. Make that a trusty ride, learn as you go and stay away from all the aftermarket junk for now.

The cool thing about these old trucks is you can do what you want to it. Many people will have different opinions, engine swap or leave it stock. Its your truck so do what you want to with it. The only advice I can give is come up with a plan of what you want and stick to it.

Put a timing light on it, set your timing. then adjust the carb. run your mixture screw all the way in then back it out a turn and a half. That's a good starting point. Make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks anywhere. Spray some carb cleaner around any joints or gaskets you suspect. If it changes how it runs then you found a leak. These are extremely simple and reliable engines. A little more work and it'll be running great. Even if it is a head gasket, it's an afternoons work with a helper.

I am seventy three as of tuesday and pulled wrenches since dad started me and were talking preteen like as your oldest and when I could figure out how to size wrenches and bolts together, he made me tear down the first engine, a junk one but I had to an mean had to learn, it was not are you interested son... learn or my tail was on fire and by the time I was fifteen, I had a full time job for/with my dad and I am grateful for the learning just not his gentle persuasion inspiring shake every bone in my little body. Yes it was child abuse but my dad didn't know how long but just that he was dying and I was not aware of it for some time. Yes he did die, and I was only sixteen when he did but I had it figured out for lots of things and when I figured out why he was trying to teach me so fast, I got on it like stink. So when I say before building something... there is a process of learning and just throwing. You have the internet and in some times forced by you, take time to research questions and how to diagnose things, not I guess the tail light must be out so it won't start and if I bag it I can haul more people and make more off it if I sell it or any excuse your going to really make yourself embarrassed after you understand how silly you sound. I know kids are like this today but are you going to be a goofy kid or learn how legitimately to make the most of yourself. One reason I say this and you won't argue this, it takes twice as long to unlearn the wrong way as it does to learn the right way and hold your head up and say honey we did it. Kinda like smoking.. dumb hu but see people try to quit and its that way for years cause reflex will get you in trouble if you don't give it your best... it will be more fun if you don't have to undo and redo things in front of the world. I was a head mechanic for years before I started my own shop but when I did, my reputation preceded me.... in spades... I started wrenching for myself in the month of july 85 my mid years and made clear after taxes over sixty thousand dollars and had work waiting for me... all over alaska. No I did not go to school and it was wrong for my dad to keep me out but I did go after I grew up and I got my high school diploma when I was in the service. I am proud of it to as not knowing how to read was really embarrassing. So I am really proud to be a subscriber of yours and I hope to inspire you at least some. How are you going to make a good decision if you don't know if it is bad advice??? Yep, just google it as I seen that you have a computer and go for it!!

First gear is pull toward you and down. Second is away from you and up. Third is still away from you and straight down. KZfaq double-clutching. Up-shifting is just pushing the clutch twice (once while taking it out of gear into neutral, and again putting it into the next gear). Down-shifting is push in the clutch to take it out of gear, touch the gas pedal to build the engine speed, then push the clutch and put it in the next lower gear. It sounds more complicated than it really is. As for swapping: Changing that head gasket would be a piece of cake and a great learning experience. That’s the perfect truck to get Logan out there wrenching. Bust the bolts loose, hand him the wratchet, stick him in the engine compartment and let him run bolts out. Film that!

You should build a really strong 327 and put a muncie 4 speed in it. I think that would fit that truck perfect! And then find some older good body parts with a little rust color to it and clear coat the whole truck. Put bags on it, wide tires and dog dish hubcaps. I think that would look cool as hell! It would definitely be a sleeper!

Always test your thermostat in boiling water before installing it. To adjust your carb mixture screw(s) connect a vacuum gauge to the the full manifold vacuum port on the carb and adjust the mixture screws to get the highest vacuum reading then adjust the idle to 800 rpm. Start with 1.5 turns out from fully lightly seated for the mixture screws. I would replace the head gasket if it’s shot. Keep that inline 6 banger.

If the head gasket is blown it isn't to much work to replace it on a straight six. Check the mixture screw on the new carb. Tighten it down and back it out 1 1/2 turns as a starting point. Once it's running, throw a vacuum gauge on it and adjust for the highest vacuum. I think keep it as it is, just get everything working so it's safe and reliable.

If it was a head gasket you should be seeing smoke specifically white smoke coming out of the tailpipe when you're driving it or running it if it doesn't smoke anything in the coolant not going anywhere and it's staying at the level that it should be and there's no milkiness in the oil either then it isn't the head gasket. Could be a bad temp switch maken u think that it's over heating I've had that before and definitely needs a carb adjustment in order for it to run right and not keep stalling like that trying to drive it up the hill for sure .🛠

For a head gasket problem check to see if its leaking water out the exaust or bubbling in the radiator or pull the head see if a cyl is clean & the others look the same. I would keep the truck as it is the 235 is a strong engine.

Try flushing the system and doing a pressure test before swapping the head gasket. If you’re having trouble finding gears you can use mechanics wire to shim between the concentric rings on the steering column and it will make that 3 on the tree easier to shift. You may need to adjust and or replace the clutch too that’s an easy fix.

On the thermostat please tell me that you cleaned all the surfaces and wire brushed the bolts. I always use Never Seize on any parts that are prone to rust. You will love yourself for doing that.

Nice video, the truck seems to be coming along Stalling could be carb needs more fuel mix. Give it a 1/4 turn to add more fuel see if that helps No air bags! You'll be SOL when the compressor fails. Leave the 6 in that truck !! Just cruise and enjoy Good luck

To adjust the carb I was told to scrow the air mix & fuel all way in then back them out a bit running then unscrew them a hair then try it. Head gasket cyl head remove not bad on a 6 cyl

You can replace the head gasket no problem man! I have faith in you. And it should be less work than changing the driveline to anything else. Cool truck. Put the side steps on and some old cragars.

Keep everything close to original as possible, nice wide rally wheels and tires, the most you could do is give it a fresh coat of paint and it would look like a million dollar truck

A starting point on carb is turn screws all the way in , then back out one and a half back out.

Good to see what you have done to the Chevy. I would do a compression test and a leak down test. If you don’t have those tools im shure AutoZone rents them. If those checks turn out ok connect a tachometer to your engine and a vacuum gauge also. Also a timing light. Warm up your engine until it is fully warmed up thermostat open. Set timing to specification. Adjust air fuel mixture screw till you get the highest vacuum reading and then adjust your rpm at idle to specification of your vehicle. That engine is one of the easiest engine to do any mechanical work to. So much room with that inline 6 cyl engine. I think your doing a good job for the experience and knowledge you have. Keep those videos coming and remember happy wife happy life. 😎👍

First gear is all the way toward you and up. You keep trying to start in second gear . Also if you are trying to down shift you need to probably double clutch it. That is to push clutch all the way down once and then push it down again to shift it. when adjusting the carb turn adjusting screw in until it starts to die and then back it out a quarter turn. Also try to adjust the timing and points it will probably run a lot better. And change that old crappy gas filter. Good luck and have fun with it.

And don't bring her down with any airbag installation. I'm with your wife on that one!! You're so lucky she's in back of you in this labor of love project. Most wives, my late wife would not have, if it were me. Make that truck her sole competition!!
