This is the only visible evidence of the historic FEC branch line in South Miami Florida that connected to the Oversea Railway. In this video, I will take you on a tour of the abandoned railroad that is left and walk along where it used to go thru and what it was replaced with, the Metro Rail ... Also, I will show you where the railroad crossing was located. In case you never heard of the Oversea Railway or Overseas railroad, it was the Florida East Coast Railway line that went South of Miami into the Florida Keys all the way to Key West and crossing the Seven Mile Bridge along with 41 others just to get to Key West which at the time wasn't accessible by car, only a passenger train led by a steam locomotive was your only way in! This is urban exploration and archaeology at its finest!

Piece of history in the backyard I didn't even knew existed. I used to live in Homestead in the early 1980s and used to see the train go by. It all was paved for a bus route.

This track connected to the line that ran parallel to US1. It's all but a memory now : / Thanks as always for your views and comments!

There's a railway where I live that was built in 1918 and is still being used today by a lumber company.

Always amazing finding rail that has been dormant for 30+ years but then gets wiped out across the creek by construction. I sense someone was removing ties for landscaping use and left the rotted ones. I haven't been by those abandoned GM&O tracks in Illinois in 7 years. Might make it there in fall to check status and figure where it is on Google. Thanks for sharing your knowledge

My pleasure, Paul. It is great to share these videos with like minded people who can appreciate railroad and history! I agree with you about the ties being taken for landscaping. I bet there are millions of old RR treasures in IL! I'd love to go back one day and document. Thanks as always for the views and comments!

Just south of this location was the short lived Kendall Railroad Station on the intersection between 77th Ave and the FEC railroad, which I found a picture of in a Baptist Hospital/ Kendall community history book.

If you were to go north from the rails you saw at the start of this video, would you run into the end of the active part of that rail line-and would you do a video of the line going the other direction, in the future?

The active part of the line starts at Perimeter Rd next to Miami Int'l airport.Security is tight there, so a video there would be difficult. Thanks as always for the views and comments!

I recall that line looking very clean and well maintained. That is how it looked, the crossing gates were so white with the red refelctive tape and lights. Especially in the Kendell area by Dade Land Mall. now a little further south down by The Falls it looked a little more railroady and ruff. Thanks for the tour.

Hey R this is amazing I have away wondered if they would have built a line to Cuba? Thanks again love it😁
@richardgerlach5156
@richardgerlach5156 6 жыл бұрын
+Erik Max Q Mcc- Henry Flagler (FEC founder) never intended to build to Cuba. The water is way too deep! The water between the individual Keys and the FL mainland is very shallow. Usually less than 20 feet deep.

More good stuff! Do you know when they pulled the rails for the FEC main? Wonder what you would find with a metal detector, I'm really shocked that the rails on the other side of the creek weren't pulled at the same time. It looks like that here was a wye to the north of the creek, to have a time machine to see that part of the world 75 or 100 years ago. And again, Run, Roly Run! Keep up the good work!

Y'all's property search system is so easy to use! The county that I live in uses a GIS system, it's like pulling teeth to find out who owns a piece of land. And wonder why the FEC still owns those couple of tracts to the north of Snapper Creek, but Dadeland Apts LLC owns the tracts to the south where the right of way was. In NC, the state will buy rail corridors when they're abandoned, they will show up as being owned by the DOT. Thanks for the link, I'm always looking resources like that to investigate railroad property, abandoned or otherwise.

i know that the main miami station where you would board was in downtown miami across from the county courthouse and from there the train pretty much took the path of US1 all the way down to key west but do you know if/why they would use the track in your video (the north and south track along 70th ave) to send trains to key west?
