The most interesting short stretch of "abandoned" track I have seen was on the D&RGW. Traveling eastbound across Colorado, you travel through the Moffat Tunnel and then descend through countless switchbacks down into Denver. On one outside curve on the side of the mountain, there was a short stretch of track, no longer attached to the main line, on the inside of the curve. It had a few open hopper cars filled with huge boulders. The cars were all painted beige and heavily welded to the track. Turns out they were being used as a wind block to help prevent cars from being blown off the rails and down he mountainside by the fierce winds that can travel down the face of the Rockies. Only time I've ever seen this. It would make an interesting modeling scene. Take care.

Hi DJ! Great video as always! I’ve seen videos of abandoned trackage that’s gotten so overgrown that trees are actually growing where the ties once were.

I'm currently planning my 3rd layout after decades of hibernating due to work, kids, etc. You gave me inspiration and encouragement with your "you can do this!" messaging and attitude. I love this content. I was wondering if you might do a quick video of how to build a small fenced "MOW" yard with rails, ties, signaling equipment, ballast, spikes, switch stands, and the like. I think it would be interesting detail. Just a suggestion. Great work as always.

You did an excellent job. There's some abandoned rail near my house and I noticed there's a couple branches and small trees that have fallen over in some spots. Might be a good addition to the scenery too.

Who would have even thought of doing abandoned track? It's a great idea, and so realistic, esp. with that static grass. i think some of it looks good with the diluted white glue. It looks like stagnant puddles. Dried up, it would look like the roof of that building you have near the spur, with salty outlines of where the puddles were. Well done, DJ!

I use static grass but I don't have a static grass applicator but I found it looks just as realistic by its self. because you got to understand that grass isn't just standing straight its up its down it's left and it's right it's all over the place and using 4mm grass it looks good.

A unique detail I saw in Meadville Pa., by the old Erie shops, is a grade crossing on abandoned track with a yellow sign that said "exempt". I'm guessing the crossing was left in place for tax purposes.

I plan on doing something like this, but it will still be operational. One car per six months, the track will be unpower and noted "NO Engines" It will make ops more interesting because you will need spacer cars to be able to switch.

@djstrains
@djstrains Жыл бұрын
True, maybe paint the rail, but clean off the top of the rail where the engine would be, or leave unpainted like phase 1.

Hi DJ, That looks fantastic, thanks for sharing the video. What static grass applicator do you use and where did you purchase it? I've been thinking about adding static grass to the Long Valley and this video convinced me. Also what size static grass did you use on the abandoned spur? I agree DJ, I do not like KZfaq Shorts. Cheers, Rich S.
