@@BrosOfDecay I think it's a printer press. The old IBM computer with the 5x8 slots were for floppy disks to backup. But a lot of forms were hand typed with carbon paper and the pressed carbon copy was used to run copies.

Yes. Exactly, Emma. I have seen pictures of laundry rooms in Victorian days, the sheets and larger items were washed in large tubs and they were wrung out in these heavy duty machines used by servants.

Maybe your right, but I have one my self. Electric. It's to be used on linen and sheets. Table cloths. And some clothes. They couldn't iron linen and sheets. That was to big. To much work. So they used this pressing machine

They must of been old. I do know that back when I first had my first IBM I had big floppy disks. Never measured them. I guess they were that big! :)

CraftyCritter919 The 8 inch floppy's began in early 1970's and were gone by early 80's for the most part. The enclosure these are in is bigger than I ever remember seeing. maybe just different manufacturer. Europe had a lot of different manufacturer than the US

The machine you refer to is what is called a mangle, when you did your washing with the washboard you would then put them through the mangle before you hung the washing on the line.

I think it's for making prints, as in art prints. I could be wrong,but I have seen mangles, my grand mother, had one out in the shed, and they aren't so decorated

It is most definitely a clothes mangle. Put the wet clothes in between the rollers and turn the handle. The clothes pass through and the rollers wring the water out

Dear Brothers, You are too nice to crawl around all that mold, filth and dust ! Please consider your health. You might get hurt on the broken floors/stairs, or breath in bad air! Also that machine upstairs (old rollers with iron frame) looks to be an old mimeograph (to make copies) I used one something like it in 1950s OR a wringer to get water out of the laundry, so not as wet. Pray for God's protection.

I can't really breathe in those masks which they sell in DIY stores. I think unless you don't visit such places every day, it should be fine. Mold is everywhere outside in lower concentrations.

paula null I'm not even into any of that etc... but I know enough that when those stain glass windows came into view I said wow I would pop those hinges and take them out of there.. I'm sure people would love some hand crafted pieces like that.. you basically could never get craftsmanship like that ever again in this day and age!

usually the people doing the demolition will strip the house of anything useful or valuable before they tear it down, as part of their payment for the job. one of the cable tv channels (discovery, history, travel) has a running series that does exactly that.

Yes, please listen to Rho RhoTiss. When I was about your age, I inhaled a spore from where I worked. It was on what used to be a bird sanctuary, and it did a great deal of damage to my lungs (histoplasmosis). You cannot undo such damage. With the degree of decay and mold present in these locations that you're walking through, you are in great danger of harming yourself. Please take precautions.

yes, diseases are actually carried by wild birds and distributed through their droppings. be very careful about touching and breathing. look into how flu viruses are spread.

Katherine Myers, yes. Check with your local experts on what pathogens may be present. In the south, many are exposed to histoplasmosis, it's quite common. The sanctuary that was housed where I worked was full of egrets. The spore grew from where their droppings were deposited, and have a potential to cause a great deal of problems. My lungs are full calcified lesions that make them look like a road map when scanned. The disease also caused complications from healing after surgery and even caused problems with my eyesight that had to be handled with antibiotics. You're a good mama for being concerned for your boys. Just follow through with this. Knowledge is power. Best of luck to you and yours!

yes charlie it can be used for pressing prints BUT gives pretty crude results .. really for pressing cloth NOT NOT for wringing out water from cloths .. thats a "wringer"

Sometimes these buildings are inherited by relatives who have no interest in the property, but then one would think it would be sold unless in a depressed area. Often they are abandoned as they are tied up in litigation when an estate or will is contested or if banks and creditors are fighting over a property (common with larger homes when a rich person's financial status changes and they try to hold on to their lifestyle by borrowing from many sources. I looked into some abandoned properties years ago, investors bought them when they became rezoned as commercial and let them fall apart for years before demolishing them and developing the land or building an industrial park. One owner offered to sell me the house if I moved it, but the cost of moving it would have cost as much as the house was worth, and what bank would finance that? I recently bought a house abandoned for 7 years. It had some broken windows and raccoons had done a lot of damage and left a lot of dangerous waste in the ceilings. The wiring had been cut maliciously (not for the copper), the pipes were burst and the lower floors were sagging from rotted joists due to the wet basement. It was to the point where some said it should be demolished but some investors wanted to buy it cheap, gut it and fix it and sell it. I wanted the newer heated barn/shop and lot. My offer was accepted so I will fix it as I can afford, retaining the original woodwork, floors, etc. Nothing like the properties in these videos, but still a fun piece of history to try to save. The seller was still making payments on the property, no one is sure why she abandoned it and let it decay.
